Niko’s roster construction

Not sure Asuma is good enough shooter (yet) to start at 2.
You don't want Asuma to be your main threat from the perimeter, but he is a good enough shooter to play in a lineup where Durkin and Crocker-Johnson are at 3/4.

In looking at roster to date, it looks like a defensive/rebounding guard would fit in nicely.

Any chance Tyler Cochran is still a possibility?

That too. However I am now beginning to imagine a full lineup of guys that are 6'7" or 6'8" and can all shoot, dribble, and pass.
I think Houston and SDSU have shown everyone what’s possible without a 7 footer. Just need guys that are beefy and dogs that go after every ball. 6’4” to 6’8” and can all shoot, dribble and rebound can work.

get your point for sure
but Robert , Francis, & Tugler.....none of them can shoot or dribble
so yes you can play the way Houstan plays.....but if you are going to have those 6-8 beefy dogs at the 4 & 5 who can neither shoot or dribble, you better have 3 guys that can shoot it from deep at a high level....like their 3 guards all shooting above 40% from deep

its too bad those beefy dogs that play the 4 & 5 and the guys that shoot it above 40% from 3 are taken away to the highest bidder in todays game

It’s probably harder to find and get those 6’4” point guards.

It's reasonable to expect Asuma's jump shot will improve. It's already pretty decent, and I like his quick release. That dude is a pro prospect.

Big off season for him going from his freshman to his sophomore year. Got a good sense for what he needs to work on this past season, now will be on him to up his game and take the next step.

I was thinking we would see more than 1 CSU player so far
It has to be awkward for both the coaches and the players when one assistant stays. Normal people would experience some twinge of guilt poaching guys from a former assistant. I'm not sure who is in the portal from CSU other than Evans, which is the one I would really like to see come here. The longer he doesn't commit, the less likely he comes here, I suspect.

So far, it does seem like we are doing better in the portal than the previous administration, but there is plenty to play out yet. I'm satisfied so far, but if we don't add a big who can start, and another Big Ten quality starter, I'll be concerned. Plenty of time, though.

Okay yes all good points. Seems like we got 1 of 2 guys we wanted. The rest staying, any others we could want they are probably shopping around for top $$

Hope for the best; mentally prepare for the worst. Evans is a hot commodity, so he'll have plenty of suitors. Nobody gets everything they want for Christmas--even a guy's former coach--but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need. I assume his visit is still planned for later this week. I still like our chances, as I haven't heard a whole lot else about him considering and visiting other places.

The thing about a guy like Niko is that, if he's found and developed a guy like Evans once, he'll find and develop another guy like Evans again.

I am a little surprised neither of the MN guys on their roster decided to come with him but it is entirely possible that he didn't offer them the opportunity to as well.

Always tough to know with these things. They definitely want Evans....but going to have to fight off some good programs to get him. Hopefully he ends up here eventually.

As a freshman, Evans played 8 minutes per game and shot 32% from 3PT and 68% FT...in the MWC.

Now this same guy is being courted by places like UNC and possibly Kansas? Yeah I would like to have him but also really nice to know we have the guy who developed him into a key part of his NCAA tourney team.

And guys like Tonjes, Roddy, Clifford

Or they don’t want to part with their Rocky Mountain high, their education choices, or even their girl friend. Sometimes there is more than just basketball.

The money factor I think reduces the importance of the other factors. That vaults to the top of the list.

Our program has to become such a positive experience that it begins to become a tie breaker when it comes to money. If you have a player that can get 500k more elsewhere, you are going to lose the player- period.

Yep, might as well start with reserves then pull them within the first 4 mins. Won't change anything right? Wondering why more don't do this 🤔
If it were only that easy. Managing a basketball game is incredibly challenging with so many moving parts. All I know is the winning teams play their warriors down the stretch whether they started or not.

Plenty of time perhaps but there are not plenty of bigs who can be considered "decent or better" listed as uncommitted in the portal right now. I look at the portal every day, often multiple times per day, and I'd estimate that there aren't more than 8 uncommitted centers who are worth taking. There might be a somewhat larger figure for uncommitted power forwards but even they aren't plentiful. There is still time for more big men to enter the portal and that could help.

I always think that big men should be recruited first because those positions are the most difficult to fill. There aren't as many of them and a certain percentage of them are just not worth recruiting.

There are also a fair number of players listed as uncommitted in the portal who are like Mike Mitchell: in the portal despite likely exhausted eligibility.

agreed. I like the thought of playing a lineup that has 3 forwards that can all switch on defense and shoot the ball. But that doesnt mean you dont need somebody who can bang down low when the other team has a physically dominate player

CSU had that player in Memba. Right now, we dont have that player and there is not alot of options in the portal.
