Minnesota is not a stepping stone

Name the last coach (hoops-football-hockey) to leave on their own accord? This is the furthest thing from a stepping stone job.

Holtz. He was also the last hot coaching talent on campus. Don't know if Pitino fits the "hot coaching talent" profile, but we'll find out.

In hindsight, wish Monson would have taken the U of Washington job. Then he would have been the answer to that question rather then that guy. Wonder what kind of angst that would have caused around town in 2002?

Denny Crum took a cesspool in a Louisville swamp and turned it into a place to go play basketball. There is no reason that the right coach can't do the same here in Minneapolis/St. Paul. That kind of effort comes from a young coach who is willing to out-work his fellow coaches.

People who think that Rich Pitino will bolt for a "better" school or to take over for his dad may not be right. Pitino Sr. ended up in Louisville after he failed at Boston (his home stomping grounds). If the U of MN provides the resources and facilities there is no reason to imagine that a coach won't stay here for a long time.

Of course the UM job is a stepping stone job. The admin doesn't take athletics seriously at the U. They are Big Ten cellar dwellers in recruiting budgets, and they are in desperate need of new facilities. Our antiquated arena is a classic. But it doesn't mean ANYTHING to the out of state blue-chipper. To them, Williams arena is a a dump. The U is losing the facilities arms race.

How about actual proof? The kind that isn't opinion. It's been well over 20 years since the last coach in Basketball, Hockey, or Football left for another job. Those of you arguing that we are a steeping stone program are basing this on fantasy since it just doesn't happen at all.

Love this comment by one of the posters on the Louisville Scout.com Forum:

"Great hire by Minnesota if they get him, I suggested them looking at someone like Richard when Tubby was fired. Give me Richard over Steve Alford any day. The Big Ten will have to prepare for an entirely different style of basketball look out"

Until they update the facilities it is a stepping stone for a better job for Teague, Kill and Pitino. That's not a bad thing though if they win and leave the program better off from when they got it who cares if they leave.

My thoughts exactly. If Pitino leaves 3 or 4 years down the road for a "better" program it's only because he turned us into a perennial tournament team. In which case we could make a big time hire.

the definition should be 'tripping stone' instead of 'stepping stone', who has ever 'stepped up' from the bb program except Bill Finch

Have to do a good job here in order to use it as a stepping stone. Doing well here (without violations) doesn't happen very often.

I think its premature to judge the current administration. Kahler and Teague haven't been here that long and both have expressed their commitment to building our basketball program.

Pitino is taking this job to prepare to takeover Louisville as Rick will retire soon. Rick has probably got about 3 more seasons left in the tank. It was imperative for his son to land a gig at a BCS school so that he can be in line for Louisville. And yes, Louisville is a way better job than Minnesota in every way.

I can think of 2 - Lou Holtz and Brenda Freese.

However, Mason and Tubby openly courted; it's arguably that this open courting led to their teams' (and their jobs') demise.

Not this new crew. There's something very different about these new guys.

Holtz left to stay one step ahead of the NCAA investigators. Just like he cheated and left Arkansas, ND, and South Carolina.

More tomb stone than stepping stone. Certainly not a destination.
