Nelson named starter at Qb

Reusse was saying that Kill wanted to surprise Wisky by starting Nelson, but Sid caught wind and let the cat out of the bag.

That says something about the state of Gopher football writers when a 90-something is the first to break a story.

Or does it say something about the geriatric nature of the fan base and his relationship with Gopher Dave?

Well...as of halftime i believe we've allayed any concerns about throwing the redshirt QB out to the wolves at big, bad, nasty Camp Randall. Kid can play.

Yep.

In particular, I apologize to maximus. I shouldn't have been so touchy, and I'm sorry that I used the term that I did.

While I'm not sure that Nelson is that much better than Shortell, I do think he gives us a good chance to win the two games we need to be bowl eligible.

Kill knew Nelson is number 2. He wanted to redshirt him because he wanted Gray to play. Didn't want to play Nelson for just one game, expecting Gray to return healthy. Now Nelson is the guy the rest of the way. If that is not true, then I am baffled.

Shortell, knew he was the true #3 and that is where the September transfer rumors come from. And that is why his dad sold out Jerry on tv about his son's redshirt.

If Max is planning on making a transfer, he probably should be glad that Kill didn't RS him his FR season. Now he can use his RS in his transfer year, and he still has the experience of playing quite a bit as a FR and SO.

I wasn't afraid of him playing in Camp Randall. My issue is that I don't think he gives us a better chance to win than Max. If he does, IMO, it's marginal. So why burn a RS if you aren't improving your chances of winning? I realize that the debate comes down to whether or not you think that Nelson gives us a better chance of winning right now.

However, Nelson aside, I do think Kill is a bit too quick to pull a RS.

Agree wholeheartedly on redshirts. There's a lot of talk and posturing about building the program, but all the burning of all these redshirts is doing is leaving the cupboard incredibly bare for Coach Trestman when he takes over in 2016.

I'd put it this way, if you believe there is a 10% chance that he's going to have to come in for a quarter, perhaps as late as the 11th or 12th game of the year, you roll the dice and don't play him. If you think it's an 80% chance, you give him reps with the 1's in practice and start him the rest of the way to get him experience. That is what I believe their calculus was and I believe that it changed for them after last weeks game.

If you have decided this is the way to go as Kill and his staff have for whatever reason Nelson has to be the startier the reminder of the year.

I'm not sure, in all honesty, if anything was going to give us a better chance to win @ Wisconsin. However, having the experience under his belt right off the top, might give Nelson and the Gophers a realistic shot at success in the one or two winnable games still left on the schedule. From a broad perspective i think that what we're for playing for is ANY two more wins in the hopes for a bowl.

If the OC wasn't a trainwreck you could actually run a scheme that didn't require a pocket passer to run.

DOH.

Not that.

Maybe Shortell wouldn't get hurt if you didn't just ram him into the line 15 times?

Square peg, round hole.

Not like more proof that the OC is a moron was needed. He cannot adjust to personnel. PERIOD.

Burning a redshirt is really, really stupid. Of course, they already burned several redshirts last week while preaching "patience" and while screaming "we are young" 19 million times.

The coaches are looking dumber by the day.

Perfection. Putting QBs at risk is something out of the stone age.

Gray is a running Quarterback who has been bulked up like a tank. He is much more prepared to take hits and Tackles.(ankles excluded)
As drop back QB'S, Shortell and Nelson are not prepared to take the beatings that Gray as been conditioned for.
