McGary was contemplating whether to enter the NBA draft or return for his junior season. Coming back would allow him to prove his back was fine and continue enjoying life in Ann Arbor. His play could bolster his NBA draft stock. It was an attractive option.

That's when he was called into a meeting with Beilein and athletic director Dave Brandon. They told him he failed the drug test during the NCAA tournament. Then they informed him of the NCAA's harsh penalty for a first failed test: a minimum one-year suspension from all competition.

If he wanted to play college ball again, it wouldn't be until the 2015-16 season.

"The penalty is a year," McGary said.

No longer was there a debate about his future. McGary will enter the NBA draft by Sunday's deadline, he told Yahoo Sports. He's confident in his future, but says he didn't really have a choice. The NCAA penalty cemented the decision for him.

"It's just with the NCAA and their strict rules, they don't show any mercy," McGary said. "They take their things seriously."

Go Gophers!!

Lol. Is this real life?

His quote is priceless. "They take their things seriously."

Yup, and it's clear that you do not, Mitch.

The entitlement of some kids. Take a scholarship, worth thousands, smoke it away and have the audacity to comment "They take their things seriously". He sounds no where near smart enough to be in college anyway. Hope he fails a drug test in the nba as well.

Seeing as the NBA and marijuana go hand in hand, I doubt he needs to worry in the NBA.

What's more shocking to me is that there are not A LOT more 1 year suspensions.

The 1-year suspensions must only be a result of NCAA testing. Because isn't it pretty much understood Big Mo failed a drug test administered by the U?

That was an expensive joint. Where do you suppose this idiot gets drafted?

He had a few drinks.

Probably dumb questions, but is the drinking age 21 in Michigan and was McGary 21 at the time?

Edit: born June 6th, 1992....Must have been.

A one-year suspension for a first offense of smoking weed? Christ that's ridiculous. No wonder these guys are thinking about a union.

That was my first question when I read this. Didn't Mo get out of the van with Spicoli?

McGary proves to be not that bright; however, the punishment does not fit the crime. A one-year ban isn't justifiable.

Had it been during the regular season the suspension would have been on the light (pardon the pun) side but because it was during NCAA time, NCAA rules take over and they brought the hammer down. Ouch.

Beilein still has some talent coming back next season (LeVert, Walton, Irvin, Albrecht), but his coaching chops will be tested again next season. Losing 3 underclassmen to the draft doesn't happen very often, unless your name is Kentucky.

Still see Go Blue finishing nowhere lower than 5th in the B1G next season, but losing Stauskas/Robinson/McGary I'd certainly jump Ohio State and Michigan State ahead of Michigan into the top 3 at this point. McGary should be the last of the Big Ten early NBA declarations. With Michigan losing all 3 of those guys, my Big Ten top half (pre-summer) would be:

1. Wisconsin (clear favorite)
2. Ohio State (best of the rest)
3. Michigan State (still plenty of talent returning)
4. Michigan (a nod to Beilein's coaching acumen, and the key players coming back)
5. Iowa (cupboard far from empty despite loss of Marble; this seems like a safe spot after season-ending crash)
6. Illinois (gambling Illini will be significantly better offensively)
7. Nebraska (will be tough to repeat 2013-14, even with most everyone back)

Wow, huge blow for Michigan. I wonder if they can get Horford to reconsider ...

Is there any B1G team with a better situation at post next year than the Gophers? McGary would've been it with Michigan; now I don't think so. (You could argue Wisconsin, but Kaminsky is more of a stretch 4).

A year ban for one failed weed test does seem quite ridiculous, but at the same time, how hard is it to just not smoke? Why risk it?

Living here in Colorado where the mary jane is legal it is quite laughable that a first offense is a year suspension. How many of these underage guys are drinking alcohol on a regular basis and most aren't 21? Believe me Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug. Part of the issue is how quickly alchohol leaves your system, whereas MJ can be detected a good 30 days later.

I just don' see it with Iowa, I know they return some talent, but this group collapsed last year and I just don't see someone who has that assassin give me ball attitude when they'll need it, big ten's gonna be loaded next year, ten teams that could contend for a bid, I bet we get eight teams

And...well... Because it's still illegal in 96% of America.

Agree that 7 or 8 bids will be a real possibility next season. Gophers and Maryland certainly capable of replacing some of the teams I have ahead of 'em, and I can't count out Indiana, even though Crean bugs the H out of me.

Not to derail this thread, but I see no reason why the Gophers shouldn't be in this mix. I think MSU is due for a pretty big crash next season with its top 3 players departing, we had a better season than Illinois last year and arguably a better season than Iowa, who is losing their best player. Nebraska won't be sneaking up on anybody next year.

Austin will be missed, but considering the depth Pitino has added in I'd say the Gophs should be an improved team. Maryland is the other team that could surprise some people and sneak into the top half.

I agree with Indiana, plenty of talent, my brother goes to school there so I don't completely hate them, but the Harbough's seem to have rubbed off on him. Big Ten is going to be exciting next year

Iowa is deep still, but they will definitely miss Marble who made most of their end of game plays. Illinois could be improved but not up to 6. I like the gophers better than Illinois. We have to replace Austin's defense and a few players should pick up the scoring. That's not as much as most teams are losing.

Maryland may have the 2nd or 3rd most talented roster on paper. How they adjust to the big ten will determine a lot though.

I'm gonna be watching this thread spiral out of control....

96% of this whole forum has already spiraled out of control, which is why it is so popular with all of us. The 4% that has not spiraled out of control are comments deleted by the Mods. :)

Yes, hard to imagine the Gophers dropping from 7th to 8th or below, even with Maryland added. That would be a disappointing season for my money.

Yep, I'm looking forward to seeing Maryland on a more regular basis next season. Terps could be a real wildcard; they're a quality addition to the Big Ten, basketball-wise. Rutgers? Not so much.

Perhaps we should make crossing the street illegal sometimes bad things happen. No really drinking booze and gambling are good... I think we should wire our press and elected officials with remote controlled tazers that fire at 60 percent disapproval...
Have a smoke, a drink and remember it is a gamble to cross the road…

So if a college kid tokes up he gets a year suspension, but when players like Justin Drummond from Toledo get hit with a DUI at the age of 20, he gets suspended for 1 game? Drummond broke two laws: driving under the influence and underage drinking. Furthermore, he got arrested and slapped with a Misdemeanor. McGary smokes weed sometime within the last 30 days or so and gets a one year ban? The NCAA have their heads buried in the sand. This punishment is ridiculous. Doing what McGary did is LEGAL in two states; what Drummond did is illegal in every form and also puts others at risk (other drivers on the road). The move on McGary's part isn't smart, but a year suspension? C'mon. It's clear, at least to me, that Alcohol is way more dangerous than weed, and when people drive under the influence, it even becomes more dangerous. Apparently the NCAA has their own opinions about Marijuana and how "serious" it is. Reefer Madness!!!! 10,000 people are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents and Drummond gets a 1 game suspension.. Unbelievable.
