News on Fred Hoiberg

Really, excellent news WOW! Not tweeting must mean he is a dead mortal lock to be the new coach

This is probably for leverage. And if so, what a sweet deal for Hoiberg. The media tosses your name around. The university you coach at panics, and you get a raise.

This screams smokescreen to me. I can't believe Teague/Ellis think that Hoiberg would leave ISU. The only thing that gives me some hesitation is that using a guy like Hoiberg (and possibly Stevens) as a smokescreen makes no sense unless you have a candidate of equal/greater cache on the line.

It's not us sending out the smokescreen, it's Hoiberg's agent.

Cyclone fanatic board is blowing up. Apparently Ames, IA is the mecca of college basketball and the city and facilities are 10x better than here. We're doomed.

I've kept an eye on Twitter the past few days, and every fan base blows up when their coach is mentioned in connection to us. Xavier fans were livid, saying Minnesota was a crap job in comparison to Xavier. Feels bad, man.

They do have a Casey's General Store

It's the best part of the coaching search.

I wish every other job wasn't so much better than what the Gophers have.

We should have built that practice facility a long time ago. If only Teague had known we could still be losing to Northwestern with Tubby next year. Instead we have the unknown.

Doogie on the radio in Des Moines right now, saying that he doesn't think it's "close" between ISU and Minnesota and saying ISU is a much better job. Doogie also talks about about how we haven't won an NCAA tournament games in 23 years before this year.

I am sure Doogie is a decent enough guy, but I am certainly no fan of his sports takes, he seems to be trying hard to make a name for himself.

1460 KXNO is available online streaming, not sure if they have on the demand or not.

Agree with everything you said..

Dude, Minnesota sports people around here are complete peer-pleasers. Their peers around here will not allow anything other than relentless negativity, because even bare objectivity indicates "homerism." Thus, there isn't a guy in sports media in this town who doesn't love to tear down Minnesota sports teams, and especially, their fans. Reusse's favorite sports moment was when the Gopher hockey team lost in the NCAA tournament to Holy Cross.

Update: Now Doogie says Minnesota is the "8th or 9th best job in the Big Ten, maybe worse"...I wonder if he realizes he has a Gopher fan listening to his "takes". I haven't heard him say one positive thing about Minnesota.

He thinks we will have closure on Hoiberg by tomorrow (then backtracks and mentions it could go to Monday if he wants the weekend to think about it). No surprise, sticks to his take (one of the few I agree with) that Hoiberg will stay in Ames.

Ends with if Flip Saunders is your 5th or 6th choice, you are in pretty good shape.

Hosts of the show don't think Fred will leave for another college job, but think the right NBA job would be a tough decision for him.

This is true.

I think it's hilarious all these media folks begged and begged for Tubby to get fired. Now they all say, basically, he's the best we can get and this is a terrible school. Whatever it takes to be negative.

This is true.

In it's current condition, yes, but you have to consider, if they really do provide all those "perks" that Doogie is listing out, does it remain that way going into the future? I think that would place us right in that middle ground in the conference really. They know they aren't gonna attract anyone without all that stuff. The question for them is basically is their promise enough for a coach to make the leap? I don't know, I guess it only takes one though.

Maybe. The guy is a chinless worm though. His writing has regressed to be Reussian and merely about generating clicks. He has god awful takes that are done with little to know attempt to check his facts. None of his sources pan out. He takes cheap shots at players. He's trying to be the next Reusse. He'll get clicks but he hasn't figured out that this kind of journalism/trolling is REALLY replaceable and that he isn't doing his career a great service from moving away from real journalism.

He also has never broke any info, he doesn't have any connections. Big yawner.

Of course we wouldn't stay in the lower tier if we built a practice facility, increased recruiting budget etc.

But the AD promised Tubby a practice facility when he was thinking about coming here, so until it materializes or they have concrete sources of funding it's useless to talk about.

Maybe Teague has all the money he needs for all of that, including Tubby's buyout, but we don't know. Just got to evaluate things on their face.

@MedcalfByESPN

Another thing to consider with Hoiberg. Loves the fact that both sets of grandparents are in Ames. Told me that when I asked him about jobs.

This is true.

Totally subjective. Our last two hires came from Gonzaga and Kentucky. Illinois' came from Ohio. Iowa's came from Sienna. We don't know how this is going to turn out, but we're in better shape than when we got Tubby. If it was nearly as awful as some people make it out to be, we should just have stated the search with Saul Philips and Scott Nagy.

I've heard nothing about tracked private jets to and from Ames, so this can't even be possible anyway, so it's not even worth discussing.

In fairness, I wonder how hard the funding was worked on?...I don't think Tubby wanted anything to do with fundraising. To me, that would turn off big money donors in a hurry. Its being reported, the big money donors wanted to see who the new coach would be then they would pledge monies.

I honestly don't know the answer to any of that, but based on things I have heard on the radio and read in print, Tubby was not loved by many outside the confines of Williams Arena.

WTH is wrong wit Doogie? Why does he hate Minnesota so much and if he hates it so much, why the hell would he stay here? People like him need a swift kick in the a$$ and shown the door. God, I hate people like him. Why would you go on a Iowa St radio and tell the world that covers a team that their coach would be taking a step down to go to? Even if its true (which I don't, the B1G is a STEP up from the Big12 and that means something), what does he gain??
