Many people jumping to conclusions these days and gaslighting.
Pretty tough to read the thumbnail bios and even muster some hope sports has even a sliver of importance or priority to any of them.

While these four that Walz just appointed seem to be a bit of a disaster, none of the 12 give much in the way of warm fuzzies as it relates to athletics. Maybe Coyle doesn’t speak to the public much because he’s busy full-time trying to scrape and scrap for whatever he can get. I have to admit that I was more than surprised with the lack of depth and breadth of the majority of this motley crew and admittedly, I guess a guy oughta pay more attention to things like this.

Please elaborate. Disaster, motley crew?

Googled Ellen Luger and saw she "liked" a LinkedIn post about the Axe. All 3 of the new non-student regents are U of M grads so hopefully they understand how important football is.
Ellen’s grandfather Louis Gross played football for the Gophers in the 1920s. She mentioned it at the beginning of her statement before the legislative committee considering regent selection. It’s a family of football fans.

Wow someone actually did some research before forming an opinion. You are rare man these days.

So Google says the U of M budget yearly is $4.2 billion. You look through the bios of these folks they really have no business over seeing an operation of that size much less than an athletic department budget of our size. Who’s to say the reason we don’t have very many eight and nine figure donations coming in the door like other institutions as close as St. Thomas is because who would trust these folks and their limited backgrounds with that kinda money? The next time I get ragged off at Coyle for something I’m gonna give him a pass his day to day probably is very much a struggle. We can’t have one Lou Nanne type or 2 out of the 12? The student choice by Walz got zero votes when the bipartisan legislature committee looked at the list earlier this year; unless I read that wrong. I was thrilled to see the prior poster talk about one of the regent elects having a long family history with Gophers athletics that certainly helps. I’ve always completely disregarded folks when they’ve said that a lot of our athletic struggles are institutional. I thought it was just us having a historic run of bad AD and coaching choices, but perhaps there is more to the story?

Listen to the gopher gridiron episode with a regent. All very clear of the morass

Yep. They have accomplished CEOs and we have a clown car full of hack politicians.
The Board of Trustees is a separate board and not the same as the Board of Regents. They serve different functions. See give.umn.edu/about/board

The Board of Trustees is loaded with Business People.

That said the concern is whether the Regents will help or hinder athletics at a time of great change. Worst case may get actively involved, best case they support, and if not support stay out of the way.

. Simply listen to the gopher gridiron interview with Dean Johnson. Everything about the what u has to deal with. Awful.

I’d rather this dimwit appoint regents to the u of m then be in federal government..

When it comes to St. Thomas and donor money - we shouldn't underestimate the insular quid pro quo culture they have built. If you are a graduate, you have access to a network of other graduates and corporations that look to support. It's a culture unto itself that really isn't likely at the same scale within public education. Carlson captures a bit of it, but it's not the same.

my favorite part is the having no idea what the board of regents was designed to do or what it was put into place for. their oversight of athletics is minimal, at best. you can look at the meeting minutes and see how little coyle is there (I see twice all year, once for hiring Niko and once for the annual money stuff; you can also read the minutes and see the presentations from Coyle. He gave his annual here in July so you can watch his dynamism on display if you want to punish yourself). They're more a rubber stamp than anything. The President is going to have much more authority than the board (and regarding athletics, the President is directed to have oversight of Athletics and to carry it out per the prior bylaws from the Board, which are minimal). Jury still seems to be out on Cunningham given its year 1 (going into 2)

i would rather we leverage more of our high powered industry here, but all of these boards are just bs full of lawyers and politicians . it's the same over at michigan and osu.

we just have the added position of our group oversees the entire state/U system and so they try accommodate that and it's going to inherently lower your "power" when you're pulling people from.

If the U had 38 trustees, you could get away with a lot more of the self-appointing CEOs and stuff from industry a little more.

Yep, I can't envision them serving a real purpose.

It seems to be there is an easy litmus test for this: Do you subscribe to Peacock solely for the 1-2 Gopher games per year? If no, you're out.

I feel like a lot, I'll say a majority, of posters out here are pretty clueless on the function of the BoR.
