Because, why not?

Sources say the job is his if he wants it: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/...ing_job_is_Fred_Hoibergs_if_he_wants_it032813

If University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague and senior associate athletic director Mike Ellis get their way, Dinkytown will soon have a "mayor."

According to two sources, the vacant Gophers men's basketball head coaching job is Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg's if he wants it.

Both sources said Teague has spoken with Hoiberg, and told him every amenity -- practice facility, more access to private jets, etc. -- is a guarantee.

However, one of the sources said it's 75/25 that Hoiberg won't leave Iowa State for another college job.

Hoiberg, 40, has Minnesota ties, having played for the Timberwolves from 2003 to '05 and subsequently worked in the team's front office.

He played from 1991 to '95 for Iowa State in Ames, where he's affectionately known as "The Mayor," and returned to coach his alma mater in 2010.

The Cyclones were 16-16 in Hoiberg's first season, then improved to 23-11 and 23-12 the past two years, advancing to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament each season.

All these threads ... I am going to cry. I don't have this kind of time!

So it's his job if he wants it, but it's 75% he doesn't want it? Carry on.

Well wouldn't that have applied to like others as well? I just don't understand why he would make this move....

Nice of us to offer. Who's next on the list?

I am thinking we just roll with Andre/Austin as co-player coaches next year and continue that strategy going forward. Andre/Tyus the next year, etc. I don't think we will ever find a coach. I know it has been 4 days only, but I am just mentally exhausted.

So some agent slipped something to Doogie. I guess Fred wants a raise at ISU. He's not coming and he doesn't excite me.

I heard Fred is really clever too. He told Royce White there were foxy girls and unattended laptops on the plane and he made every flight. anxiety disorder overcome!

That means Brad Stevens is off the list as well, if he was number 2...This search is becoming tougher and tougher and may end with Flip....

Anything below Stevens isn't going to excite anyone. Give Flip a 2-3 year shot. You can hire a bland candidate that excites no one if he doesn't work out.

I just don't like where this is headed. Not because Hoiberg isn't a worthy target, but because this starts to sound like a more desperate process all the time and less and less like the process we had assumed - one where they had someone or ones lined up that would make this a quick and smooth transition. If this report is true, they've even strayed from the Villa 7 consortium. I'm starting to get that bad feeling in my stomach.

Hoiberg had 6 seniors on his team last year. Might be a good time to leave.

We'd get the cream of the transfer crop every year! But seriously, I'd be down for Hoiberg, he seems like a good recruiter and he's done a nice job at ISU so far. I doubt he leaves though.

Can't see this one happening. Nice try Norwood but I'm not going to buy this one yet

Come on Fred, channel your inner Cael Sanderson!

I like Hoiberg and I would trust him as a coach, but this smells of Doogie being played by an agent.

There are so many whispers around Hoiberg in the NBA, I doubt Teague and Ellis would want to gamble of Hoiberg jumping ship to the NBA. I honestly think he'll be coaching my Wolves next season.

If Hoiberg wanted to stay in college, he'd be a great hire.

Hoiberg is making 1.6 in Iowa State. If we offered 2.3 ish and had guarantees of the practice facilities and jets, it'd be hard to turn down. Fred Hoiberg still owns a home in the Twin Cities. (at least according to a few posters over at Canis Hoopus).

I'd definitely say it's much more likely he coaches the Wolves next year than the Gophers if Adelman resigns like he might because of his wife's issues.

Yep, I think it's 50/50 Adelman or Hoiberg.

I wouldn't be in the least surprised if the Wolves front office/coaching staff isn't some Gopher fans wet dream. Flip as GM and Hoiberg as coach.

Marcus would prefer if Teague didn't take a swing and miss at the big names. I think we all knew that Stevens, Smart and Williams weren't real likely. If he thought that one of them was going to be the next coach, he probably was shocked when Dungy turned us down.

Hoiberg is a bigger name than anyone I thought we would get.

Hoiberg hasn't tweeted since March 24. This is an excellent sign for the Gophers!!!!!

Does he have a practice facility down there? Anyone know??
