Michigan State football, men's basketball players to receive $500 monthly stipend

Really? You can't see how this will change the landscape of the college game? Do you think Holloman was told during recruiting that this was in the pipeline? Perhaps that solidified where he felt he should go? Do you think the Gophers will get a company to sign up to do this, or something like this? Like someone mentioned, we can't get donors to pay for the facility upgrades.

You know, either you see it or you don't. I'm not going to spend time attempting to explain how this changes the landscape of things particularly for teams which will not have big end donors... I don't think anyone really knows how this will play out... GopherPlaya... maybe you are a former player and really like this since you missed out(?) I don't know but seems like this will be a very big deal going forward and our local team will need to have someone, or companies step forward in a very big way.

Might happen, might not happen; when you say how is this any different due to 'parity', your parity, IMHO, will now take a major swing towards those who are willing to pay the most. Kansas, Arizona, LSU (and MANY others) were willing to do this under the table. Now they don't have to do it under the table any longer...
$500 a month is just the opening bid. Next one needs to go higher.

So if they were already doing it under table how is it any different? Top players have gone to schools like Duke, Kansas, & Kentucky forever. So what changes? You mentioned facilities well schools with the biggest donors already have that competitive advantage. People assume there is purity in college sports but elite programs have done this forever & it was just under the table
Difference is not just elite players get paid. Elite players will also continue to get under table premium pay.

Since the CFP started Alabama, Ohio State or Clemson has participated every year. There isnt any parity in college sports. We got to stop actin like the teams who will benefit from this werent already benefiting from unfair advantages. We are being naive if we think otherwise. Also, Duke & Kentucky has had a top 3-5 recruiting class every year over the past 10. Like I said before nothing will change but athletes getting money. The schools with big donors were already pullling in top 5 level recruiting classes
It is a lot more than schools with wealthiest donors. That would be Notre Dame and Stanford. The school has to be willing to do. Minnesota was not, especilaly after getting caught helping a kid with a paper

It was a great deal more than one kid and one paper.

You are so correct. Let's never forget that Clem was also nailed for giving a kid at the end of the bench, who would never help him win a game, $300 out of his own pocket so he could fly to his grandmother's funeral. How could we ever let such an awful man anywhere near our scholar athletes?

Also fun to remember that around the same time Tractor Traylor was asked by an Ann Arbor reporter where he got his $40,000 car. Tractor said his grandma gave it to him. The enterprising reporter than checked out granny and found that she had been on welfare her entire adult life.

Despite these published reports the NCAA showed no interest. No doubt the 125 crack lawyers working there were all exhausted from the brilliant and courageous takedown of Clem Haskins.

Clem sending a kid home for a funeral should never have been a violation no doubt but if you think that is all there was i can not help you. Your free to think whatever you want. If you think cheating is ok since others cheat that is your right.
