As mentioned elsewhere, the Star Tribune is reporting that Nelson will start at Qb against WI. I figured this was worth a new thread since it is now going to be happening.

This is the dumbest move ever! Unless, of course Nelson leads us to a victory over Becky. Then, it's brilliant.
I never expected this. Really not sure what to think. The coaches must think he his ready. I have to believe this isn't a move they are making for a single game.

Wow. First start out of the blue at Camp Randal? Can't say I agree with it, but I guess if he can handle it, nothing will phase him after that. I don't think Shortell was anywhere near bad enough to prompt this sort of move.

Come on Philip! Bring home the axe boy. Be a hero after 1 game.

Wow! Now that's ONE way to change the discussion!

Maybe we should just wait for that 14 year old in "Nextyearsville" to come along in 2017 after a red shirt. We are 4-2 with 6 to go. We need to give ourselves a chance in his game. Kill has always said the best will start. Nelson has been on campus for 10 months. Kill tried to redshirt him, but it has to be pulled. Really what is the difference in 3 or 4 more years of Nelson? If his replacement isn't on campus in the next 1-2 years, shame on Kill.

I've heard that neither Gray nor Shortell can go at QB, so it's basically out of necessity. It sucks, but it sounds like they have no other choice.

@NSandell: In a follow-up to the Nelson news, I'm told by a source that there is a "chance" he plays Saturday. Said plan has fluctuated.

Why can't Shortell go? Just curious.

Huh. All this "building a program" talk about the future and more redshirts pulled. Good luck young Mr. Nelson. Looks like Ed Olson didn't make the trip and Tommy's not going to play.

Where the depth chart? The game is tomorrow? Wasn't it supposed to be released on Thursday.

No rules on releasing charts. Gray or Nelson listed as back-up last two weeks.

Since I, being a simple fan, have no control over lineup decisions, i choose to be excited for the kid and hope he walks in there and absolutely lights the place up. In fact, i can't think of a better time to turn the Nelson-to-McDonald combination loose upon the NCAA world. This weekend's game just got exponentially more exciting with this news. Go Gophers!

Great point.

In my mind, if we don't finish this season 2-4 or better, this is a short-sighted, hail Mary of a move that cost the program.

That said, I am excited to see how it pans out and hope Nelson is the savior some of us have hailed him to be!

I don't know that we have established so much growth in Kills short year and a half that we can't afford to take a few risks. What's the worst that can happen, we stay the same? In fact, one might argue that betting (and winning) on a few long-shots is exactly what's needed around here.

Hand injury is the rumor. Rumored (reported?) that he couldn't even throw until Wednesday.

Interesting, I know he got shaken up on that play that allowed gray to come in at QB, but then when he came back in after Gray went out I assumed all was well. Maybe it was the adrenaline that allowed him to come back in.

Keeping active probably delayed the swelling as well.

Screw it. I can't be mad if we get killed tomorrow with all the injury issues. That said, if Nelson pulls this off, :cool03::rockon::drink::drink::drink:

He would be a legend before even playing 1 home game. The kid could do no wrong for the rest of the year.

If true, his first college start will be against his team's biggest rival and his father's alma mater. Sounds like a great story especially if they get a W.

If this is true this might ultimately lead to Max Shortell transferring

If they go this route with Nelson and he has been taking all of the snaps this week then he better play, and play the rest of the year. If there going to burn his red-shirt then they have to let him play, and take the lumps and the mistakes as they come. There is no turning back, once you insert Nelson it is time to let him make it his team. With Gray's injury's that might even be the rest of the year. I don't like it but if this is what the coaches must do then this is what the coaches must do. Go Phillip Nelson and go Gophers.

The coaches must have known that this might happen when Nelson rose on the depth chart to #3.

Hopefully Leidner, Streveler, and the 2014 recruit have the talent to push Nelson into becoming better each year.

I fear this is throwing Nelson to the wolves, plus losing a year - can't see him having a good day under those conditions. The mystery is what is wrong with Shortell, injury-wise - all this secrecy about injuries is a crock. I'd feel a lot better with Shortell starting, to be honest. Now all we need is an injury to Nelson...
