Minnesota vs Penn State Post Game Thread

The big mistake the Gophers made at the end of regulation is that they were defending against the go-ahead TD
when they should have been defending against the tying FG. I think they would have stopped them if they had.
When you go to OT its a crap-shoot. I had a bad feeling that if it went to OT, we would lose, and that the home field
would actually matter in that.

Perhaps someone beat me to it, but i'm asking anyway...

but, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY AYINDE STILL SEES THE FIELD?

might be a great kid, but the dude cannot play football. Going back
to last year, he's been a huge liability, but we refuse to play McGhee,
Dior or Huff more. Somehow #4 still get sent out there to give up Tds..

Well dior is suspended

this would make a lot more sense if it were impossible to improve from things like experience, or learning under the best of all time, or you know, not being in your 30s when you get those HC jobs.

he's doesnt turn 42 until next year get a grip he's still a youngin

He sucks. Plain and simple. Must be tough to be the OC at Alabama, about a thousand guys could do that job.

and yet saban choose him - you think nick's that into charity work or can you just admit this is an objectively terrible angle to take on his credentials and coaching ability?

So do you think it shows our commitment to winning when we pay our head coaches what the SEC pays their OC and DC?

At the same time, if he is getting paid $2.5 million instead there would be many complaining that he is getting paid too much for someone with very little head coaching experience.

Let's go 7-0 at home and see where we end up.

Kill and his merry men have had very little or no recruiting at the BIG level.
The over all talent level after five years is not adequate to beat a not very good PennST team.
If there are not adequate $ to induce a talented OC or DC and capable assistants to come to MN and turn the program around the future will mimic the past.

The QB we face next week is better.

Well, we'll see. I've watched Beathard numerous times and I don't recall him playing as well as the PSU QB played today. Just because this guy doesn't have a name in the league yet doesn't mean that he might not be better than some who do. Maybe today was a fluke, but maybe not.

Two things on a big picture scale stood out to me today and they were the Gophers inability to generate a pass rush and the Gophers inability or unwillingness (I think it's inability) to threaten defenses vertically.

Positives:
Emmitt Carpenter- Those were some clutch kicks
Brian Smith: 7 for 101
Brooks/Smith: Both backs seemed to get more than what was blocked
The Gophers looked like the superior team

Was it Ayinde who missed the tackle on the 80 yard TD and in OT? Brutal. One of the biggest difference in the game was McSorley vs Leidner with pocket awareness. McSorley evaded the rush on 5-7 step drops and didn't takes sacks. Mitch took several shorter drops late in the game and just held on to the ball far too long resulting in a couple sacks at bad times. If just one of those McSorley Houdini plays doesn't work out or it Mitch doesn't throw that interception, the Gophers win the game. Really, really disgusted by the 26 yard run McSorley had to set up the tying PSU fg....absolutely no excuse for that to occur.

It's so disheartening that the Gophers get a huge break like that Rodney Smith facemask penalty...and then still find a way to lose the game.

We didn't have a lot of called run plays for Mitch today (or zone read). Would have liked to see more.

Emmit Carpenter has been money so far this season. I was skeptical about him replacing Santoso but it has worked out quite well so far.

In all our games we just do not have a killer instinct - we should have been up by at least two touchdowns. Start of third quarter - nice stop and we get ball in good field position. Time to control the game and move the ball down the field - but no - 3 and out and then the period from hell started. we can not stop running quarterbacks - they kill us all the time... Never should have lost this game...

Because he is the OC at Alabama doesn't mean he can do sh^t as a head coach. He sucked at a school with 4 and 5 star recruits, absolutely sucked. Yet your phantom argument is that because he's the OC at Alabama he' ll all the sudden be a very good head coach. In case you didn't know, there is a huge difference being a head coach than being the OC at Alabama. Just a tad difference, but I guess you think it's about the same. Good for you. It's no wonder so many schools went after him last year. You're take on this is awful.

well you got 'sucked in' twice so i guess now that basically means you've got a crush on me or something

This may be a little heavy for this conversation, but I'm trying to be honest.

In the grand scheme of things, today's game doesn't mean squat. Yeah, I would be very happy to see the Gophers become a stronger FB program - one that contends for conference and national honors. But, there are no guarantees in life. There are generations of Cub fans who have been born, lived and died without every seeing the Cubs win a World Series. Ultimately, being a fan - at least in my definition - means supporting a team. it doesn't mean "I will only support the team if they win and if they play the way I want them to play."

If the Gophers go 8-0 the rest of the season, I will root for them to win. If they go 0-8 the rest of the season, I will still root for them to win. But, it really doesn't affect my life in any meaningful way. It only impacts my life if I let it.

A football game is a football game. Real life is real life.

And now the kicker - this is what I mean by real life. Came home for lunch on Friday, checked my e-mail, and I had an e-mail from my sister - informing me that one of my cousins - a very successful and well-respected retired doctor - had killed himself. That's real life. Compared to that, Mitch Leidner throwing an interception doesn't mean squat.

My advice - forget about the stinkin' Gophers for the rest of the weekend. Hug your kids, kiss your spouse, and tell the people you love that you love them, because none of us know what tomorrow might bring. And now, I'm going to escape reality for a while and watch the first episodes of "Luke Cage" on Netflix. Shorty out.

You are so right! I am sorry for your loss!

nah thats not my argument here i'll help you out and make it real simple because you (and people like spoofin) seem to have trouble focusing on what i say versus making strawmen arguments to deflect and hate on lane kiffin our future HC and savior.

i am reasonably confident that kiffin has gotten better since his stints with the most dysfunctional organization in the nfl and a sanctions racked USC program. the fact that the greatest college coach of all time deems him worthy to coach a half of his ball team carries a lot more weight than mouth breathers on a forum sayin 'well shucks if he lost with a bunch of 4/5* recruits he must suck forever' even if he was in his 30s and extremely young when he rightly or wrongly got that shot.

could i be wrong? yea sure but im more confident in saban making determinations about coaching qualifications than i am so ill trust the guy with a handful of national championship rings. plus the dude is a certifiable badass and would piss off the local media like crazy and idk about you i dislike reusse/souhan and would love for them to get disrespected by kiffin in the media

Agreed 100%

This one hurts. Penn State was extremely beatable and Gophers have to win games like this to be taken seriously as a contender in the conference. Not a season killer by any stretch of the imagination but this will almost certainly be one of the games we look back on as a missed opportunity.

Plenty of winnable games on the schedule still, but blowing this one today makes it even more vital to knock off a very beatable Iowa team next weekend at home.

First game as underdog (technically). Have to start winning games we're not supposed to win. 0-1

On the plus side, we had two RBs go for 100. That probably doesn't happen too much in a loss.

agreed. today was a day to seize the advantage in the west (we are still dreaming of the BT title game shot) and we blew it directly out our a$$e$. Next week is shot #2. win that one, and there's still a chance. Falter again and it's looking impossible. Thinking wisco drops another one next week and nebraska still has wisco, iowa, and osu on the road. it's not over yet, but we shot ourselves directly in the foot today.

I hope this is Illinois 2014. A game that the Gophers had no business losing, just got away from them.

Spot on. Our OC's father passed away. Friends our our's grandfather had a massive heart attack today and may not awake. And that's just one day. In the proper context, bemoaning a loss seems silly.

Tell that to Alabama fans

IDK about others, but I come here to forget about the stresses of life even if just for a few minutes. None of this should be taken too seriously, even (and especially) the bickering and the politics.

In any case the overreaction to a loss (consider the different reaction here if they had missed the FG at end of regulation) is in full effect, and even I got into the act by suggesting Claeys take back the defensive play-calling from Sawve (which I don't totally back away from)l. That said, it seems like there are some "easy" fixes that would go a long way. For example, we have a fine defensive back named Antoine Winfield. Use him. Figure out how to defend dual threat QBs. Contain, contain, contain. McSorley was very impressive today. He's going to be a good one and I wish he were a Gopher.

We have emerging talents in Brian Smith and Tyler Johnson. We have Lingen coming back from injury in 3-4 weeks. We have some players that (may) be returning to shore up the pass D in Hardin and Buford. The coaches will hopefully stop trying to develop #4 and accept the limitations which is tough to do (coaches by definition are stubborn).

We have three stellar running backs. We have a good linebacking corps that is going to get to be very good. The future is unwritten. We can still save the season. BEAT IOWA.
