New Coaches

Why? Ben probably could have kept Conroy and chose another route. He wasn’t successful as a head coach, and has done nothing notable as an asst here. All that’s important is that Ben get a team he can work with, and sees working well together. The whole previous head coaching experience for one of the assistants is so overrated. If they were a great head coach who should be a mentor, they would probably still be coaching unless they have stepped away from that at this stage of their career - very, very few of those.
I would agree if the head coach had any HC experience. But since he doesn't, having a it on the staff seems important.

If you want to argue that Thorson's experience is better than Conroy's I can buy that argument. But I'd rather have had both Thorson and Mo/Conroy/other veteran coach.

Thorson and McNailly!!! FTW!!!

Other guy don't care for.

Now get Gabe back and Liam Back and we can hope for a competitive season

I like this group of coaches. I think they can build a good program and work well together.

Thorson seems like the development guy, he knows how to teach how to play. Kemp is know as a defensive specialist, a little more laid-back. McNeilly is good evaluator of talent, good recruiter and has connections. All good basketball minds and hard workers that can gel as a team.

What I care about is whether they can teach, coach, recruit, or any combination of the three. That is all that should matter.

Really curious as to why you don’t like Kemp as a hire?

He doesn't like anything about the team
I don't know....he did seem pretty happy about the other two coaches :)

Just seems odd to have a strong opinion either way about an assistant coach you had probably never even heard of until their name was mentioned in connection with the U.

Anyone getting a feeling that something has gone wrong with JMcN coming here?

Why is it taking so long?

There has to be things going behind the scenes, that us mere mortals don't get to see. (Captain obvious)

Wild, wild, from you know where speculation: Baylor is trying to steal away JMcN for themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Thorson and McNally, so it's very good so far. From the presser, we would have at least one assistant come from blue blood programs, etc. So Nuness would have been an awesome get. Assuming you feel Baylor is now a blue blood.

Kemp doesn't do anything for me for a couple reason.

1) His entire coaching career has been in low/mid majors.
2) i believe 11 years, he had one promotion, from GA to assistant.
3) I read the bio of another assistant at W&M and it's like they copied and pasted some of the "credited for" achievements. So I really don't know if Kemp was solely responsible for some of the achievements mentioned in his bio.

But whatever, BJ said Coyle gave him money to spend on a "great staff". I'm not gonna look for it, but i think Coyle was very very excited about the staff BJ was planning on putting together during the interview.

Now, if you are serious about not playing .500 ball in the B1G, then you're talking about tier 1 assistants, I would imagine mostly from Power 6 conferences. My personal opinion, maybe guys who have been mentioned as HC candidates or have been promoted to associate HC's at their respective places.

In a nutshell, some people are mentioning how we "stole" McNally from A&M. I don't feel we stole Kemp from W&M.

Here are the top assistants from the Colonial Conference according to coaches and published by stadium.

Chris Markwood, Northeastern
Mike Farrelly, Hofstra
Jonathan Holmes, Elon
J.D. Powell, College of Charleston
Kevin Clark, Towson*
Corey McCrae, Delaware

Kemp is because Miles recommended him to Thorson, who then passed that on to BJ.

LOLz, this is what it's come to? An anonymous coaches poll to determine whether the assistant coaches were worthy hires? You realize that Kemp had been at W&M for one season when this poll was conducted? That Thorson and McNeilly were not selected for their respective conferences?

Also everything else I mentioned. Let me ask you this, do you think Pitino moving to HC at New Mexico is a step up, lateral move or down?

Kemp moving from the MAC to CAA? same question.

If you're a stud assistant, coaches will want to poach you way before you join the CAA.

Or they have no idea about you. I don’t think only known assistants are the only great coaches. Some people suck at self promotion,

This is foolish. You’re applying principles for players to coaches. Small conference doesn’t mean lower coaching ability.

Perhaps he’s still a Canadian citizen. May slow things down.
I guess anything is on the table, a fair point to bring up. I don't know the process for Canadians working in the US, if they have to renew yearly or what. Maybe we just happened to catch him in the middle of his renewal for whatever it is has to have (work visa?).

Apparently people that live on the Northwest Angle can't even get home if they leave without a hassle now that the ice road on Lake of the Woods is out. Damn Canadians!
