I always like to check out opponent fan boards but Missouri appears to be unexpectedly light in this area. "Tiger board" appears to be an old fashioned style message board where it is tough to navigate discussions (especially on a phone). The Rivals board looks decent but is a pay board. Everything else I have seen looks to be low traffic.

Any links to good discussion?

What I have seen so far boils down to three themes:
1. Gophers are a boring opponent in a good bowl game.
2. Some respect for coach Kill. He will have the team ready to play.
3. Gophers will be slow and unathletic compared to the Tigers.

Hey there friendly Gopher fans. I have to say that I'm (excited is not the right word), anxious (maybe?) to watch Mizzou play the Gophers, if only because I really enjoy playing teams that we don't or have never played before (in my lifetime anyway). I, like many Tiger fans I think would have enjoyed getting Nebraska, but that is ONLY because they hammered us for so many years and so I think Mizzou fans always get giddy at a chance to beat the Huskers. That being said, Minnesota is a respectable matchup and I think will be a good, close and fun game. I feel like Big 10 teams always give us fits (our bowl game vs Iowa a few years ago in which we were supposed to win), as well as Northwestern, which we barely squeaked out......And well, there's that team from Bloomington. Ugh.

Mizzou's Tigerboard is HORRIBLE! (and I'm not just talking about the layout). Honestly, there really isn't any good Tiger message boards. I go to SEC RANT or SEC TALK. There are still goofballs on them, but not like Tigerboard. I refuse to ever look at Tigerboard.

Anyway, looking forward to some interesting conversation during the next few weeks.

Please post here often.

It's kind of amusing to read the Mizzou reaction to getting us, it's kind of like last year when we got 'cuse. People whined and moaned that our season was too good for the bowl to be spent playing the Orange. And then we fell apart late and lost to them. Good times.

Welcome, ZouFan!

Just adding on to what he said, it seems like most of the people who are disappointed in facing Minnesota are most disappointed because they were hoping for a big rivalry game with Nebraska.

But you're right, that Tigerboard is like something out of 1997.

Gopher fans have no complaints about being matched up with Missouri. You were the favorite potential opponent from the south in this poll that was done before the bowl matchup: http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/showthread.php?58635-Who-do-you-prefer-for-our-Deep-South-opponent.

the U record against Missouri

3-4-1. let's even this thing up.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'll be perusing the boards in the next few weeks and I'm looking forward to learning more about Minnesota football (which admittedly I know extremely little about)...Have any questions about Mizzou, feel free to ask. Most of our posters are pretty good, but you know how message boards go. I just hope the punks stay away.

Welcome, Zuofan. Love your state. I've been all over it: St. Louis, KC, Springfield, Cape G., Current River, Eleven Point River, Johnson's Shut Ins. Great place to kayak or canoe on your beautiful rivers and KC is a great city (don't like St. Lou as much) for a weekend. Missouri is hot as hell in the summer but I never seem to mind that when I'm there.

Our team has three weeks to prepare, so our coaches may throw out some new wrinkles, but here's a general description of what to expect. Our team's offense is built on a power running ball control game designed to keep the game in the twenties or low thirties. Our qb won't win any passing awards but he's capable of throwing a big one now and then. If he throws 25 or more passes in the game, then your defense has taken us out of our game.

Our defense is pretty good overall but better, relatively speaking, against the pass than the run. They can look surprisingly porous for a couple of drives and then tighten up. They are very aggressive in going after turnovers. Special teams is the area of the game where we have probably been the most consistent although our placekicker is a freshman who isn't yet all that reliable.

Welcome. If you can get this message to your coaches, that would be great:

"Minnesota is a pass-happy team that doesn't like to run between the tackles. Slow linebackers and a spotty defensive backfield. Special teams are iffy. We win most games by airing it out."

I have always found the SB Nation sites have pretty good conversation on them.

I'm calling Coach Pinkel, Steckell and Henson as we speak.

First of all, the only good Mizzou board is unfortunately a pay board. It's on PowerMizzou.com, which I do subscribe to and have for years.

Tigerboard wouldn't be so bad, except it's just a horrifically designed site.

Regarding fan excitement, don't take it personally. I think a lot of people either wanted to see us play a more traditional name, like Wisconsin, an old Big 8/12 opponent like KSU, or even Notre Dame (we were rumored to play them in the Music City).

Personally, Mizzou fans who are fans of CFB know what an amazing leader Coach Kill is. I've admired him from afar for a long time, and it broke my heart last year to watch him battle his health problems. I was legitimately excited to see him able to coach from the sidelines all year in 2014. I hope his health continues to be steady.

Coach Kill is a great one. To know so, you simply have to look at his record. I first heard about him at Southern IL, as I'm from St. Louis. He did great things at Northern IL, and next year, being his 5th year at MN, I wouldn't be surprised to see you guys win 10 games. That 5th year seems to be a big launching point... All of the kids in the program are yours. If you look at Gary Pinkel's record, Mizzou really began taking off in his 5th season in Columbia -- he's since had double-digit wins in 6 of his last 9 seasons... Every other year, he's won 8 ballgames, except for our first year in the SEC when he slipped to 5.

Coach Kill and Coach Pinkel do it the right way... They build programs. When you have a program, you can sustain for the long haul. And considering your weaker division, you could easily become the leader in the West for a very long time... Wisconsin is beatable, and you guys got some great news in Nebraska's idiotic hiring of Mike Riley. That should sink them for the next 5-7 years.

That's great. Anyone here used to be a regular on that sight?

There are quite a few regulars from back then who are still around, especially on the basketball board. BleedGopher probably only had 5,000 posts back in 1998....

As golden boy said, we went through the same thing last year when we were matched against Syracuse. Then we went out and played an atrocious game and lost in the final minute. I expect both teams to be fired up for this game, though. Mizzou put their SEC title game loss last year behind them in winning the Cotton Bowl.

Side note, my high school/early college girlfriend went to Mizzou, so I spent a little bit of time on the campus. We went to the Border War game vs. Kansas in 1998 (second-most played rivalry in FBS behind Minnesota-Wisconsin) and I ended up getting hit in the back of the head with a goal post after the students carried it up the grass where we were seated. Fun times!

That's great! I lived in Columbia from 99-03. In those four years, 0 bowl games. It sucked. We thought that Larry Smith and his power option attack was bringing us out of the dark ages, but it was fool's gold. Larry was past his prime and didn't recruit well enough to take advantage of his "success" in '97 and '98.

Regarding our rivalry, words cannot express how much I HATE kansas. HATE. I wish we still played them, so we could whip their a$$ by 40. That hate will NEVER go away either.

Regarding the match-up, I expect a tight game. Mizzou hasn't blown anyone out all year. The offense simply isn't good enough. It just isn't. Even though we've won 10 games, it's been a very frustrating season -- mostly because we've been spoiled by so many high-flying offenses, including last year's offense. This team is much more ball control. If we run the ball well, we'll be in good shape.

This team is built on defense. I know UGA put 30+ and Bama put 40+ on us, but if you watched the game, that was much more a product of the completely inept offense. You can only expect a defense to play so many minutes before being burned out. That's what happened... they ran out of gas. But I'd argue this is the best defense we've seen in Columbia, MO, in at least 20 years.

This sounds like exactly what happened to us vs. TCU earlier this year. 5 turnovers put them in position to score often without having to work too hard for it. Our offense was totally inept that game.

You could almost say the same exact thing about the gophers. A team built on defense that at times has an inept offense. If our running game gets going Leidner (QB) can look like he belongs in the Big 10, but as somebody else stated earlier (sorry on my phone), if we are forced to pass the ball 25+ times it could be a long day.

That's exactly what happened against UGA. We had 5 turnover -- Mauk played the worst game of his career with 4 INTs. The Dawgs average field position was on OUR 40, I believe. It was a train wreck of a game.

But the Bama game was just Bama being Bama. They probably have the most talented roster from top to bottom in the country. And they just wore us down.

I don't want to talk about the IU game... Ugh... The Tigers took the field assuming they would win. You could see it in their body language. And then, IU smacked us in the mouth. If we go into THIS game wiht that mentality, it will be another long, bad day for my Tigers.

Ha! ;)

TigerBoard is great at being a live stream-of-consciousness style site. For those who have used it for years, they wouldn't want to use anything else, and that's why the site owner (Nick) hasn't changed over to something like this site. Where it lacks is grouping conversation topics under one thread and bumping them to the top when there's new activity. However, Tigerboard on gameday is a site to behold... quite entertaining, to say the least.

If any Missouri fans aren't excited to play Minn, it's only because they wanted to play an old Big XII rival like Nebraska, or because they think playing a Southern team like Clemson would be better for recruiting. I think everyone respects Minnesota and the job that Coach Kill has done, and is looking forward to a great game. This might be the most friendly bowl game of all time, if our two fanbases stay true to their reputations.

The strengths and weakness of each team can be debated, but bowl games are such a crapshoot. In recent years we've beaten highly ranked teams like Oklahoma State, while falling to Iowa and Navy a few years back (and needing OT to beat Northwestern). This game could really go either way with our terrible offense.

What I'm getting out of the cross talk is one team is going to win 4-2.

I'm calling Coach Pinkel, Steckel and Henson as we speak.

Your DC is the brother of the notorious Les Steckel. That name sends chills down the spine of every Viking fan alive in the mid 80's. Came to camp his only year as head coach dressed in cami's. Good times.

Did you know that Les Steckel's wife was named Tess? :cool02:

Looking at each team's results, all of the terrible offense talk may be a bit overstated. Our running game is usually pretty good, unless you're borrowing Bama's defensive line for the day. Looking at the box score from the Minny-Iowa game, it appears your QB can do some damage on the ground.
