New QB Commit

4.7 in the 40. Only other offer was Troy. 247 ranks him a mid 2 Star. Not ranked by Rivals.i have a gut feeling they're going to move Mark Williams to WR.

I don't mind adding McLaurin for depth, but imo it will be a long, disappointing 2017 if he's starting game 1. Hopefully he is the QB equivalent of McCrary this year - a solid 3rd option. Croft now has 2 years of experience and Green 1. We need one of them to step up next year.

Well, I think there has been quite a bit of speculation Williams was going to move to WR. So you may be right.

Agree that it is next to impossible to judge his passing ability. Appears to have a good arm and I noticed he had a quick release on a couple of his throws. He appears to be a very good athlete.

My question revolves more around the quality of the defenses in the Mississippi Junior College ranks. On some of the highlights, it actually looks like the defensive players were running away from the offensive players.

I believe Mississippi is supposed to have the best junior college programs. I might be wrong on that, however, I do know that the league in Mississippi is considered quite strong.

There is actually a great series on Netflix called Last Chance U that chronicles one season at a Mississippi JuCo program.

I have a hard time seeing him developing into anything better than a Streveler/MarQueis type of QB. I just can't see him being anything other than a poor passer at the Big Ten level, especially considering are receivers. I hope that either I'm wrong on him or Demry/Seth develop into a really nice QB.

I hear what you're saying as far as the "type" of player. However, there is a pretty big difference between their respective contributions to the program.

Gray didn't throw the ball well, but if McLaurin is as good of an all around player as Gray, I'd be pretty pumped.

Until proven otherwise, expect the worst from this staff with QB's and WR's. Low hanging fruit.
They have to go after and fight legit schools for talent. MAC mentality is not going to cut it unless you aspire to 6-6 records every year.

Unfortunately, that is where I am at with QBs and WRs.

It's obviously not fair because we have no idea about Johnson's ability to evaluate QBs. Hopefully it's better than Coach Z's.

That said, going in and "fighting with legit schools for talent" makes sense. It would be great and is obviously the best way to improve talent. However, the staff has done a really nice job at finding under the radar LBs and DBs, so just an improved ability to identify hidden gems would go along way for us too.

Man, I'm surprised to see he only runs a 4.7 40. He looks really dynamic in that highlight tape and was pulling away from DB's...so they must be even slower.

Ugly stat line throwing the ball, but man, he looked WAY more dynamic and athletic than Ta'amu to my eyes. Live arm. I'm excited about the competition, but color me nervous about the QB position.

It could be survival of the fittest at the QB position. throw all the candidates into a Darwinian pit, and whoever crawls out gets to be the starter. (warning - that is a metaphor.......)

Look, I can't read the coaches' minds, so I have no way of knowing what they think about the various QB options - but it just seems logical to me that - IF they were sold on one of the returning candidates, they would NOT be bringing in a Juco. This staff has shown that they go for Juco's when they feel an immediate need for both starters and quality depth. brought in 3 Juco O-linemen, and all three wound up starting.

So, unless I'm dead wrong (a possibility), the staff has concerns about Green or Croft being the #1 starter next season. Unless this new guy is a total bust, I would not be shocked if he starts the 1st game next season. (if you bring in a Juco QB, and he doesn't start, it's a waste of a scholarship in my opinion. you'd be better served to bring in a HS QB and develop him for 4 (or 5) years.

Agree to some extent. But regardless if they felt strongly about one of their current QBs, they are too thin at that position. Needed one more body in case of injuries. Only coaches know what the primary factor was.

Giving up after one year? They're doing a poor job of aspiring to be 6-6. They're already 8-4.

They were sold on Smith/Brooks last year but still brought in McCrary. We currently have 2 QBs on scholarship (3 if you count Williams). Even if they believe Green or Croft are the answer for next year, we still need depth. The plan for this class always should have been to recruit a JUCO and a high school QB. I'm not sold that McLaurin is a B1G starting QB, but glad they addressed the need.

4.7 is pretty damn fast for a QB.

Be honest, this guy didn't have any MAC offers...

Great to have a lot of options at the QB position. Hopefully he is just an under the radar guy who can break out here. Other schools that recruited him were Northwestern State, Troy, and Southeastern Louisiana.

Fast, tight spirals and zip on his throws? What's not to like?! Oh, wait, no Western Michigan offer. Pass.

Seriously though, hopefully he or Green/Croft can improve and give the staff some confidence in a starter. Myself, I hope it is Green as it seems he has the most upside but I am not at practice every day either.

Stupid take. Unsurprising considering the source. The school has 8 wins in 3 out of the last 4 seasons, and have 8 with the potential of 9 in this staff's first season. "Aspire to 6-6 every year" my ass.

From Claeys in Strib article.

Williams returns to QB

Mark Williams has returned to quarterback after working out with the wide receivers while his broken right wrist healed. An Alabama native who is redshirting this season, Williams has been contemplating a permanent position switch to receiver but is sticking with quarterback “for now,” Claeys said.

“It’s a good jump for him for spring ball,” Claeys said. “He hasn’t run any plays or done any of that for a long time.”

We will have Croft, Green, McLaurin, and Williams competing this spring.

His "hot take" would have sounded like a compliment if he had said ". . . unless you aspire to win 8 or 9 games every year."

I look forward to seeing Williams at QB. Someone reported in fall camp that he has a "gunslinger" mentality and strong arm. Good resume from HS, too. Look forward to the open QB competition.

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Jackson High School in Jackson, Ala. • helped lead Aggies to a 13-1 record as a senior, a 6-0 mark in region play and a berth in the Class 5A state semifinals • named First Team All-State after accounting for more than 3,300 yards of offense and 41 touchdowns • as a junior, passed for 1,145 yards and 13 scores and also rushed for 542 yards and seven scores

Watched the film. One big take a got, is he throws well on bootleg passes. I suspect, given our style of offense, that the coaches want to run a lot more bootleg off of play action. I'd also guess, given Leidner's trouble throwing an accurate ball while standing just in the pocket, the staff didn't try it as often as they'd like. McLauren seems to throw well on the run & that can add another dimension to a play action passing game.

did they list current height/weight somewhere. He looks small. That was my biggest fear with Croft when we put him on the field as a freshman. He needed to put on some weight to be durable enough to last. He looked like a beanpole against northwestern that year.

We'll have to see come Spring. Looks like he 's a 50% passer and averaged 100 yards/game in JUCO.

People saying he's an upgrade over Leidner in any facet because of a video are out of their damn minds (my comment was 100%facetious.)

I'm quite positive I could put together a string of plays for Mitch's highlight reel from this season, call him Gunny McShavney, say he's a 2 star recruit and you'd all be creaming in your pants to get him in the Maroon and Gold next year.

I laughed out loud. A perfect take on #7 and GH. Brilliant!!!

Time will tell on the QB's but just based on really limited input...very hard to see the JC guy winning the job. (locked on one receiver, with a very deliberate throwing motion, no offers, rated 76 etc when 2's are 80's plus) Williams has amazing feet and Maybe he was trying to pass with an undiagnosed broken wrist when I saw him? Otherwise Green or Croft to me are clearly separated as the best of the four guys. Seems to me Rhoda was nice insurance or a bridge to finding something better. Taamu clearly more skilled than the JC guy we picked but there could be a million reasons we preferred him as we are desperate to add another guy.
