Mike Leach suspended for Alamo Bowl

Wow - this is kind of odd timing for this to come down. MSU must be pretty pumped about this though. Not having their HC is going to be a big blow for TT.

This is a joke right.

We have reached a low point. All men please return their balls along with the attached masculinity to the nearest backbone repository.

That is bizarre. Still don't think MSU wins. Maybe now they lose by fewer than 21.

Schnoods, it is a lot easier to go my route...The hell with all of it and let's have a couple of shots of Jack Daniels. Then all will be good. :)

It appears it was Craig James'(from ESPN) son. Simply put Leach messed with the wrong guys kid it appears.

GG...Looks like another example of "it's not who you know that matters, it's who you blow that matters."

Reminds me of Percy in the movie THE GREEN MILE.

True, and add to the fact that there is no love lost between the AD and Leach and it spells problems for Leach. If what the player is claiming is true it is definitely odd behavior from a coach but Leach is definitely not the conventional guy.

I don't know where a player's masculinity comes into this. This is a concussion, not a sprained ankle. There are very few injuries as serious as a concussion, and today, most teams recognize this and follow a rigid protocol before an athlete is cleared to play after having one. The school absolutely should investigate Leach on this, even if it's only to protect themselves from a future lawsuit, but more importantly to protect an athlete from aggravating the injury in way that ruins the rest of his life.

Mike Leach

Report that head coach of Texas Tech suspended indefinitely for putting Craig James son in a closet for 3 hours following a concussion. We should reopen some recruitng, ya think?

I'd suspect Brew and Co. are working the phones as we type.

Are there any recruits Texas Tech and the Gophers were/are competing for?

Minnesota would be fortunate if Leach were available

to be our coach next year. I wouldn't judge him to harshly, relative to the way other big time coaches act behind the scenes.

Rich Neuheisel, Gary Barnett, and Mike Price are three coaches with "baggage" who all would have had us head and shoulders above the pit we are in now.

Mike Leach is a very good coach, and an interesting guy. Michigan should have hired him when they had a chance.

Minnesota would be winning big for years with Leach and our facilities.

+1 Why football coaches do such stupid things is beyond me. While what Leach did was probably not cruel, it was designed to humiliate and embarrass. Leach is an f'ing idiot. I agree that this has nothing to do with toughness or masculinity, its a kids health. I'm sure that Adam James is tougher than most anyone who questions his fortitude and toughness.

they should call this the "SUSPENDED BOWL". 8-10 players for MSU.......the head coach for texas tech. enjoy alamo blow reps. piss off!

That is totally unbelievable and inexcusable. If Mangino can get let go for what he allegedly said to players I think that Leach's days in Lubbock are numbered.

This is worse than a player having a brush with the law. We should hold coaches to higher standards than kids...the guys need to fired and taught some sensitivity! I'd never let my kid play for such a meathead

I'm guessing there are two sides to this story.

Can't say that this surprises me at all. The guy is one odd duck. If true, I'm pretty sure he will be fired. However, he wanted to stay in Lubbuck and coach and I'm not sure if others will be running there to take the job without it being a stepping stone.

This whole thing could negate a Leach buyout clause and allow TT to toss the coach for free. I think the admin and him have tangled in the past. Mountain West for Leach, a couple of turnaround years for a squad and then back to a BCS team.

Lock a kid in a closet because he won't practise, I don't care what the injury is.

Lets start the list on this one.

1.) Professionalism - Does anything more need to be said.

2.) Player development - Oh well

3.) Respect for the individual - Yeah right

4.) Leadership and Motivational Abilities - Ahhh

I am sure there are a ton of other things that could be listed. The coach and player are both adults. It's to bad only one acted that way. Give me Brewster any day.

Looks like I get to disagree with oak_street again. Leach is a good coach, but if you mean totally off the wall as "interesting," we maybe don't disagree that much. I read a glowing article by Moneyball author Michael Lewis on Leach in The New York Times Magazine a couple of years back. Lewis likes to prick the sports establishment with praise for outside-the-box thinkers, but there's nothing Leach is doing that wasn't done first by the Houston Oilers in the early days of the old AFL. Maybe Lewis should have talked to Mouse Davis and June Jones, guys who pioneered spread offenses long before Leach ever did.

Problem is, players win and systems don't. It's still all about knocking down more of their guys than they do of yours. That's been the problem at our place for the last 30 years.

That said, Leach has done a good job at Texas Tech and if he's fired, he won't be out of work long.

I read the article and it seems to me that Leach is a sadist. I think he'll have trouble recruiting down the road.

Before we hang him, let's let the facts get out. If true, it will take care of itself. If not true, how does Leach recover?

It was obvious last night that James the Sr. was getting the benefit of the doubt from ESPN. There is a conflict of interest in this story and if it ends up being nothing, does ESPN fire James?

At the end of the day, after Mangino (sniff, he said mean things about me -- which they couldn't prove or he would have been outright fired vs. getting bought out) and now this, every single program is in trouble if one disgruntled player gets an audience and decides to make an issue of some slight -- real, perceived or otherwise and this is not good for college football.

That being said, neither is ignoring a significant injury which concussions certainly fall under -- but before we hold trial and vilify anyone on the board, perhaps having input from both sides will be good.

Making sure the truth is known is why there should be an investigation. Texas Tech is doing this and it will either exonerate Leach, or the player and his family.

The other good move is that ESPN's James was scheduled to work the Alamo Bowl, but because of the controversy will not be there.

to be our coach next year.

This quote is a great example or the type of "fans" that are just so-blindly negative they still can't see the truth when it slaps them upside the head and spits in their face.

Minnesota could have had Leach, but went a different direction -- and our fanbase has given the AD all sorts of hell for hiring a coach "without experience". But this shows (if true) what the problem is with some of these head coaches who come up with great gameday plans. Many are just not fit to be CEOs. And that's why they are willing to leave and the schools they coach at are so excited to let them go.

The Minnesota media has made every attempt to dig up dirt on Brewster and has come up laughably empty-handed. By all accounts, the players absolutely love him. And if you look at records and scores vs. the schedule it is very hard to deny that he is making progress. And at this point, the Brewster-bashers may as well be pissing into the wind. He's getting an extension, and he is our coach indefinitely.

A couple of things:

1. Can you imagine the heat the media here would be giving Brewster if these allegations were about him? And there are some on here who are defending Leach? What if it were Brewster??? Hell, there's 2 pages of posts about Brewster "not liking" Ned Tavale....., what would happen if it was alleged he locked him in a closet?

2. How quickly is this James kid going to be able to get out of Lubbock? Can you imagine the backlash that this kids is going to have to put up with? He got the coach suspended for the bowl game!!!! With some of the football-crazy fans in Texas, I'd be a little concerned for the kid's safety. He's also probably not going to be welcomed with open arms from any coach where he might want to transfer to....

Maybe he sent James in the closet with one of the "fat little girlfriends" to play some 7 minutes in heaven? Maybe he is another one of those "gimmick" coaches? You know the ones, the guy who throws crap against the wall and screams, "that's what you guys are, nothing but crap..." Whatever the case may be, Leach is an idiot for doing it.
