Myron blog: Devoe Joseph's mom: "I don't expect anything to change" "No turning back"

Sure, he hasn't performed all that well this year (although much of that is the ridiculous expectations that have been placed on him by fans at times).

His expectations have been over exaggerated in large part due to Myron gushing all over him the past few years.

This guy knows jack about hoops, he was a D2 bench-warming football player.

Hey. I wasn't a bench-warmer at Minnesota State Mankato. I always stood up and cheered for my teammates. Left the bench-warming to the other guys who didn't play.

You sound like a good teammate. Did you ever quit a team in the middle of a season?

Also, North Carolina and West Virginia are mediocre teams? Really? Because MSU has been a real world beater thus far. When the season shakes out I think we'll find that both of those wins will remain quality wins for us.

I think MSU is rated. Are NC and WV? NC got 1 vote and isn't ranked. WV did not receive a single vote for top 25. NC lost the night after we beat them. They are mediocre teams at best. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Neither UNC or WV will make the tournament....

So he has more assists than Nolen in 1 game and this means he's getting the shaft? Are you serious?
Joseph has averaged more assists per game this year than Nolen. In fewer minutes.

Facts are such inconvenient things.

You know what else is inconvienient? Putting your facts in context. He has indeed averaged .06 more assists per game. Couple of points. First, that isn't an overwhelming statistical difference. Even given the additional minutes Nolen has played it isn’t an impressive stat. Nolen averages .12 assists per minute played (I know this isn’t a real stat but you brought up the minutes thing). Devoe averages .14.

Second, I was responding to minngg’s post. In that post he referenced Devoe’s assists for a single game (WI) and looking back I’ll note that he even got the stat wrong (Nolen had 2 assists). I’ll be honest and admit that at the time I posted I wasn’t aware that Devoe was averaging .06 more assists per game. But that wasn’t minngg’s argument either and responding to his attempt to use 1 game to prove a point was what I was doing.

If you look across the whole season it becomes pretty clear that neither Devoe nor Nolen are doing that great in the assists department. Also of note, for all the flack Devoe has been getting about turnovers, his assist to turnover ration is better. So in the end they’ve been pretty comparable running the point if you look at the season’s stats to date.

The difference is in defense and scoring. Nolen is the better defender, no question. And Devoe is the better scorer, no question. Right or wrong, Tubby is emphasizing Nolen’s defense.

What do you know, another guy on a message board blasting someone who clearly knows more than he does, but for some reason he believes he knows nothing. Despite the fact that the guy he is bashing gets paid to know the sport.

This is just like the Minnesota Wild boards arguments "No other fans know hockey except Minnesotans."

Or "No one at KFAN knows anything about college sports." PA struggles and he admits that, but Justin Gaard's report that no big name candidates wanted the job appears pretty true huh?

come on man.

Hey. I wasn't a bench-warmer at Minnesota State Mankato. I always stood up and cheered for my teammates. Left the bench-warming to the other guys who didn't play.

Well played.

The two players you wet your pants over (Devoe and Royce) are gone... but you still have Ralph and Rodney to obsess about.

Well Myron get's paid to a few pennies to write about GophersBBall. I was a college basketball player, have coached college basketball, as well as scouted players. I've been plugged into the Gophers while Myron was still wearing a Packers hat and rocking Badgers sweat pants (probably still does at home). His biased opinions don't do much for me.

I followed this team while Myron was still wearing a Packers hat and rocking Badgers sweat pants. His biased opinions don't do much for me.

You assert that you are more qualified than Myron is and state your reasons. Maybe so, but if you stated your real name and who you played for, coached and scouted, that would give the rest of the board a chance to judge your qualifications - and for you to prove them.

Are you up for it?

It's too bad Devoe doesn't have Mickey Mantle's father for a dad. Any old farts out there recall the story of Mickey's slumping performance with the Yankees farm team in Kansas City during his first season and his father's "words of encouragement?"

No question I know more about BBall. If you are so concerned about my 'qualifications' send me a pm or we can meet before a game....

Very few know the pain of seeing the Giants moving to San Francisco with Willy Mays when they were clearly supposed to be coming here to play in the new Metropolitan Stadium.

This followed fairly closely by the Lakers moving to LA with Elgin Baylor.

Followed closely by the North Stars moving to Dallas and becoming the Stars.

Ah yes, that was great! Very different generation.

Wasn't it something like:

Mickey: I'm don't like baseball, I want to quit.
Mickey's Dad: I thought I raised a man, I see a raised a coward. You want to quit baseball? Ok, let's go home and work in the mines.

So you know basketball? Is that what you are saying? Ok I get that, congrats on the college career, I wish I could have played college hockey.

But how much do you know "GOPHER" basketball? How many times have you met with Tubby Smith this year? Who are your contacts in the upper-levels of the AD department? Why didn't Devoe's mom email you with her exclusive sob story that Devoe isn't coming back?

Medcalf rubs elbows with the top guys in Gopher basketball. You can say you don't need to know people in order to judge talent (as you says he overrates Gopher prospects) but I'm sure he sees them play LIVE and listens to people who know Gopher basketball and they inform him their opinions as well.

I'm not an old fart, but if I'm not mistaken, it was something to the effect of "I didn't raise a quitter. If you want to be a quitter, don't bother coming home."

Never mind, found the quote. He said:

"I thought I raised a man. I see I raised a coward instead. You can come back to Oklahoma and work the mines with me."

Nice work, SGL!

Nomination for Myron's biggest and only fan (wait I forgot about GopherLady).

You changed my mind, Myron knows all about Gopher basketball he has the greatest sources of all time. If he left or got fired from the Trib we would be lost, his knowledge could never be duplicated.

I said he had two assists. I was not wrong.

Tubby can emphasize defense all he wants, but to win in the Big Ten you need outside scoring threats. Perimeter defenses lay off Nolen and guard Hoff. Opposing pg's lay off Nolen and it makes it harder to get the ball inside. That is why Joseph has a better assist to turnover ratio than Al this year. College basketball is a pg sport. Nolen is one of the worst in the Big Ten. Of course he can play defense so we have that to hang our hats on.

Yeah, Showin, well done, that's the one. Mickey was slumping badly when the Yankes called him up, so they sent him down to their KC farm club to build him up. His slumping continued so he called his father to tell him he wanted to quit baseball. When his father showed up at his room, Mickey thought his father was going to console and stroke him and tell him not to worry that everything would be alright. But to Mickey's suprise his father started packing up his clothes and chewed his a$$ out the way you wrote it. After that episode with his father, Mickey was determined to work hard and not give up. His slumping ended, he was called back up to the Majors and well, the rest is history.

Ugh. Fail for me on that. I think when I glanced back my eyes saw the 1 from "1 game" and somehow I dyslexia'd that into you saying 1 assist. Bleh.

I think you're making a valid argument here and I don't necessarily disagree. I disagreed with you using the small sample size and discounting the UNC/WVU wins but the "Devoe's offensive threat helps us out" argument is a valid one. I'm a defense first guy so I have a preference for Nolan. But I don't think you're crazy here.

I guess for me when the team's biggest flaw is their inability to defend the perimeter I see the benefit in playing the better defensive player first. Offense is another glaring hole. But they've proven they can win when the defense is strong. And let's face it. Even if we had a true backup PG we could count on and Devoe could be a SG he would still be coming off the bench behind Hoff and Rodney because of his defensive liabilities. This is all IMHO of course.

I respect your opinion. We just have a different opinion an Al's effectiveness. Devoe has so much to offer when he gets playing time. I think Devoe sees his brother getting more time as a freshmen than he is as a junior and he feels like he wasting his chance to be a good player.

It is a crappy scenario. I kind of wonder if he might be happier coming off the bench if he wasn't doing it as a PG. I mean, he kinda has to since there isn't another option for us. But even if he still saw less playing time I think he might have been happier if he didn't have to be running the O.

Gotta love the what-ifs.

Glad we could see eye to eye. Now that I've gotten you to change your mind on that subject, maybe you could take a few minutes out of your life to hear about the savior Jesus Christ?

I'm not saying that he is the only person who knows anything about gopher basketball, but I get sick and tired of hearing people on these boards sit there and assume people who work in sports know nothing about them. Do you see the missteps in logic with that?

WOW - you saw Willy at Nic Park - I'm sooooo Jealous. I sorta remember that exhibition game but did not go - I was pretty young then too. :)

I can't say if it was at Nic or the Met. I was really young. All I remember was some 'old guy' on my right that was showing to me how to keep score in scorebook. He must have been at least 30.

Do you know how many years they played that ex game. Did they play it once a year?

Ball Hog...hardly

I think Devoe got tired of seeing Hoffarber running around the floor not getting any shots while he sat on the bench. He had way more chance to create his own shot than Hoff does yet Hoff got the time.

But then anytime we get a guard that is willing to shoot, many of we fans call him a ball hog and selfish. We'd rather see Hoffarber running up and down the court not shooting than see Westbrook or Joesph trying to create something. It's fine if they score but if they don't they are ball hogs and "good riddence" to them.

Westbrook was our only go to threat last year and many whined about him. Joseph was our only go to threat this year and many whined about him.

Hollins can be the next go to guy but God forbid he miss a shot or two. That is the surest way to become a "Ball Hog".

It might have been at the Met in '56 or '57 but after the Giants moved to San Fran in 58, the Giants became personna non grata around these parts so I doubt they played at the Met after that.

It seems the Giants may have played a few Exhibitions at Nic Park - maybe as an apology for calling up Willy from the Millers in '51 when he was hitting around .500. They did take out a full page ad apologizing in the Mpls Tribune.

Stew Thornley has a book about Nicollet. If I get time out of my busy day I will look it up a lil later.

I'm sure the fact that Hoff is by far the best on the team in assists and is playing pretty good D (2nd on the team in steals) and is probably our most balanced player didn't earn him the right to be on the floor.
