Morgan One of 12 Semifinalists for The Manning Award

Fleck will declare it a competition, and in some aspects it might be, but Morgan now has a year of in game experience ahead of Annexstad where Annexstad wasn't even practicing due to injury. Honestly, I would not be opposed to someone unseating Morgan, as that would hopefully mean we have someone better than him which would be phenomenal, but I doubt that happens. I think Morgan has enough of an experience gap to keep the spot next year. Now assuming all 3 backups stay healthy, Morgan stays healthy, and the 4 star QB currently committed for 2021 are all participating in spring 2021 practice, then I can see there potentially being an actual competition.

At that point too, I expect someone transfers. Someone will be #4 and or #5 after spring ball (if the 4 star jumps some of those currently on the roster), and unless they are happy with that and love the U for their education, I'm assuming #4/#5 transfers after 2021 spring practice.
I'd be surprised if Athan (the 4*) doesn't redshirt his freshman year. Based on Twitter (I know that isn't exactly a great source, but it's all I have), he seems to be another one of those Morgan/Bateman types in that he's already completely bought in to Fleck and RTB. If him redshirting would be best for the team in the long run, I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem with it.

I think there’s a 99.9% chance he starts, but if he for some reason didn’t I don’t think he transfers.Based on all of his press conferences and everything he seems like someone who wants to stick it out with Fleck no matter what.

Don’t bank on that. He’s top 6-7 in the country , and #1 in the Big Ten in numerous categories. He may be loyal to Fleck, but that only goes so far.

Nice! Redshirting would be great! I'm Thinking if our 4 current QBs stay and are all healthy in spring 2021, whoever is at the bottom of the depth chart will probably transfer. With a 4* QB coming in and redshirting, you probably don't have a shot at ever seeing the field at that point, so if that was important to you, I'd imagine a transfer happens. Plus, how many teams have 5 scholarship qbs? I know in freak situations it might be handy, but don't most max at 3 or 4?

I know we are not used to having depth at the QB position but I am really surprised by some of the comments in this thread. No one actually believes Fleck would say the job it 100% open right?

To be clear, there is zero QB controversy of any kind right now. Competition is always open at every position but for one of the other QBs to take the job from a healthy Morgan they would have to bring something truly elite to the table.

The QB situation heading to 2020 is in a very different place then it was heading into the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Sucks some for Annexstad but his injury allowed for the separation to take place between him and Morgan. We are not in a 1a/1b situation anymore.

Morgan is the starter. He could lose his job at some point to injury or poor play but outside of that I will be shocked if another QB on the roster is able to outplay him and win the job. If it happens.....I mean imagine having a QB on the roster that the coaches felt was better then the guy who just threw for almost 3000 yards and 28 TDs.....that would be a really really special player.

Good players make each other better. Nobody disputes that. Morgan is a pretty humble kid, and not one to talk himself up, or take credit for much. But, in your original post, you attributed comments to him that I’ve never heard. Has he ever said he’d be a bad QB at Rutgers? I seriously doubt it. If I’m wrong, show me the source.

I said he would be a bad QB at Rutgers. The expression "bad college QB" was put in quotes to indicate that it would be the fans saying he was "a bad college QB" just because he would be on a losing team just as the fans are now saying he is "a good college QB" because he is on a very good college team now. Find another rocking horse to ride.

Here’s your quote.

“Put Morgan on Rutgers and he would just be another "bad college QB", and he knows it and says it.”

If you were just being inarticulate, I can accept that. It happens to all of us.

It’s the norm for athletes and coaches to give credit to their teammates and staff, right? Every now and then yes you get someone that elevates themself but not very common.

When he has time, he can put it in the right spot 95% of the time (just making that number up but he's very accurate).

I think there are definitely skills that a QB either possesses, or lacks, that allow you to see if he’s good or not. Tanner’s pass to the back of the end zone to Autman-Bell for instance, I don’t know too many QB’s the Gophers have had that could pull that pass off. He put that ball so perfectly, that ONLY Autman-Bell could grab it. It was quite honestly the only spot he could have thrown it that it wouldn’t get picked off or gone incomplete. Awesome catch too obviously. But a good QB makes plays like that happen, a QB that only looks better due to the surrounding teammates does not make that happen. And that’s only one instance, there are probably dozens of plays if you go back and watch the game film, that make Morgan stand out from an average QB. Morgan’s stats, things like efficiency, can’t be that good without Morgan being AT LEAST above average.

He is an excellent QB in many ways. His leadership, grit, passing accuracy and game management are elite. And I think he will get better over the next couple of years if he stays healthy. We are lucky to death to have him on our team. But, he is, as he says all the time, lucky to to be part of such an excellent collection of players and coaches. The QB always gets too much credit and too much blame from the fans in general. And, as an aside, I do not think, in net, Tanner is any sort of NFL type QB, not that I personally care about that at all. His foot speed is poor to average, he is too short and he does not have that classic "deep out" type of arm strength. Overall, he is more the excellent "game manager" than the classic "natural". IMHO.
