New Josh Martin Highlights

Martin has talent but that doesn't mean he'll be ready to play and contribute a ton. Personally I'm just hoping he's able to learn team D and be a solid defender for us and an aggressive rebounder from the 4 spot which we didn't have this year. Anything offensively beyond tip ins or open layups/dunks from penetration would be a huge bonus

I agree what really killed us at Power forward was on the defensive end, with the guard play we had and will have next year, I thought Joey and Oto did enough on offense it was on defense where we were exposed. If Martin can sow up the 4 spot on the defensive end we will be much improved

Yea the problem was that both Oto and Joey lacked any real trait to hang their hats on defensively. Neither was particularly strong, neither was particularly long, neither was particularly quick, and neither was particularly athletic. That meant they couldn't recover well, couldn't hold ground well and had to rely on positioning and savvy on D. For instance against WI neither was long or athletic enough to bother Hayes so he got his shot off whenever. Neither had the size or quicks to deal with Dekker either. Now those guys are good players but we didn't have a single defender that was even a decent matchup with anybody's 4.

Hayes really exposed our bigs and the kid is only a frosh.... I hope Josh can be that guy we are missing to match up with that type of player.

I have never seen Martin play but I would have to believe King has a better shot. On the scout site they list the mid range game and shooting as an area for improvement. Martin certainly brings some tools to the game that no one else can offer. I think we will love his attitude and the toughness he will bring. Should really do a nice job playing above the rim and on the boards. But I also like how King can stretch the defense with his shot. Same for Buggs when he develops. I think which player gets many of the minutes at the 4 will depend on who we are playing that night.

If Josh can play defense for 3 minutes without fouling he'll be the best player on the team.
