I heard Dan Patrick ask him that question last week. He didn't exactly put it down. Just the standard "so focused on Michigan right now" answer.

Izo is done very soon. Nice career, but he has lost it, time to retire as a legend.

Izzo has a top 10 recruiting class coming in next year and the best player in the country coming in the year after that while being in a good place to get Tre Holloman. He’s not leaving soon imo. They also righted the ship pretty good this season

I don't think so either but he needs to learn Serenity Now or take up Yoga or something before he ends up with a Bob Knight style exit.

Your certainty is a bit disconcerting because the certainty you have/had about the internal WI BB team problems coming to light have not yet seen the light of day

Because they had to pay nearly $7 million to buy out the current coach. In addition, we're in the middle of a pandemic, Utah athletic department is running at a revenue shortfall of $35 million, and the PAC 12 is hemorrhaging money with a very murky outlook on their own TV network.

Because he earned several pay raises over the course of his ten years at Utah. He started at $950k/year in 2011 and subsequently had 4 raises via extensions, including a massive boost after leading Utah to the Sweet 16 in 2015 (3 years removed from a 6-win season), and another raise after he won a game in the NCAA the next year. So, he didn't start at $3.6 million per year, he just ended there.

No way Craig Smith or any other coach starts at Utah north of $3 million this time around.

It will not be that public because of all the seniors but will be known soon. They lost 7 of 10 and the problem affected the chemistry.

Does he have much appeal period? He’s been a D1 head coach for 8 seasons. In those 8 seasons he has zero NCAA berths and 2 wins over Power 6 teams. Are there any other Power 6 programs that would have him on their short list? I’m not convinced he’s on ours.
 





Things have gotten a bit out of hand about this whole "private info" argument, so let me address a few things:

-- I'm not a member of GI, so I don't see what's posted there.

-- As I said originally, I have been in touch with a number of people I know as this search has evolved. Some with connections to certain candidates and some who are avid Gopher fans. I've been firing off texts and sharing info as I got it.

-- I wasn't clear that yesterday's update was gathered from GI, but I was in the midst of enjoying myself watching games and having drinks with some friends and didn't think twice before quickly sharing that info. Obviously, that was a mistake and lesson learned.

-- My goal, in all of this, was to try to give some insight with so much rampant speculation going on.

Party's over though. Enjoy the search and I hope/trust the Gophers end up with a great candidate!

...and that, my friends, is why I don't want any NBA-associated candidates hired by the Gophers. If I was a gambling man, I'd be fairly confident in betting that any of them would view the job as a stepping stone back to the big time. That's not what's needed.

Your posts are appreciated regardless. We've just had a few of the more moody posters show up the last couple days.
 

Watching Syracuse #20 Braswell who is 6’7” makes me crazy as to me he looks like a 2” shorter (more productive) version of Isaiah Ihnen. Whoever Coyle hires no doubt will be trying to save Ihnen from xfer, and will figure out how to get more out of him. He has such long frame/arms and too little developed/untapped potential.

Sure ppl might’ve called you out, but you didn’t run from it. You took ownership and reflected in what you called a mistake. For me personally there’s bigger problems in the world and ones life to get all up in arms over things being shared on a message board. I appreciate your willingness to share info. Continue to be you!
 

Nothing that brings a fan base apart like a coaching search I guess haha.

More and more I think Smith will be the hire and it would be a very good hire. His teams play defense, rebound the hell outta the ball, and have great chemistry. His resume is rock solid. He's won the conference everywhere he's been and 3 straight NCAA berths doesn't hurt.

I'm agreeing more with those who've said recruiting will adjust as he moves up to a higher level as well. He's already made 2 big program jumps and done well to adjust to win big and revive programs. Big 10 is a whole new level but the guy can no doubt coach and bring in his guys. He doesn't need to be a top 5 Big 10 recruiter, just needs to get the guys that can physically compete at this level and play his way. I think he'll do that.

If it's down to Smith, Medved and Gates, I don't think it's close when you look at resumes. Does that mean Smith will end up being the best of the 3? No, but I think it's fair to say he's the best hire based on past performance.

I'd be looking forward to Gopher basketball going forward with him at the helm. I hope he is the guy of those 3 no question.

If the hire isn’t one of the more frequent names mentioned I would be more surprised if the hire was someone like Wes Miller than Dan Fife.
