Phil Miller's Gophers Insider: Jerry Kill should stay upbeat

The coach is reinforcing what's going right and keeping players from getting too down on themselves.

"We've got to find a way to rally the wagons here a little bit. We need to reward the seniors who have gone through so much," Kill said. "These kids have survived a lot of changes. They're coming to work every day. They're doing everything they can. We can't let them get down on themselves."

Looks like it could be a very nice and cool Saturday afternoon for football. Calling for highs in the mid-40's. Wish I could be there.

All they can do is move on, I mean, you can't beat yourself up over past games. You have five shots to go out there and bring a better game to the table. To meet their main goals, they need to win two of them. Hopefully we can get some important guys healthy so we can at least have a fighting chance at making this happen.

Gotta win this week though, this game is so important, really to both teams. They both desperately need wins, Purdue just lost a heartbreaker, and their season started with more optimism than ours did and yet, here they sit, in the same spot as us, worse cause they still need 3 wins to get to a bowl (Bet they'd take 4-0 over 3-1 with a "tough" ND loss right now lol).

I think we can pull this out, but Nelson needs to take advantage of what will likely be many chances to put points on the board, something we've been struggling to do since the WMU game. Our defense has been relatively stout at home, so if they can continue that, we should be in good shape.

@BTNTomDienhart: #Gophers (4-3) have lost 3 in a row; #Purdue (3-4) has lost 3 in a row; loser may have tough time getting to a bowl. #B1G #justsayin

Probably true though the remainder of Purdue's schedule is far friendlier than ours. Home against PSU, at Iowa, at ILL, IND.

Agree - To get to (6-6) this is the game they need.

Purdue: Pregame Thread

Nelson has his feet under him, hopefully the team comes to play Saturday. Both teams will be hungry to get their first B1G win. Hope the fans show up, we need a win in the worst way.

Preliminary forecast for Saturday: Sunny, high/low 39/30. Bring your parkas.

STrib: Gophers' Gray grudgingly steps into his new, old role

Ugh, I just want the best for this guy, just handles everything so well, even if the circumstances aren't what he wants them to be. I hope this team can make a bowl and Gray gets like 250 yards (passing, catching, and running) in it and leads us to a big victory. The kid deserves SOME kind of bowl success in his career, even if in the B-dubs bowl. Just has repped the U with great dignity and maturity.

Hate to re-hash Mason years as I am no Mason fan due to the way he just gave up, but I was home on my lunch break watching BTN and they had there greatest games segement on. The 2005 game against Purdue was on, man was it fun to watch Eslinger and Setterstrom pin and pull, run traps, zone reads and bull doze running lanes for Maroney and Russell! Sure did bring back good memories from being at that game in college!

Hopefully, we can see a strong preformance on Saturday against Purdue again. Looking forward to Phillip being in some friendly confines and hopefully lighting up a Purdue team that might be a little down on themselves after a heartbreaking loss!

Article from Rittenberg on B1G Ten ESPN Blog on Phillip Nelson:

Gophers move on with QB Nelson, WR Gray
October, 23, 2012

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is looking to the future, both with his program and with his best player.

Injuries to top quarterback MarQueis Gray (knee/ankle) and backup Max Shortell (shoulder) prompted Kill to burn the redshirt of heralded incoming recruit Philip Nelson last Saturday at Wisconsin. With only five regular-season games remaining, Kill will keep Nelson, considered the team's quarterback of the future, in the starting role.

Gray, whose knee/ankle issues prevent him from being full strength at quarterback, will work at wide receiver, a position at which he likely projects well in the NFL. The 6-4, 250-pound Gray came to Minnesota as a quarterback but played mostly wide receiver in 2010 and split time between the two positions after returning from his initial injury Oct. 13 against Northwestern.

"We made the commitment to pull the redshirt off Philip," Kill said Tuesday. "When you do that, you're going to play the youngster. We may play him and Max. I don't know, with our situation health-wise with MarQueis, when he'll be able to take some snaps. Right now, we just need to worry about keeping somebody healthy."

Kill didn't rule out using Gray at quarterback again this season, but said the fifth-year senior has missed valuable time and has more of a future at wide receiver. Gray finished second on the team in receiving in 2010, recording 42 receptions for 587 yards and five touchdowns. He has 52 receptions for 681 yards and six scores in his career.

Gray will sit out practice Tuesday, as Minnesota tries to get him ready for Saturday's pivotal home showdown against Purdue.

"I really feel bad for him, to be honest with you, because he's such a great talent," Kill said of Gray. "And he's a tough kid. A lot of kids wouldn't play through what he's trying to play through. I'm more concerned about him as a person and also his future. We talk all the time, and he understands where he's at. The most important thing is get him healthy."

Nelson completed 13 of 24 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in his collegiate debut, a 38-13 Minnesota loss to Wisconsin. He led Minnesota with 67 rush yards on 16 carries at Camp Randall Stadium, where his father, Pat, played fullback for the Badgers.

Nelson grew up in the Madison area before moving to Minnesota, and was heavily recruited by Wisconsin before choosing to play for his home-state school.

"It's kind of amazing, you take a true freshman, that's where his dad played, a tough place to play," Kill said. "I thought he was very composed. He made a mistake or two there, but we kind of put him in that situation because we were playing catchup.

"He did a really good job. I was very pleased with his effort."

PiPress: Gophers football appealed to Philip Nelson when Jerry Kill replaced Tim Brewster

"I'll admit, I wasn't really interested before (Jerry) Kill," Nelson, who started in his college debut Saturday, Oct. 20, in a 38-13 loss at Wisconsin, said at a news conference Tuesday. "Brewster never really recruited me that much. I was a little young, too. But as soon as Kill got here, it was like from night and day. I completely went from no interest to a lot of interest."

BTN Predictions:

Purdue (3-4, 0-3) at Minnesota (4-3, 0-3) – 3:30 p.m. ET, BTN/BTN2Go
Tom’s pick: Purdue, 27-24 – One of these teams will end a three-game losing skein. And it will be the Boilermakers, who have the better defense and more stability at quarterback.

Brent’s pick: Purdue, 31-20 – It’s hard to be confident in either team, but Purdue boasts a defensive front that could spell trouble for a freshman quarterback making his second career start.
