Missouri fan discussions

Many if not most Gopher Board members wanted Missouri added to the Big Ten back in 2010. Think that some people in Missouri expressed the same sentiment didn't they?

Beat me to it Ice. Mizzou instead of Nebraska.

Yes he can. When it comes to the air, though, he sometimes does more damage to us.

In fairness to Leidner, when he shows up with his "A" game, he can do things through the air too. He is just about the definition of hit or miss when it comes to passing.

Regarding fan excitement, don't take it personally. I think a lot of people either wanted to see us play a more traditional name, like Wisconsin, .

O.K. Bob, I'm going to have to stop you right here. First of all, WI only started playing D-1 in the mid 1990’s. So unless you’re under the age of 20, there is no football tradition there. Second, never, ever again mention that awful state while you’re on this board. Since you’re new to GH, we’ll forgive you this one time. If it happens again, you’ll be subjected to unimaginable physical and psychological pain. The same goes for the state immediately to our south. ;-)

With that out of the way, welcome to Gold Country!

Seriously, we look forward to chatting it up with you Mizzou fans.

SKI-U-MAH and Go Gophers!

Yes, I would say many, if not most, of Mizzou fans wanted out of the Big 12 and into the B1G. Really, we wanted to get away from Texas and how backwards they ran the conference -- and don't be fooled UT runs that conference. Look at the problems they have now? At the time, revenue shares were unequal and many other problems existed. The B1G looked to be a perfect landing spot.

A lot of Tigers fans were PISSED when NU was chosen. Now, I'm not sure if it's accurate, but there were a lot of rumors that MU and it's Board of Curators turned down a B1G invite because we didn't want to be "Junior Members". It would have been a costly hit to take... No idea if that's true, but it's a rumor.

I don't think any Mizzou fan reasonably expected that one year later we'd be announcing that we're leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. But it's been an awesome move for us.

Fair enough! I won't mention that name again!

I see that you guys hate Wisconsin as much as we hate kansas (the k can never be capitalized!).

Round here some call her becky. LoL!!!

Lesson to be learned here...both wisky and ioaw are small case too.

If everyone remembers that...

MizzouBob, first of all, welcome! I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Nebraska and specifically their fans. They are pretty well known to be very hospitable and I know a lot of Gopher fans that have said as much when they've attended games down there the last few years. What do Missouri fans think of Nebraska fans? Would you say they are pretty gracious, or will that maybe change the more we continue to beat them? :)

Life is good. Gophs in January 1 Bowl, good conversations with MIZZOU fans, game analysis, and some darn funny stuff on this Thread (message to Coaches, Tess, the Single reference, etc.)

MIZZOUBob - if you get a chance, I'd highly recommend checking out @MinnSpecialists Twitter page.
Our specialists have their own Twitter account and their posts are quite comical. They all seem to be a close group of guys with a great sense of humor. I would think other Gopherhole members would concur.

I will capitalize Iowa. They have at least a semblance of a claim for a National Championship. Respect National Championships.

Sorry wisconsin football. Lower case for you.

Regarding our rivalry, words cannot express how much I HATE kansas. HATE. I wish we still played them, so we could whip their a$$ by 40. That hate will NEVER go away either.

Sounds like you still resent John Brown for taking out those Bushwhackers... :cool02:

I concur. Very funny and creative twitter account.

Welcome, Zuofan. Love your state. I've been all over it: St. Louis, KC, Springfield, Cape G., Current River, Eleven Point River, Johnson's Shut Ins. Great place to kayak or canoe on your beautiful rivers and KC is a great city (don't like St. Lou as much) for a weekend. Missouri is hot as hell in the summer but I never seem to mind that when I'm there.

Our team has three weeks to prepare, so our coaches may throw out some new wrinkles, but here's a general description of what to expect. Our team's offense is built on a power running ball control game designed to keep the game in the twenties or low thirties. Our qb won't win any passing awards but he's capable of throwing a big one now and then. If he throws 25 or more passes in the game, then your defense has taken us out of our game.

Our defense is pretty good overall but better, relatively speaking, against the pass than the run. They can look surprisingly porous for a couple of drives and then tighten up. They are very aggressive in going after turnovers. Special teams is the area of the game where we have probably been the most consistent although our placekicker is a freshman who isn't yet all that reliable.

No offense but KC is a dump. I took a short cut from the Plaza to Kaufmann stadium and I thought I was going to get shot.

I was at the Feb. 10, 1996 Mizzou vs Kansas basketball game in Columbia - Mizzou won 77-73 over the #3 Jayhawks. It was a fun game to see and I definitely could sense the rivalry.

Hey there friendly Gopher fans. I have to say that I'm (excited is not the right word), anxious (maybe?) to watch Mizzou play the Gophers, if only because I really enjoy playing teams that we don't or have never played before (in my lifetime anyway). I, like many Tiger fans I think would have enjoyed getting Nebraska, but that is ONLY because they hammered us for so many years and so I think Mizzou fans always get giddy at a chance to beat the Huskers. That being said, Minnesota is a respectable matchup and I think will be a good, close and fun game. I feel like Big 10 teams always give us fits (our bowl game vs Iowa a few years ago in which we were supposed to win), as well as Northwestern, which we barely squeaked out......And well, there's that team from Bloomington. Ugh.

Mizzou's Tigerboard is HORRIBLE! (and I'm not just talking about the layout). Honestly, there really isn't any good Tiger message boards. I go to SEC RANT or SEC TALK. There are still goofballs on them, but not like Tigerboard. I refuse to ever look at Tigerboard.

Anyway, looking forward to some interesting conversation during the next few weeks.

M-I-Z-Z-O-U

The most intense Missouri/Minnesota games were probably the two coached by Dan Devine and Murray Warmath, two great defensive coaches. The 1961 game ended 6-0 Missouri, and the 1962 game 0-0, with one of the games played in a September sleet storm. These were two of Minnesota's best modern teams, losing only two games each season, and going to the Rose Bowl after the '61 season.

Hi all! As a Missouri native/Mizzou grad transplanted to Madison these last nine years, I am enjoying this thread, especially the Wisconsin smack talk. Badgermania kinda drowns out everything else here. All I get through co-workers and the media is something like "Badgers good, Ohio State/Minnesota bad." Which is more amusing than anything else. Given my allegiances, I have no real enmity, but it's kinda like white noise. A _lot_ of white noise.

I have to confess near total ignorance of the Minnesota team this year; I'm hoping to learn more here. That said, I think the Citrus Bowl will be close, given what I do know having watched the Tigers all year. I think they have the talent to pull away from any non-elite team if the offense is clicking, and can be dangerous on special teams. They also have the ability to totally stink it up on that side of the ball.

I've been to Lincoln twice for games -- both times were loses. :(

I would say that Nebraska fans, by and large, are pretty nice people. They take pride in being known as a friendly fanbase. However, when you start beating them regularly, prepare to hear stories from Nub fans complaining about how they were treated when visiting your stadium. They can be whiners. And many younger Nub fans tend to have this sense of entitlement, even though Nebraska was last relevant when they were in diapers.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

I much prefer St. Louis. Then again, it's home for me.

Mizzou/Kansas games can get pretty testy. I had to be taught the rivalry, being from the eastern part of the state. But my western Mizzou brothers -- it's bred in them. Their hatred for that dirty bird (jayhawk) is fierce. Mizzou would like to continue to play kU, but they're a bunch of whiny b*tches and refuse. They're still butthurt that we left their inferior conference.

Sounds like you still resent John Brown for taking out those Bushwhackers... :cool02:

Aaah... You know your history. That's the uniqueness of the Mizzou/kU rivalry. I have friends from the western side of the state who have relatives they know who were murdered by kansas raiders during the Civil War. So, the hatred for all things kansas is taught to them at an early age.

Because you know about John Brown and the Bushwhackers (by the way, both sides were in the wrong), you might find this interesting... It's a T-shirt Mizzou fans sometimes wear when we would play kU.

It's hard to see in this picture, but as you can tell, it says Scoreboard. And then above it is a picture of when the Quantrill's raiders burned Lawrence to the ground in 1856.

So, yeah, there's still plenty of bad blood among the two schools, even though we don't play each other anymore.

Lets just hope this game is as exciting as the 1997 NE/Mizzou "Flea Kicker" game at Mizzou. Funnest football game I attended while I was living in NE. Mizzou fans were not very gracious after that loss.

I'm sure they were not. Lots of hate in Missouri directed towards Nebraska, as well. It happens when one team constantly runs the score up on you for about 15 years, during Mizzou football's dark ages. Before we left the Big12, it became a very even match-up with teams alternating W's every other year, it seemed.

Today, I openly root against the Huskers. I just can't stand them. I absolutely loved their hire of Mike Riley. That should ensure Nebraska football sucks for at least the next 5-7 years.

The Tigers had a chance to make it 3 in a row in 2009, until Suh rolled Gabbert's ankle in the rain.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do root for the Badgers when they play Nebraska. I was very gratified that the Cornhuskers' welcome to B1G conference play was a complete waxing at Camp Randall.

To return to the original thread topic: unless I missed it, I don't think anyone's linked to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Mizzou Talk forum. You'll find some serious discussion there, with a light sprinkling of trolling, mostly by fans of other programs.
