New Josh Martin Highlights

Before we get all excited, let's not forget that even the great Patric Young only averaged 3.4 ppg and 3.8 rpg his freshman year. I would consider that a solid freshman year as long as he continued to improve.

Actually I was thinking right around 5.5 ppg and 3.5 rpg for his frosh year (maybe better, who knows), that would def be a solid first year in the big 10 for Mr. Martin.

Watching ESPN today I forgot who predicted it but someone said Vonleh goes before Embiid in the draft because of Embiids injury. Not sure I agree with that but I do like him as a pro glad he left before Indiana figured out how to use him properly.

Wrong thread.

But Young had Vernon Macklin, Chandler Parsons, Erik Murphy, and Alex Tyus in front of him. Martin has.........Joey King?

Martin's HS teammate Zach Lavine is entering the draft after only one year at UCLA.

Lavine is going to pull a Shaun Livingston and not be able to do one rep on the bench. He's talented, but so far from NBA ready.

Martin's intensity and aggressiveness is truly needed. I have a feeling he's going to pick up a lot of fouls and not be liked by other teams.

I could see Martin being a bit like Krabbenhoft. Really physical player that gets under the skin of the other team on a regular basis.

Finally watched the video... My goodness he is explosive, stroke looks smooth too.

Hard to imagine ESPN had dropped him from a 4 star to a 2 star and then the kid goes out against good competition on puts up 28 points and 14 boards a game. I know they recently moved him up to a 3 star but he sounds like he is going to come in and really help this team in a position of high need. Very exciting to see him develop.

Dawson is definitely a banger. McGrary when healthy as well. Jordan Morgan too.

I agree with you, and that's basically why I only use Rivals. I watched his film and could tell right away he was a B1G player.

Looks to me like Josh already has a BIG ten ready body.

Looks like he could crush both of our power forwards from this year like pop cans. I don't know how he will transition into the B1G, but he won't get pushed around.

Hulk has strength, athleticism, and aggressiveness in his game. 3 of which Joey King does not have (Joey is a great shooter though), and 2 of which Buggs doesn't have. If Hulk's game shows any signs of being refined, he could very well be the starting 4 next year!

He's a similar frame to Gavin Schilling this year no? Schilling might be slightly bigger. Schilling banged on the boards very well in his minutes at MSU, wasn't asked to do much offensively due to the talent in front of him. But he was solid when on the court.

Pretty amazing that a few people on here have pointed out that he'll need a year with the strength coach to catch up in strength to the BT. What a beast.

Martin is or will be big enough to play next year. He'll simply need experience and further improvement in his overall game. I expect him to back up King for at least the first 15-20 games if not the entire season, but he will see 10-20 minutes a game. If he takes over the starting job during the Big Ten season or plays more than 20 minutes per game, then he'll have exceeded my expectations in year one.

He will physically control Joey King in practice everyday, and he is easily twice the athlete. Just by following Martin on Twitter, you can tell he is dedicated and willing to put in the work. Catching that lob in the video with his left hand and throwing it down with that much control and authority is pretty amazing. That baseline dunk....his eyes lit up and there was nothing getting in his way. Joey King may start at the beginning of the season, but come Big Ten, Martin will be starting.....all of this in the circumstance we don't bring in another power forward that is better than both of them.

I can't wait to see Josh Martin play for us next season. He would easily be the most athletic person on the team with the exception of maybe Little Dre.

MoJo front court, would be hard to stop.

I'm as excited as the next guy for Martin.. but if being cut physically was all that was needed to succeed in the B1G, Aliou Kane would have been all conference. I think King is crafty enough that he will not let go of his starting spot too easily, especially with his ability to shoot.. However, I see Martin logging consistent minutes all year, hopefully increasing as the season progresses.

Often it is learning how to play D1 level defense that is a big learning curve for these young players. Plus my bet is Joey King puts the time in the gym to bulk up a little. Very excited to add depth at this important position. I hope Martin is pushing to start sometime next year. That would be awesome

I'm kind of hoping for a Mitch McGary type freshman season from Martin. He probably won't reach the level of McGary, but I could see him being just an athletic big at the beginning of the season that begins to put things together at the end of the year and becomes more of a force come tourney time.

Martin has talent but that doesn't mean he'll be ready to play and contribute a ton. Personally I'm just hoping he's able to learn team D and be a solid defender for us and an aggressive rebounder from the 4 spot which we didn't have this year. Anything offensively beyond tip ins or open layups/dunks from penetration would be a huge bonus

Will just be nice to have a big man that puts it down with authority! Because King, Mo and EE certainly aren't dunking over any defenders.

It really is fascinating to see how a big man throwing it down with authority changes the complexion of the intensity of the game on both ends. It was so evident during the UK/UW game. I couldn't believe the way the UK big men threw it down.

Go Gophers!!

You do realize that Minnesota has had maybe one player ever that fits that profile, I wouldn't hold my breath expecting that kind of recruit.

I made a post about this after the NIT win that this is the biggest reason I have hope for the future. We won 24 games this year with virtually no-one playing above the rim. Austin did during non conference but not so much once competition stepped up. Dunking changes the game sooo much, its as close to a 100% accurate shot there is, and if you think of how many layups we miss or have blocked... thats a couple points a game.

What you mentioned is a completely non-quantifiable aspect of dunking, but one that should not be overlooked. How often did Rodney and or Trevor spark runs at the Barn or silence runs at the Kohl center or at other venues?

I don't know enough about Carlos Morris or Piper to know if they are high flyers, but we do know that Martin will instantly become one of if not the best dunker on the team because he might be the only one that can!

Mbakwe, Williams?

I think we as gopher fans should be hoping Hulk starts next year. Why? Not because we don't like Joey King; because he's been a nice piece for the Gophers. Instead, it's because we know the King is a pretty good player, and if Josh is starting over him, that means we are getting a player who is outperforming him in practice and we would be getting a better power forward than we already have. Ultimately, we improve if we are bringing guys in who can be better than the guys we already have on our roster.
