Mike Max: ‘Auburn’s Speed Might Be A Little Bit Much’; biggest problem "self doubt about do we belong with the big boys"

I'll say this...the WCCO news folks all wore Maroon and Gold (when they were on the air) on Fridays and prior to the Outback Bowl...EXCEPT Mike Max...he would not wear Minnesota colors. He's a sniveling little moron that is jealous of the U. He HATES the Gophers. And also to add...he campaigned against the building of TCF Bank Stadium back when all that was going on.

His coverage of the Outback Bowl was awful. And ironically he traveled to New Orleans to personally cover the Vikings game.

I wouldn't give you 2 cents for that man and if I had my way...I'd blacklist from the Press list for all Gopher games.

Haha -- I think some of you are being a little hard on Mike Max. I know he does care about the team, and the concerns about Auburn's speed and do we belong with the big boys were valid concerns going into the game. You have to be very impressed with that win over Auburn for many reasons. It was the best bowl victory of any of the Big Ten teams and gives the team a lot of mojo ending the year.
No...I've personally heard him blast PJ and the Gophers. He is no friend of the U.

To be clear: I don't expect local media to cheerlead for the U of M. It's simply not their job. That said, I do think Max has a small-college and small-college athlete inferiority-complex gripe against the Division 1 school. The Gophers get all the press, and he doesn't like it, at least subconsciously. To a certain extent, I feel his pain. Did Hamline gymnastics get more than a small, hidden paragraph in the paper when they won the WIAC a couple years ago? That should have been news. But I'm not going to hold that against the U.

Was this tongue in cheek?

The whole news crew wearing team colors is quite silly, IMO. Even goofier is a "news" story about fans gathering together to watch the "big game" at Sensor's, BWW or whatever watering hole.

Absolutely not. They started off the season 0-4 and came back to have a heck of a regional meet, and I was thinking, someone should write a few words about this. We know the coaching staff, and they deserve some ink, man!

I think you nailed it. That appears to be his issue with the U. Maybe, he thought he was good enough to play baseball there and the U overlooked him? Lots of good baseball in that area (Sibley county/ Gaylord, mn). Maybe someone should ask him?

BTW Isn't it the MIAC, not WIAC?

Ha! I resemble that!

Hamline, Gustavus and Winona State compete in gymnastics in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

I am from the area, know him (although I haven't seen him in years) and his family, and always hate to see the venom directed at him here. Nice guy. Great family. He was a very good three sport high school athlete. I never felt baseball was even his best sport. He led his basketball team to the region finals where they endured a heartbreaking 2 point defeat in the game to advance to the state tourney - back in the days when there were only two classes and it took a special team to advance to state. Although I played against him a couple times, he was older (sr when I was a fr) so only a little bit.

When did he become so smug?

Sibley county? Anyway, you are correct. I've never met Mike, but I have met members of his family. Very nice humble people. With that said, I have wondered if it didn't bother Mike that some of the smaller schools/ outstate programs don't get the love they deserve.

Anyway, I get the basics from Mike Max. I just look elsewhere if I need a Gopher fix/ deep analysis

Thanks! I never knew this. I really haven't followed Hamline since the early 80's when Dick Tressel was the Football coach.

I might have seen that game they lost, but I cannot remember for sure, although I do remember seeing Mike Max up close on the court, probably after our B-9th- 10th grade game on of those years. He was a decent guard, although we saw some better back then.

Most of the guys on our team used to drive over to the see the sectional playoff games at the old Gustavus fieldhouse and I remember Gaylord was pretty good back then. That old barn was turned into a parking lot year or so after I moved on to college.

Who did Gaylord lose to at St. Peter? I remember seeing Barry Wohler and Bird Island playing there for sure. It was a great Hoosier like environment at Gustavus always for those HS games.

For sure I remember playing in the Gaylord gym later, and Mike Max was gone by then, but my recollection was that Mike Max had a slightly younger brother who also played basketball. I know a I scored 15 points, and probably had 10 rebounds in the Gaylord gym that day, but we blew a lead lost by a few.

He does seem pretty full of himself these days for sure.

Guess our Auburn buddy never had the cajones to come back. If he was that angry before the game I can’t imagine how he’s handling life now.

Do you mean the Wisconsin troll that was pretending to be from down south?

I grew up on the same block as the Max family. I got a lot of negative posts the last time I said he came from an excellent family. He has an older brother Kevin and his younger brother you mentioned is Marc. Parents moved to Hutchinson years ago . Mom was the school nurse and Dad sold insurance. He went to Hamline and probably is not a big Gopher fan. I don’t understand the need for some posters to name call somebody they have never met or had a conversation with about anything. He’s doing just fine for himself .

You mean steveable? Yeah, him and I did end up meeting at the Sonic south of RSJ after the game. He took one look at my scarred and scabbed over knuckles and mumbled something under his breath about not wanting to mess with me. He then proceeded to get back into his smart car and leave, but not before going through the drive-thru and ordering a couple lime-ades and junior banana splits for himself and his male companion in the passenger seat. Needless to say, but I don’t think he will be posting here anymore.

He was banned so technically you are correct.

Yes I know Kevin. Nice guy! Like talking to him. Small world.

Well, this is starting to sound like we may have played against each other, or at least probably had a lot of common opponents. I’ll send you a PM.

I too took in many playoff basketball games at Gustavus. The atmosphere in the old fieldhouse was always loud and electric. Slight clarification: after GAC built Lund center, the old fieldhouse was torn down and remains an open green space to this day (not a parking lot).

Gaylord lost that region game to Brooklyn Center And their high flying star, Tracy Martin.

I was between Mike and Mark in age (Marc too led his team as a senior to a region final at Gustavus, where they lost to Le Suer). I played more against Marc than I did Mike due to being a tad closer in age.
