Didn't see any of these made yet so figured I'd start one. Mods please merge if needed.
So, that was a downright frustrating loss, more frustrating than any of the losses last year for the most part. Last year, when we lost close ones vs Michigan and Iowa, at the very least they were solid teams.
Breaking it down further, there were already problems in the first half. Obviously the drive where there was a holding penalty where the Gophers settled for a field goal instead of a touchdown was huge. However, the end of the first half was OK. MN had that last minute drive, kicked the field goal, had a 10 point lead on the road against a Big Ten opponent. Fair enough.
Second half, more or less, was a complete disaster in my view. The missed tackle on that 80 yard touchdown was awful, and the sequence of events after made it even worse. It was such a quick swing of momentum. Then, despite attempts to get the game back in order, some of Brooks' runs for example, the Gophers just couldn't find their groove again.
The final drive in regulation by PSU was terrible defensively. It was so frustrating to watch MN get beat in that last minute. The overtime wasn't much better, a horrible 3 and out and that last run was painful to watch.
From start to finish, Minnesota looked like the better team that just let PSU hang around. So many opportunities wasted, not enough good execution from either side of the ball, especially against a team missing so many line backers.
I try not to be a guy who says the sky is falling, I don't want to say "we're going to lose every other game now." I remember in 2013 when we bounced back for a nice run. Right now, though, it's hard to feel optimistic.
