National media reaction to a possible Tubby dismissal??

No matter the university, if a school makes any decision based on national media perception that tells me the decision-makers are weak leaders. I don't want leaders who have to check which way the wind is blowing before they make a tough decision.

Besides, who gives a rat's a*s what the media thinks? Decisions should be made based only on what's best for the institution, not what's best according to the guys and gals holding the pens and pencils and showing their mugs on TV.

Agreed. But you need the leader that isn't weak. Joel Maturi doesn't fit that bill.

Still looking for that 5-13 season not finding any..

You could be loing at 5-13 this year!

6 and 12 in year four and 5 and 13 is still easily within range this year.

Are you satisfied with 6-12 in year four followed by this season?

Considering I was pretty happy with him up until about one calendar year ago, I am willing to give the man a chance to regroup and get this thing rolling back positively, since he just did it three years ago before all of the crap.

But totally agree. If the administration really felt VERY strongly that Tubby is not right for the position at this time and at the end of the season wanted to dismiss him, I would hope they wouldn't sit there saying "Oh, but we'll get killed in the media for it, we'll just hold onto him anyway".

From a media standpoint, doing another extension and then firing the coach ala Mason and Brewster would make us look even dumber IMO.

I'm just pointing out that decisions should not be made worrying about media perception, whether that means keeping or moving on from Tubby. There would be plenty of upset folks whichever way it goes.

I certainly understand why we have folks upset with our current plight, but I'm not in the "let's get rid of Tubby" camp. Frustrated and disappointed, yes, but not to that point.

Agreed. I am also not in the 'let's get rid of Tubby' camp yet, but I am getting closer. There are just too many questions surrounding the program under Tubby.

A year from now if we are in the same state of affairs, or close, then I can see it. By that time we will have a new AD in place with time under their belt to have a handle on the situation.

You won't fire the coach because he will turn this young team around. Firing Tubby for Flip is only your boneheaded solution. BTW - Do you ever have anything positive to say on Gopherhole? All do on here is rip every comment everybody makes.

From my point of view, this program is treading water right now - and as my HS band director used to say, when you're treading water, you're not getting better, you're not going forward - you're not going anywhere.

I suppose everyone has the right to be optimistic, but I just don't see it. Multiple posters talk about all the Goph's young talent - but when I watch the games, the other teams have FR and SO players who take control of games and put up big numbers. Our FR and SO players show flashes of talent, but are certainly not on the same level as the young players on many other teams.

And, this idea that Tubby is going to "turn things around." What is that based on? I have not seen anything that makes me think Tubby is going to find some magic switch that makes all the young players get better.

My gut tells me that the U will wait until a new AD is in place, and dump this on his/her lap. My best guess - no extension this year, and if the Gophs do not make the NCAA tourney next year, Tubby will be "convinced" to retire, if the new AD has the testicles to do it.

I think Flip would be a good choice, but I am by no means saying he would be the only possible replacement. As far as positive comments go, I am optimistic that this program will get better once we get a coach understands todays game. I am positive about the future. I think the state is producing better and better players all the time. I think the practice facility needs to get done and it will get done with a new A.D. and a new coach that can raise funds.

How's that for positive thinking?

Nice post ornery.

I've been skeptical about Tubby, but what has Flip done to make you think he would be a good choice?

Was it squandering KG? Taking a REALLY good Pistons team and doing nothing it? Completely flopping in Washington in 3 seasons?

I think it's fair to start questioning Tubby. We aren't better than we were with Monson. I can completely understand arguments from both stand points. But I do not see what Flip Saunders has done to warrant so much interest.

While I agree with you, I think it's only fair to not compare Tubby with the top programs. We aren't a team that is going to get the top talent in the country, we can't really compare the FR at tOSU or Michigan with our freshman.

Tubby's problem has been losing players.
