New QB Commit

People saying he's an upgrade over Leidner in any facet because of a video are out of their damn minds (my comment was 100%facetious.)

I'm quite positive I could put together a string of plays for Mitch's highlight reel from this season, call him Gunny McShavney, say he's a 2 star recruit and you'd all be creaming in your pants to get him in the Maroon and Gold next year.

Agreed. I mean if you could just up and get a JUCO better than Mitch you'd think they'd just have done that.... I also don't think that is so much a sure deal.

Just go back and pull highlights from Leidner's HS days and you'd get the same thing.

I re-read this entire thread just to see who said this guy is an upgrade over Leidner, because I didn't remember anyone doing so. Lo and behold, nobody did.

There are a few phrases such as "dynamic runner," "looks like he has a good arm," etc. But he's not compared to Leidner at all -- positively or negatively. Mostly, people seem to have their fingers crossed.

I propose "Gunny McShavney" be the official running joke name we apply to any hypothetical QB, for joking purposes, for comparing to the current starter, or any other things QB/QB recruiting related, that would make us laugh.

This is so spot on. HAHA. Well done!

I agree. Gunny McShavney it is.

I understand the facetiousness and while it's possible to put together a highlight reel of Mitch that stat line of 3 tds vs 12 interceptions vs FBS ought to tell anyone everything you need to know about the kind of season he's had.

Likewise, a 7/8 ratio with Neil is not encouraging. We desperately need a passer in this offense, preferably one that has the ability to manufacture plays, go through progressions, make the right reads, and protect the ball.

He's been compared to our current backups, and they've all been, at one time or another, been said to be better than Mitch. The transitive property of football my man.

Nobody on here should pulling for any of our QBS we should want the best player out there!
From the sounds of it from a player on this years team there was a big gap between Mitch and next guy and he didn't think Mitch was very good.

I don't give a rats ass who it is I don't want the coaches to peg someone so early and commit to just him. I want it to play out maybe over half the season then go with the guy for the year.

I don't care if they can run I want someone who can throw a spiral to a open receiver. I know it's a a lot to ask.

They just bumped McLauren up to an .824/3 star on 24/7

Remember that Leidner was recruited as an athlete and not specifically as a Qb. This guy was recruited specifically for his Qb skills. Let's hope the coaches know what they are doing.

Man, I'm surprised to see he only runs a 4.7 40. He looks really dynamic in that highlight tape and was pulling away from DB's...so they must be even slower.

Ugly stat line throwing the ball, but man, he looked WAY more dynamic and athletic than Ta'amu to my eyes. Live arm. I'm excited about the competition, but color me nervous about the QB position.

Green and Croft have live arms.

They were sold on Smith/Brooks last year but still brought in McCrary. We currently have 2 QBs on scholarship (3 if you count Williams). Even if they believe Green or Croft are the answer for next year, we still need depth. The plan for this class always should have been to recruit a JUCO and a high school QB. I'm not sold that McLaurin is a B1G starting QB, but glad they addressed the need.

Nice post, my thoughts as well. Tried to say that on another thread, that they need depth at QB but not to read into to the JUCO thing too much, got hammered.

I laughed out loud. A perfect take on #7 and GH. Brilliant!!!

Me too! Gunny McShavney....lived in Ireland until he was 16, built up his arm strength pouring Guinness pints at his family's pub and arm wrestling.

I can tell how good someone is just by how many stars and dots they have. I don't need a video.

Word has it that after he killed Balor, Lug the Longarm had to leave Ireland in the dead of night. When he arrived in America he was not exposed to extreme vetting and entered the country under his current name Gunney McShaney. Tremendous upside...hfecwill be wonderful.

Todd McShay agrees with the "Tremendous Upside" comment.

He has pretty good hair, 8/10, definitely better than Ta'amu so I think we made the right call here.

He will definitely give them a running threat from the QB spot (if he can beat out Green, Croft and Williams).

If he can beat out Croft and Williams, it looks like Green may have problems seeing the field next year.
