National early signing day

HS recruiting is still the lifeblood of this program.
The overwhelming majority of this year's team were HS recruits. That's likely to always be the case.

This year's class is mildly disappointing on it's face, but it's always hard to project these kids.

Aireontae Ersery, for example, was a middling 3 star in the 2020 class. He developed into the 2024 B1G OL of the Year, and he'll play on Sundays.

That class also produced Joyner, Striggow, Daniel Jackson, and Cody Lindenberg.

MN will likely always be a development program.

Welcome aboard, class of 2025.

All true, but I do think class recruiting rankings are a factor in on field performance. We are at 51 last I looked...so we gotta make it up in the portal or out coach our opponents many who rank well ahead of us in recruiting.
Slotted 15th in the Big Ten Big Ten Rankings
We did seem to recruit a higher rated QB than we typically do. Maybe he is the wild card.
Team recruiting rankings were mostly worthless before the portal.....they are completely worthless now.

It would actually be really interesting to look at the 2021 or 2022 recruiting classes for teams and see how many of those guys are even on the roster for the team they committed to. I bet the amount of attrition would be off the charts with the way players move around.

Mindless comment

The 21 and 22 classes gave the Gophers

Eastern
Brockington
Walley
D Williams
Geers
A Smith
Beers
Hoskins
T Nelson
Bryson
Baranowski

HS recruiting will always form the majority of future Gopher teams. We are unlikely to break into the upper tier of the B1G until we recruit at a higher level.

There are a million factors but I find this interesting...our recruiting classes annually rank between 30 and 50. And our team at season's end for on field performance slots in somewhere between the 30th and 50th best team.
Yet, the teams that annually recruit at a TOP 25 level are the teams in the Top 25 level. The same teams get the best portal additions. Sure, there are exceptions, but the teams in the playoff picture are Top 25 recruiting teams....so it matters. To say it doesn't is silly.Screen Shot 2024-12-04 at 1.19.17 PM.pngScreen Shot 2024-12-04 at 1.19.47 PM.png

To be clear when I say they are worthless I am talking more about saying a team has the 35th best class or is 15th best in their conference. There are tiers to be sure.

Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Penn State.....are bringing in a different caliber of athlete than the bulk of the conference and in general they are going to be the top teams in the conference year in and year out because of it. Same thing is happening in the SEC and other top conferences where there are the helmet schools and top teams who year in and year out can attract the best players and are in the National Championship picture.

Our class is definitely not in that elite upper tier but where it falls in relation to the rest is impossible to truly say until years later.

As per Ryan Burns write up:

Prospects will no longer sign national letters of intent — which have existed for 60 years — but will now sign binding financial aid agreements with universities. However, signing the new piece of paper will have the same binding qualities to a university and likely will include contract details once revenue sharing begins next academic year. The financial aid agreement will also bind transfers to universities, prohibiting other schools from contacting and "flipping" transfers after they sign.

Abu technically goes to Heritage Christian, but plays football for Providence. Heritage co-ops with Providence for football.

Does this mean that for the B1G, a scholarship is only guaranteed for one year vs all four years?

Burns mentioned it was a trade off so that coaches can have time off without worrying about losing recruits.

National signing day, though important, seems to be losing value. Just read where half of Oregons starters began their career elsewhere. Outside of our top 5 guys or so in this class, how many will transfer? Portal is going to play a bigger part of building roster moving forward

sounds like the Gophers made a late addition to the HS class. Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press just tweeted:

#Gophers signed running back Trey Berry to its 2025 recruiting class. the Montgomery, Alabama product has a 3-star rating with offers from Boston College and others. (Berry steps into spot vacated by Shane Marshall when Marshall flipped to Georgia Tech on Wednesday).

------
more details on Berry: 5'11", 205 lbs.
3-star with a grade of 85 from 247. 48th best player in Alabama, 111th best RB overall.

34 offers, made 2 official visits. other offers listed include: Boston College, Northwestern, Syracuse, Illinois State, Georgia State, James Madison, Kent State, Liberty, Louisiana-Monroe, Maine, Marshall.

Hopefully it works. Seems like anything that restricts player movement at all these days has been stripped away. Would love to see some sort of actually enforceable contract of some kind but not holding my breath.

Restore the old portal/transfer rules - that will go a long way toward ending anarchy and restoring loyalty and discipline. ADs and coaches should be able to get that done.

What color is the sky in your world, lol.
Yeah, as much as it would be great to see some of the old rules put in place (especially sitting out a year if you aren't a grad transfer) those days are long gone.
