Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

And a number of years ago, everyone said Eden Prairie should build another high school. But now their enrollment is dropping, as would be expected.
OK but what is the number per class? Still over 1000 I'm guessing.

500 is a big high school, you won't know everyone in your class by a long shot. 1000 is pathetic.

A lot of Savage kids go to Prior Lake. Also a good number of Savage and Shakopee kids open enroll to Eden Prairie because they are scared of Shakopee and Burnsville.
Scared of Shakopee?? I thought a lot of Shakopee was McMansion house farms.

About 700. Wayzata is the largest at about 800 per class.
Here are the high school enrollments per the MSHSL.

Minnetonka High School 3198
Eden Prairie High School 2732
Blaine High School 2652
Prior Lake High School 2648
Stillwater Area High School 2636
Edina High School 2628
Champlin Park High School 2474
Shakopee High School 2281
Rosemount High School 2271
Maple Grove High School 2218

IIRC, those numbers are based only on three grades, because some districts only have 10-12 in high school? That may no longer be true.

I thought it was really odd that Eden Prairie, as a #1 seed got Farmington as a #2.
EP only had one loss, but Farmington was probably their toughest victory.

Lakeville South's toughest victory was against Shakopee, and those two teams also face each other if they both win their next games.

I think both teams would sooner play the other team's #2 opponent and it seems like normal seeding would have had Shakopee above Farmington.
I don't believe it's a true 1-32 seeding. They seed 1-8 in there section and then play cross overs with another section.

I think all high schools are 9-12 now.
Yep. The only large suburban district I can think of that still uses the Junior High model (7-9) and then 10-12 for high school, is Hopkins. At least I think they do. Everyone else has gone to the middle school (6-8) and 9-12 high school setup.

Right, but if the MSHSL counts only the top three grades when doing school size ... those numbers make more sense to me.

It doesn't matter if they make sense to you. That's not how they do it. This from the MSHSL...

MSHSL enrollment:

MSHSL enrollment is determined by the schools Minnesota Department of Education enrollment in year one in grades 9 – 12 minus 40 percent of their educational benefit. (free and reduced lunch)

The second part of that is interesting, because it bumps a Park Center down into a lower level than their actual student population.

The numbers that the MSHSL provides are 1) grades 9-12, and 2) adjusted down based on number of free and reduced lunches in the high school.

EDIT: info provided on the free/reduced adjustment.

Things shift about every 20 years+/-. Blaine is out of control right now with houses going up everywhere. Centennial/Blaine/Spring Lake Park overlap in this area, but are all different districts. The newest Elementary that opened in Blaine (Anoka/Hennepin) was over capacity the day it opened.

OK, so this confirms those numbers you listed are not their actual enrollments.

Wonder how Savage residents feel about shipping their kids over to Burnsville. Probably a fair number try to open enroll to Prior.
Part of Savage (older, eastern part) is in Burnsville's school district. The newer part of Savage is in Prior Lake's district. Prior Lake does have a lot of open enrollment from Burnsville.

A huge chunk of Blaine is actually Spring Lake Park district, oddly enough.

Unfortunately not where all the new houses are being built.

This year Blaine had 9A/9B, 10A/10B, JV and Varsity Football. Spring Lake Park had 9/JV/Varsity

In a wealthy district, like Wayzata, Edina Minnetonka and EP, they are probably very close. In a poorer district with more reduced lunch, the MSHSL number would be lower than actual. But you keep arguing. It's clear you have some irrational dislike of suburban schools.

What seems odd to me, is that in a district like Anoka-Hennepin, where they have five high schools, that if one - in this case Blaine, is bursting at the seams, that they don't move the attendance areas more often.

Which was really good until the MSHSL botched the schedule so nobody within the section played each other

Because if you redraw the lines and send Blaine kids to Andover, the Andover parents complain. As do the Blaine parents.

Basically you have to hope you have good demographic projections when you build the school. South metro has same issue with apple valley high school. East had the same issue with park cottage grove (that is now finally growing).

I understand that the parents are going to complain, but the district has to do what's best overall.

The district is run by elected people. They literally don’t do what’s best. They do what their constituents want

The MSHSL has totally messed up football. Would be good to blow it up and start over
A lot of it had to do with teams not wanting to play the western mega schools. The Lake was down to Wayzata, Minnetonka, Hopkins, Edina and EP. They had a hard time getting out of conference games - especially EP (and some of that was a general dislike of Grant by other coaches). They literally had to go to Winnipeg to play one year.

They should have just left it as is and never created the 6A level in football.

Not sure it was the MSHSL. I think the schools and coaches pushed for more competitive balance in the regular season, so they created the Gold and Maroon divisions. It seems to have worked this year as more teams seemed to win games that hadn't in the past. That may help build success in some programs and in turn help football from losing more kids. Only 3 teams did not win a game and one was at in the Prep Bowl just two years ago (Champlin). Eagan won 3 games this year and had won 2 combined over the previous 5 years.

Correct. And then once they did it they shouldn’t build schedules to try to let some programs win at the expense of others. If 6a Is fair, their 8 game schedule should all be the 7 in section and one out of section. But they doctor the schedule so some teams can win. Meanwhile Lakeville north is probably the 11th best team in the state at 3-5
Edina is probably 12-17 range and they are 1-7.

Blow it up. Eliminate a class.
Or
If it’s fair
Just have teams play their section.

the state high school league is arguing 6a is fair for playoffs but not for regular season. Well if it is fair for one it is fair for the other. And if it’s unfair for one it’s unfair for both.
Pick a side.

With the exception of Hopkins being in the Maroon, it looks like it's basically just an East (Maroon) and West (Gold) split.

Bad teams winning games while good teams have losing record doesn’t mean the system is working.

so we are going to help Eagan, anoka, and park cottage grove at the expense of edina, Champlin park, Lakeville north? Why? Because fairness?
Why does Eagan deserve to play an easier schedule than Lakeville north? Shouldn’t they all play a consistent schedule?

in a game with no ties, every time you manipulate schedules to make someone’s easier it means by definition you are making someone else’s harder. It’s a zero sum game.

It is unfair to have brainerd play 6a schedule even though they are 6a? But it is fair to make 1-8 and 5a Sartell play 6a brainerd? Why does the MSHSL pick brainerd to win 4 and not sartell? Are those kids more deserving?
Coon rapids was so bad in 2016-17 they got to opt down a class even though they had big school enrollment. Meanwhile they ended spring lake park and andovers state title hopes by being a 5a semi finalist instead of a 6a .500 team. How is that fair to Irondale who they beat by 38 or spring lake park’s best team in years who got to 5a quarterfinal only to lose to a 6a school?

Nope. Maroon are bad teams and gold are good teams. Everyone knows it. Really speaks to what the MSHSL and coaches think of the east metro to put them all in the bad division

If anyone wants to see actual enrollments (and all kinds of other demographics) you can use this website (I pre-set it with EPHS as example, but you can search for whatever HS you want):

EPHS is 2828 students total, Wayzata is 3502, Champlin Park is 2931, Blaine is 2940.... Those are some of the big ones but other people can have fun searching for the others.
