Maybe should bring in Brockington, Hoskins and possibly Lanier on deep patterns. They would provide more speed.

You're certain they are faster than Spencer, Crooms, and Jackson? Can they catch a deep ball? Run routes? (speaking more about Hoskins and Lanier)

Hoskins for sure is faster and Brockington looks faster to me when he’s in the game. Lanier has been called another Bateman and you know Bateman was fast.

I can't say I've even really seen us set up to throw a "shot" play. One of my gripes with the offense so far. Use ALL the field, not just the 20 to 25 yard chunk you're on. Even when we went "max protect" a couple times this week they were still intermediate crosser routes (with 2 guys in the route like its the 70s).

We know for sure Hoskins is faster than Jackson, Spencer, and Crooms? Are you looking at high school track numbers? Jackson claimed a 4.50 40 in high school and I saw at least one track time of Jackson's faster than Hoskins.

My point is, maybe Hoskins is fast, but also the other guys? And if they know how to catch a ball, run routes, block, take a hit, etc., they are going to get playing time over Hoskins.

Whoever it is they need to be doing lots of reps...both during practice and whenever else they can do it on their own time. We don't have the athletes to just make this happen naturally. Needs to be mental timing and route memory plus plain aggressive play. Not there yet.

Brockington has been out there a lot.

With AKs on and off “touch”, I’m not sure more deep throws are very high % calls.

You're right, but I'm not sure all deep balls are intended to be completed (the offense wants that outcome of course) but to see how the defensive backs react. I believe Nebraska saw something in the Gopher defense that gave them the idea a throwback to the quarterback would work and they were right although being Nebraska they tried to screw it up.

Not very many deep balls have been thrown and as I recall the receivers were very tightly covered. I never said that Jackson, Crooms and Spencer aren’t fast.

We haven't taken many deep shots but we know those plays are in the playbook....willing to bet we break some of them out this weekend and take some deep shots against North Carolina.

100m
Hoskins 11.04
Brockington 11.28
Lanier 11.36

Jackson 11.56

EDIT: to put this in perspective for gophers we all knew were fast, Jalen Myrick ran a 10.61 & Terrel Smith ran 10.41

Curious how Tyler Johnson, bateman, and decker would fit in those ranges.

Has Spencer even been playing? Didn't get to watch much of the last game. So far he's produced way below what I was expecting.

Jackson wouldn’t have even cracked varsity on my high school track team….

I suppose the 40 yard dash is far more telling of explosiveness and creating separation than the 100m.

I don't think they planned for opening up the passing game more than needed to win these last two games. I do think UNC is the right opponent to open it up more like Wisconsin game.

Yes. I don't know the play count, but he has been rotated in both games.

We’ve seen Jackson make deep catches in the past. It’s not a lack of speed that is the issue. If you don’t call play for a deep throw then it doesn’t get thrown.
