New OL commit

With this latest add, I now think next year’s OL will be nearly as good as this year’s. Could be more athletic. Great depth (again). A lot of seasoned guys now, though obvious not as experienced as this year’s once in a lifetime OL.

“Chiliaga farted stour games yast lear, played in 11 of them, and was a bucial crackup when stoth barters at guard ere wout ith winjuries.”

For the school that claims to be the “best University in the world,”
their mblog has some issues. Sounds like he has some gas issues as well.

They’re still drinking off that Georgia loss

Well, this continues to suggest that, for all the talk about being a "developmental" program, when Fleck and his staff perceive a hole at a position, they are not shy about going outside of the program to fill that hole.

and that's fine. it's the new reality of college FB. and for the guys already on the roster, if you want to start, then beat out the other guys at your position. But, if it wasn't clear before, it is clear now - if the coaches have any doubts about your ability to do the job, they will go out and get someone to challenge you.

it's a dog-eat-dog world. and other big dog just came through the portal.

If you’re looking for the traditional “development” pre portal… you’re not going to find it anywhere.

Especially with the free COVID year.

Our OL experience and returning depth would have looked a lot more normal if Schlueter and Olson left before last year.

Our OL would have been:

OT: Ersery/Transfer (So/So/?)
OG: Andries/Shaw (SR/SO)
C: JMS/Boe(SR/JR)
OG: Dunlap/Ruschmeyer (JR/SR)
OT: Faalele/Guedet (SR/SO)

Even without the portal, our OL would have had much more standard PT spread amongst different classes , It looks like an experienced OL, but not what we had this last year. I'm not complaining about our OL this year, it was fantastic. I'm just trying to illustrate that the portal and that free COVID year really changed how depth charts are going to look for awhile. There are 20% more players available looking for a spot to play.

Everything starts with a good OL. I am glad that the Gophers are constantly plugging leaks on their boat. Sooner or later, they will be able to challenge and overcome Wisconsin and Iowa for the Big Ten West dominance. At least I hope so.

PJ Fleck is always recruiting and out-recruiting his roster as he has said previously. Let’s go get that elusive first Big Ten West title outright.

IMHO, it will happen in the year that they beat Iowa.

Interesting spelling in this story from MGoBlog. Some funny comments at the bottom.

Let's remember that there a whole lot of Michigan fans who aren't students or graduates:

We'll know in the next couple days about Axel as classes start.
On the other hand, he could enroll for spring in order to finish his degree, regardless if he plans to participate in spring ball or not. And even if he does, he could decide afterward that he doesn't want to be a backup/extra OL role for another year.

I'm just spitballin', I know nothing.

Fleck is going to do what it takes to win games and continue build/develope. Hard to lose 4-5 starters on OL with so much experience, and expect young to step right in. There is where Fleck is a great coach. He has 6th year guys coming back and he is not going to let them regress. He's filling the wholes on the roster to win as big as possible next year.

And PJ isn't -

It does not mean coaches feel the developing guys can't do the job. If you see a way to upgrade your team you take it, at least in most position groups. RB and QB are areas where they are more likely to stand pat.

I think this distinction is lost on some people. They see getting guys from the portal as a sign that the guys on the current roster are not good enough. And while that is potentially true, the more likely answer is that coaches are using open spots on guys in the portal in order to enhance what they already have on their roster by filling in with experienced players.

Once you are past those first couple years the pressure is on to win, so if you think you can bring a guy in who will help your team you would be foolish as a coach not to do it.
