NCAA Tournament 2022-23

If U r suggesting that Whalen didn’t recruit Beuckers U r 1000% incorrect ! I hope I am mis-interpreting your response. Paige was on the record multiple times on how often she spoke to Whalen and how she admired her career. She said she had a Fathead of Whalen in her BR growing up in MN. The original posters comments r spot on. She could have transformed MN woman’s team if she had any loyalty….I admire CC 4 her loyalty to her team and state.
Agreed Whalen tried hard for Bueckers. Clark had the mindset she wanted to win at Iowa. Bueckers didn’t l, even though I wish she would have. Plus they would play each other ever year. I think it’s too late for her to come to Minnesota and get the game that Clark does. She would still help the Gophers a crazy amount, but idk I just don’t see her having the Clark effect in 2 years.

Well, this has been a most -- I can't think of the word -- "fascinating" Sweet 16. What a series of games, incidents, characters, competitions, accomplishments and surprises. Chalk that up as a "win" for women's sports. Maybe "milestone" is a better word.

That original poster definitely would have meant Stollings -- the longer recruiting period before Whalen.

Bueckers has been surpassed. Clark and Reese are superior players. There are other juniors right with her as well.

She'd help the Gophers tremendously, though. If her body can stay healthy. That's a big question.

Clark still has lots of room to improve, which is scary. She improved her decision-making this year. If she continues to do that, and improves her shot selection, she's going to go to another level. That's how she becomes perennial MVP in the WNBA.

And there it is. Official.

To those on the other side it probably feels like your true love has just gotten married to someone else and you were invited to the wedding to see it.

Ring just went on, pun intended. And now they are out the door.

I think I'm in sensory overload with scenes like this.

And the officiating was ridiculous all the way around, not only on Iowa. I posted earlier the ridiculous Angel Reese call.

Concerning Iowa. What would expect with 5 black players and 3 black officials.
Race, that has nothing to do with it. Just lack of consistency in how the game was called. Women's officials, WNBA and college let a lot more go as far as physical bumping, and pushes. I didn't like that these officials became whistle happy and interjected themselves so much. Iowa gets their share of calls so I don't feel as bad for them as I would otherwise. The Technical foul, for number 4 on Clark you cannot call that on any star player. That Technical was over reach.

She did the "You can't see me!" That's not a ring taunt. Clark did that in the Elite Eight. It's classless, but Clark has to be able to take it if she's going to dish it.
CC did that to her own team, during a timeout. She did not do that to the other team. It is not the same classless move that Reese did today.
LSU deserved to win, but the 3 lady refs were really bad today. It tarnished a great game matchup today.

only small caveat, not saying it was a foul or not, but if it's a foul on player X it should be a foul on player Y. You shouldn't give preferential treatment to any player. Call the game as it should be called, equally across the board. I get people saying don't call fouls on stars, but then you have to call it the same for the role players as well. Feel like more people just want less officials interjecting themselves into games, which is certainly fair. Just dislike the idea that you can't call it because she's good.

Officials were clearly not ready to call just a critical game. No consistency in the calls. Especially in the contact with player with the ball. I thought Lobo really held her tongue in the commentary. It was clear she felt it was as poorly officiated as most of us did.

By the way I truly mean poorly officiated- not biased for or against any player or team. Just reeked of inconsistency based on the game being too big for that set of officials.

There is so much buzz about this women's basketball game and Final Four from so many unexpected angles, including controversy.

Driving in a bit ago, the guy on ESPN radio was talking men's basketball and then said something like, did you see the women's game today - what an great game of offense.

All good for the sport.

And lots of random stuff:

One of the great coaches few knew about until this week.

Yes, she wears a 🐐 outfit too! Who would have thunk?!?

Stolling didn't and by the time Whalen got here.. she had like 6 months.. compared to the other coaches who were recruiting her since the 8th grade..

The LSU bench was MVP. Morris had two the first half she sat and LSU was winning by 17 at half and won by 17. She had a great second half and hit some tough shots but that game was never in doubt.Second half scoring was even

Caitlin’s constant complaints cost them that technical in my opinion. They were looking to reign her in, in my opinion.
I speculated that it was a cumulative issue. Still think it’s pretty thin skinned refs to T her up in that situation.

Yeah basically the refs being so full of themselves that they wanted their imprint on the game. It literally stained the game… which was a lot of fun to watch and could have been better.

I’m not surprised at all to see online that people have turned it more into a race issue (it surely plays a part in people’s responses). On the other hand, I am surprised no one has mentioned the fact that this would have ended much differently if it had been a men’s game. It would have been a brawl. I was shocked at what was happening. Never seen someone chase someone around taunting relentlessly like that. Shocked no one defended their star or any intervention from a ref. I’ve done some pretty douchey things in my sports career and even I thought it was over the line. Interesting to say the least.

It's a huge - millions of views -- topic on Twitter. Search for "classless." Some sharply different interpretations Tweeted back and forth. It follows the related Twitter debate about Lisa Bluder comments and then Dawn Staley's comments.

I've been trying to digest the Twitter debate, finding myself making conclusions that maybe aren't fully reasoned yet.

I think one angle people are missing that is leading to misunderstanding is that the Twitter response originally did NOT start with calling Reese's behavior unsportsmanlike or even poor ethics. It started as "classless."

I think the various sides are misunderstanding some of the reactions.

One side is thinking that it's a sportsmanship issue, and Reese's unsportsmanlike behavior was worse than Clark.

The other side is irked that Reese gets called "classless" while Clark is called something like "tough" or at worst unsportsmanlike.

The "classless" term makes this more than a double-standard over rules of sportsmanship. I think some people are missing this and thus the reason for the disconnect between the two sides.

Both sides can disagree over sportsmanship behavior. But then this new angle comes in of a new term "classless" used that wouldn't be used for a white person.

Luckily in this forum we already have discussed Clark's classless behavior and see the bigger picture. I think Reese was worse but know Clark to be a repeat offender of "Classless Clark" behavior again and again. I think some viewers watching the game don't know the backstory.

Shittiest part of it is ncaa had real shot to keep the sport growing and capitalize on record viewership and instead guaranteed a good portion of the new audience won't bother watching another game

Not necessarily. The pro wrestling crowd will be ready to join the bandwagon.

I’m cynical and think there are a lot people connected with this that are saying any publicity is good publicity. The game is trending. People are talking. More NIL is on the way. Those of us who appreciate the game and see this soil it a bit are in the minority, I’m afraid.

Twitter gonna Twitter.
I just came to this forum to try and understand the latest racial debate on Twitter that apparently is related to this championship game. I think I’m following it now- the white girl Clark did something without much reaction and then the black girl Reece did the same and received much outrage. Got it. Thanks social media once again!
