Mitch McGary headed to NBA after marijuana test nets him shocking year-long NCAA ban

Beilein still has some talent coming back next season (LeVert, Walton, Irvin, Albrecht), but his coaching chops will be tested again next season. Losing 3 underclassmen to the draft doesn't happen very often, unless your name is Kentucky.

Still see Go Blue finishing nowhere lower than 5th in the B1G next season, but losing Stauskas/Robinson/McGary I'd certainly jump Ohio State and Michigan State ahead of Michigan into the top 3 at this point. McGary should be the last of the Big Ten early NBA declarations. With Michigan losing all 3 of those guys, my Big Ten top half (pre-summer) would be:

1. Wisconsin (clear favorite)
2. Ohio State (best of the rest)
3. Michigan State (still plenty of talent returning)
4. Michigan (a nod to Beilein's coaching acumen, and the key players coming back)
5. Iowa (cupboard far from empty despite loss of Marble; this seems like a safe spot after season-ending crash)
6. Illinois (gambling Illini will be significantly better offensively)
7. Nebraska (will be tough to repeat 2013-14, even with most everyone back)

Good list but our Gophers will be booting one of those teams out of the top 7.

On the surface, the penalty seems harsh and inconsistent with regular season penalties. The question is whether Mitch and the rest of college basketball KNEW the consequences of testing positive in the NCAA tournament. He can't be the only player in the tournament that tested positive. All seems kind of wierd and the whole story is not out.

I'm a little confused so maybe someone with more knowledge can clear this up for me. I read his account of what happened and the test was about 2 weeks from when he smoked his first and only joint? Does that stuff stay in your system that long? 2 weeks? I'm not sure I'm buying what he's selling. Based on fellow employees in my previous job I was under the impression it most likely would be out of your system in just 2-3 days.

96% of this whole forum has already spiraled out of control, which is why it is so popular with all of us. The 4% that has not spiraled out of control are comments deleted by the Mods. :)

Awesome.... Simply awesome.

When it comes to weed, always believe what the next guy tells you.

Hopefully more than 1. I'm curious to find out if Nebraska can handle the expectations they're gonna' have going in to next season.

I'm curious with how this compares to punishments for other offenses, like violence against others, DUI's, academic integrity etc.

In some cases,I think it depends on how good of a player you are. Manziel gets thrown in jail for disorderly conduct, underage drinking (19-years-old) at the time, use of a fake ID (had 3 of them in his wallet)... All in one night. Broke 3 laws and he got suspended for what?? Two quarters in a non-conference game if I remember right. Complete Hypocrisy.

He probably thought that since he was injured and sitting out the season that he wouldn't be tested.

The residual chemicals stick around for a long time. If I'm remembering correctly from physiology, the chemicals are stored in fat tissue and aren't soluble in blood. So it takes it a long time to metabolize out of the body.

So if a college kid tokes up he gets a year suspension, but when players like Justin Drummond from Toledo get hit with a DUI at the age of 20, he gets suspended for 1 game? Drummond broke two laws: driving under the influence and underage drinking. Furthermore, he got arrested and slapped with a Misdemeanor. McGary smokes weed sometime within the last 30 days or so and gets a one year ban? The NCAA have their heads buried in the sand. This punishment is ridiculous. Doing what McGary did is LEGAL in two states; what Drummond did is illegal in every form and also puts others at risk (other drivers on the road). The move on McGary's part isn't smart, but a year suspension? C'mon. It's clear, at least to me, that Alcohol is way more dangerous than weed, and when people drive under the influence, it even becomes more dangerous. Apparently the NCAA has their own opinions about Marijuana and how "serious" it is. Reefer Madness!!!! 10,000 people are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents and Drummond gets a 1 game suspension.. Unbelievable.

+1

It depends from person to person but THC can stay in your system for over a month. Their are things you can do to flush your system out, such as excercising and drinking a crap-load of fluids. It would help accelerate removing THC metabolites from the body. But it's not an exact science.

That's what bothers me. It reminds me of the MPAA. Blood and guts? PG-13 rating. Show a nipple? At least R...maybe worse.

Who did Wisconsin lose?

Bigger question... Who will Iowa State gain?

God Hoiberg isa genius. He even figured out how to help Royce White become a millionaire without doing anything.

I believe Bo refused to allow any of his lads to be tested. Therefore no Badgers were caught and thus no Badgers were suspended. Bo knows the rules.;)

Well done, sec105.  :cool02:

Seeing as the NBA and marijuana go hand in hand, I doubt he needs to worry in the NBA.

Nonsense! Although first time offenders may get off with a brief suspension and fine, repeat offenders are banned for significant periods. Just ask Chris "Birdman" Anderson who was banned for two years.

The idea some people have that the NBA is loaded with unchecked hoodlums just isn't based on reality. Perhaps things may loosen up a bit now that there is a new commissioner, but Stern ruled player conduct in the NBA with an iron hand.

Yes, he does deserve some credit for that. Hoiberg was the only coach in recent history who managed to get Royce White to keep his head straight and focused for a couple of years. The Gopher, Rockets, and Sixers organizations all failed. But I guess Fred might have failed too if Royce had stayed at ISU long enough.

Wasn't Birdman banned for meth

Christ, one year? What a joke of a suspension.

Yet another reason why I support the players in getting out from under the idiotic NCAA rules and regs. One year suspension for smoking dope is as idiotic as no federal financial aid for a possession conviction.

Its ****ing pot and 70% of all americans have smoked it at least once in their lifetime. It isn't a gateway drug, its miller lite for christs sake!

-3 of the top 4 scorers for Michigan will not be back next year
-4 of the top 5 rebounders for Michigan will not be back next year

*Bottom Line- They will take a massive drop, and there's no reason why we shouldn't finish higher in the Big Ten next year than them.

Where was Refer Madness when you need it, McGary obviously didn't get a chance to see it.

I disagree. I think Philly tried pot the same way I did...Mom's cast iron frying pan was hot and smoking, so I thought smoking pot was just that... I burned both of my cheeks because of smoking pot. Sheesh, and you pups think you are so worldly!!!

My question on this is if the NCAA has confirmed McGary's story? I know in the NFL players who are found violating the substance abuse policy will always just say it is adderall even if it. The NFL can't comment on it and it is less of a PR hit for the player.

I am curious if all of the info on this story is coming from McGary and Michigan and if the NCAA is allowed to confirm/deny it.

One year is quite excessive. That leads me to believe there's more to the story than McGary is letting on. The NCAA can't say anything because of privacy issues, unless they're interested in opening themselves up to a(nother) lawsuit. McGary probably is best served shutting his mouth and quietly moving on to the NBA.

Doing what McGary did is LEGAL in two states;

What McGary did is against the policy of the NCAA in EVERY state.

Just like it is against the policy in the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL for every player in every state.
