That was my first thought …Wonder if this is a confirmation that Axel is hanging it up?

This is the most disappointed I've ever been as a Gopher fan. There is nothing positive about this commitment
They’re still drinking off that Georgia loss“Chiliaga farted stour games yast lear, played in 11 of them, and was a bucial crackup when stoth barters at guard ere wout ith winjuries.”
For the school that claims to be the “best University in the world,”
their mblog has some issues. Sounds like he has some gas issues as well.

Dear Santa - Please bring us a LB and WR with similar qualities as Big Chuck
If you’re looking for the traditional “development” pre portal… you’re not going to find it anywhere.Well, this continues to suggest that, for all the talk about being a "developmental" program, when Fleck and his staff perceive a hole at a position, they are not shy about going outside of the program to fill that hole.
and that's fine. it's the new reality of college FB. and for the guys already on the roster, if you want to start, then beat out the other guys at your position. But, if it wasn't clear before, it is clear now - if the coaches have any doubts about your ability to do the job, they will go out and get someone to challenge you.
it's a dog-eat-dog world. and other big dog just came through the portal.
Especially with the free COVID year.If you’re looking for the traditional “development” pre portal… you’re not going to find it anywhere.
Hopefully he'll be busy in the NFL... but it wouldn't surprise me to see something like that when his playing days are over.Hire Ko as grad assistant nasty coach?
Everything starts with a good OL. I am glad that the Gophers are constantly plugging leaks on their boat. Sooner or later, they will be able to challenge and overcome Wisconsin and Iowa for the Big Ten West dominance. At least I hope so.Well, this continues to suggest that, for all the talk about being a "developmental" program, when Fleck and his staff perceive a hole at a position, they are not shy about going outside of the program to fill that hole.

Interesting spelling in this story from MGoBlog. Some funny comments at the bottom.
Exit Chuck Filiaga | mgoblog
Via reports, Michigan won’t get to have the best backup guard in the country for two years in a row. Michigan offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga has entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal today — angelique (@chengelis) January 7, 2022 Filiaga started four games last year, played in 11 of...www.mgoblog.com
Let's remember that there a whole lot of Michigan fans who aren't students or graduates:“Chiliaga farted stour games yast lear, played in 11 of them, and was a bucial crackup when stoth barters at guard ere wout ith winjuries.”

On the other hand, he could enroll for spring in order to finish his degree, regardless if he plans to participate in spring ball or not. And even if he does, he could decide afterward that he doesn't want to be a backup/extra OL role for another year. We'll know in the next couple days about Axel as classes start.
Fleck is going to do what it takes to win games and continue build/develope. Hard to lose 4-5 starters on OL with so much experience, and expect young to step right in. There is where Fleck is a great coach. He has 6th year guys coming back and he is not going to let them regress. He's filling the wholes on the roster to win as big as possible next year.Well, this continues to suggest that, for all the talk about being a "developmental" program, when Fleck and his staff perceive a hole at a position, they are not shy about going outside of the program to fill that hole.

Did you watch Georgia and Alabama's o-lines?Very nice addition. Started some games this year for the best offensive line in the nation!

I think his moniker says it all...What? He started very game for Michigan last year and 4 this year and has played in 30.
This is a huge addition.

It does not mean coaches feel the developing guys can't do the job. If you see a way to upgrade your team you take it, at least in most position groups. RB and QB are areas where they are more likely to stand pat.Well, this continues to suggest that, for all the talk about being a "developmental" program, when Fleck and his staff perceive a hole at a position, they are not shy about going outside of the program to fill that hole.

Yup...Just read the thread on MGOBLOG fan forum and lots of positive comments about him.My Michigan friends are devastated to lose him. Thought he was awesome. Former All-american at Army IIRC
I think this distinction is lost on some people. They see getting guys from the portal as a sign that the guys on the current roster are not good enough. And while that is potentially true, the more likely answer is that coaches are using open spots on guys in the portal in order to enhance what they already have on their roster by filling in with experienced players. It does not mean coaches feel the developing guys can't do the job.
