I think the Mods are running amuck with closing, locking, and merging threads. Back off and let the users decide what threads to start, read, and support. The rise of the ALL THINGS threads has made the site less readable and enjoyable, IMHO.

The straw that broke this camel's back was closing the infamous Shaka thread. What the heck!

Ok, now quick, merge, move, close or otherwise ban this thread before someone sees it.

The "all things" threads has run amok. I don't know of any other site that is so nazi about lumping everything in unreadable and unenjoyable 'all things' threads. It's ridiculous to have filter through a bunch of crap posts and pissing contests to get any real news on the subject matter.

This topic comes up every two or three months here. Would you prefer that every tweet that deals with a recruit in 2014 starts a new thread? I, for one, don't want to filter through 25 new threads every two hours. Pissing contests and crap posts won't go away because you don't have "all things" threads.

Fair enough but I don't recall threads burgeoning to that degree. Do I really need to wade through a 100 page thread to see if their is any REAL news? Mostly I don't even go into those threads anymore.

I agree with KyGopherfan:

I'm surprised we don't have an "all things all things" thread. That way we could just put everything into one thread.

If an "All Things" thread gets off topic the mods do a pretty good job of cleaning them up. The organization of threads is actually a reason I enjoy this board. To each their own I guess.

Why not? If people want to post/read about Shaka, what's the harm in that? Don't open it if you don't want to.

Thats exactly how I thought about Reid Travis thread, it was shut down the night he committed with people still talking about it, a lot people complained and wanted it shut down because he didn't pick the gophers, but there was obviously interest since people were posting, if you don't care anymore just don't open the thread, and it will eventually die on its own when people lose interest in it, its not like it was not a gopher basketball related, no need to shut down the thread just because it was bad news for the gophers

Serious question.....was it done that way 3 or 4 years ago? No "all things" threads? I don't have six years of history on this site. I just don't find it all that cumbersome to work from the back forward on those threads. Personal preference, I guess.

I honestly don't understand why people get so frustrated with it. Is it because people aren't aware there is a link that takes you directly to the first post you haven't read yet? Are people searching through countless posts they've already read? If so, it's time you learn how to use the internet.

I think the ALL THINGS concept started within the last year or so.

I think the ALL THINGS concept started within the last year or so.

The All Things concept started Tyus Jones' freshman year. People would start new threads every time a new Tyus article or update happened. At one point we remember there were 14 different Tyus Jones threads on the front page alone. We received numerous requests for a thread that combined it and people complained a great amount that we didn't moderate the board enough. Now we get complaints that we moderate too much, even though we rarely start All Things threads (those are often started by the posters themselves). The All Things threads do allow for efficient placement of Twitter updates. If people started a new thread for every recruiting tweet, people would complain.

This is an inexact science and we are continuously trying to improve the way we moderate the board. We believe we have a good balance but are always trying to improve and we appreciate everyone's feedback.

We don't, however, think a reference to us being "so nazi" is appropriate.

holy crap people complain SO MUCH on this board! the mods do a great job. i am on a lot of different sites and i think this is one of the best moderated boards around.

i just counted, at the time of this post, there are 5 "all things" threads on the front page which has 40 different threads. 5 out of 40 and people are bitching. dear lord.

can you imagine how many new threads there'd be for recruiting tweets? keep up the great work, this is the first site i go to each day and the last one i check at night. awesome contributors, content and articles.

haters always gonna hate.

Have you had administrative dinners at Gasthof?

I acknowledge there are case where an ALL THINGS thread may be appropriate. The Tyus thread is a perfect example. Now we have ALL THINGS THIS and ALL THINGS THAT, etc, etc. One of my objections is something may actually happen newsworthy and someone starts a thread on it but because there is a related ALL THINGS thread, the mods move the new thread into the ALL THINGS thread, effectively burying the actual news.

I am not going to open every ALL THINGS thread to see if there is any news. I should just be able to get on the Hole and see via thread titles what is happening.

And while I have your attention, why was the infamous Shaka thread just closed? Would the RichmondInsider Shaka thread even have existed if we had had an ALL THINGS COACHING CHANGE thread?

In any case, reasonable people can disagree. That is my two bits.

No, but its more likely that you would be able to judge from the topic whether there is anything really new worth reading. I hate sorting through all the bickering that inevitably tends to consume much of "all things" threads in order to see whether there is anything worth while.

Why not? If people want to post/read about Shaka, what's the harm in that? Don't open it if you don't want to.

A Shaka thread doesn't belong on the gophers basketball forum. It's excess clutter. Take it to the off-topic. On the other hand.....the mods could add an off-topic big ten sports board for these topics.

When things are announced and are official (ie we hire a new coach) there is usually a new thread started or the mods edit the title to announce the news. Any time something is "moved" the new thread is still visible on the board and if you click on it, it takes you to the thread that it was moved to.

I am not going to open every ALL THINGS thread to see if there is any news. I should just be able to get on the Hole and see via thread titles what is happening.

Do you log on every time you visit? If you do you'll be able to tell if there are new posts in the ALL THINGS thread which means there is some news or some discussion going on. If you only want news, I'd suggest using twitter. Here you are going to get news and discussion, in organized threads.

And while I have your attention, why was the infamous Shaka thread just closed? Would the RichmondInsider Shaka thread even have existed if we had had an ALL THINGS COACHING CHANGE thread?

Probably because it is off topic and there was already a little discussion on it as it related to Sandy Cohen in the Sandy Cohen thread. If you want to talk about Shaka so much I would suggest going to a VCU/Marquette board or starting a thread in the off topic forum.

This is just the way I see things, I'll let the GopherHole Staff speak for themselves.

I for one am aware of the link, but I still find that I am reviewing a lot of meaningless posts when checking a majority of "all things" posts. I find it easier to judge the potential interest of a new thread with a fresh topic.

If there is real news in a new thread, we normally don't merge that. It's also the reason why when we have a new Q&A, we put it in a new thread by itself and in an All Things Thread for those that like both options.

We opened the Shaka thread up about 20 minutes ago.

It's better than having to sort through pages of threads just to find something that was talked about a few days ago.

I'm not sure if everyone realizes, but there are two ways to go directly to the first new message in a thread since you last were in it. Either click the little blue button near the thread title in the forum pages or once you're in a thread just click the "view first thread" button at the top. So even if a thread is 150 pages long, just click on one of those and you'll be brought right to the last place you left off.

With this function you really don't have to sort through a lot of pages.

The Mods do a great job. Best site I visit. Keep up the great work.

"MODS: Stop Closing, Moving and Messing with Threads"

So you want the moderators to stop moderating the forum? I don't think that's how it works, friend.

You guys are doing a wonderful job! keep it up! I want to read about gopher stuff first... I don't want to read about some guy in northern Arizona if he is thinking about transferring. And I don't want to read about tyus jones if he is not going to be a gopher go to the duke board to talk about him. Thanks for your job well done

No friend, just moderate their moderation would be good.

A change that would address perhaps my major problem with "all things" threads" is to start a new thread when there is a significant new development rather than just amend the topic, especially in the case of very active threads. That way one who has not kept up with a large thread wouldn't have to shift through stale material to get to the new development material.
