A United Wholesale Mortgage spokesperson updated the release, stating that football and men's basketball players will be paid year-round, not just in season.

United Wholesale Mortgage is putting the "green" in the green and white.

The company, a top wholesale mortgage lender over the past half-decade, announced via news release Wednesday that it will sponsor all 133 MSU men's basketball and football players for the upcoming school year.

Each student-athlete will be paid $500 per month through funds provided by Ishbia and UWM.

Ishbia donated a record $32 million to MSU athletics in February, but the stipends are a "separate" effort, according to the release.

Go Gophers!!

Go Gophers!!
3M or Target gonna step up, let's go!

While I recognize that college football wasn't "fair" before, this NIL stuff is really going to shake things up. Best team = team with richest donors.
It's great for the players, but terrible for the sport/fans.

We still haven't paid our practice facilities off, what makes you think there are big donors out there for the Gophers?
I thought the absurdity of my statement was enough to let all those know I was not being serious. It was a sarcastic rallying cry for the local mega corps, since it is apparent our current corporate donor base is dwindling.

Gotcha

Go Gophers!!
For the football and basketball teams, my Minnesota math says its ~$588,000 per year in stipends

I just don't understand the folks who think paying college athletes is a good thing. This is where all these donors/supporters play a huge role and the schools with the most billionaire's win in the end. It's really that simple when the dust settles. At least that is how I see it and this, IMHO, completely ruins what watching college sports does for me. The integrity (not that there was allot in the first place, but you'd like to think there was) will be rubbed off and out of ALL college programs, just a matter of time... if they had any, AND the SEC will dominate in the end due to this rule.

Enjoy sports for now, but watch as this is just the first step in the big change. There is obviously money in the B1G as well but it will get outrageous in SEC country. I could be completely wrong, we'll see!

add the florida panthers nhl team offering endorsement deals with all female athletes at FAU

wondering when ballmer might offer $1M/yr endorsement deals for top recruits to play for harvard.

PJ needs to make quick friends with Bezos and Gates. And maybe a Saudi prince.

Sorry but this is shady as all get out, those MSU athletes going to be splashed all over East Lansing Tv stations, billboards, brochures for these companies etc. Use us for your mortgage cause these athletes get money from us. What a farce.

What are Nike and Under Armor going to do next... maybe just bring things above the table now probably.

How is that any different than the current landscape? Look at the CFP same teams every year. Basketball will still have parity because it’s still a single game elimination

Really? You can't see how this will change the landscape of the college game? Do you think Holloman was told during recruiting that this was in the pipeline? Perhaps that solidified where he felt he should go? Do you think the Gophers will get a company to sign up to do this, or something like this? Like someone mentioned, we can't get donors to pay for the facility upgrades.

You know, either you see it or you don't. I'm not going to spend time attempting to explain how this changes the landscape of things particularly for teams which will not have big end donors... I don't think anyone really knows how this will play out... GopherPlaya... maybe you are a former player and really like this since you missed out(?) I don't know but seems like this will be a very big deal going forward and our local team will need to have someone, or companies step forward in a very big way.

Might happen, might not happen; when you say how is this any different due to 'parity', your parity, IMHO, will now take a major swing towards those who are willing to pay the most. Kansas, Arizona, LSU (and MANY others) were willing to do this under the table. Now they don't have to do it under the table any longer...

i think what gopher playa is saying is that msu was getting tre over teams like us before, they'll continue to do so. there are only so many scholarships available. msu with stipends is still competing with duke with stipends. now, if programs like northern iowa and north dakota get more stipend money and start getting players over minnesota then it's an issue, but if the rich stay rich, it doesn't change the landscape at all.

Okay, so I got a company with enough money to pay out the calculated $588,000.
I’m publicly announcing my contribution.
Did I just eliminate half to greater of my customer base?? Women won’t notice? Won’t feel discriminated against? Won’t be ticked off? At least pick up volleyball and basketball for the women too! Take out a loan big spender, if you have to but don’t be that dumb!

Twenty posts in and no one's taken the low hanging fruit? Sigh, alright, I'll do it for the team:

"$500 a month? What did the players do to warrant the pay cut?"

Thank you, thank you, drive home safely and make sure to tip the wait staff.

Maybe you should stop being a fan.
This is a bullshit response and you know it. Getting your tuition, housing and food paid for to play a college sport is more than enough compensation for an athlete.

Colleges use scholarships on players they believe will help drive revenue and most never raise a $1.00 in profit for the school. If you enjoy any resemblance of parity, you won’t enjoy what’s coming next.

Exactly we are overreacting to $500 extra & it’s been proving over time that elite athletes get paid anyway

So if they were already doing it under table how is it any different? Top players have gone to schools like Duke, Kansas, & Kentucky forever. So what changes? You mentioned facilities well schools with the biggest donors already have that competitive advantage. People assume there is purity in college sports but elite programs have done this forever & it was just under the table

The landscape is changing and soon public education for college will be close to free. These NIL dollars might be the new ‘scholarship’. For those of us who participated or have family members with full scholarships - we know of those days where you get up and think ‘this scholarship is not worth it’. NIL could be that boost that makes effort and talent more special.

Parity? LMAO!

Time to step away from the keyboard.

There's probably a lot more free publicity in sponsoring the stipends than being one of 200 donors to the facility.

Why the heck wouldn’t they pay all players the same amount and be done with it. Stupid they don’t have a cap on it. It’s an unfair advantage.

Since the CFP started Alabama, Ohio State or Clemson has participated every year. There isnt any parity in college sports. We got to stop actin like the teams who will benefit from this werent already benefiting from unfair advantages. We are being naive if we think otherwise. Also, Duke & Kentucky has had a top 3-5 recruiting class every year over the past 10. Like I said before nothing will change but athletes getting money. The schools with big donors were already pullling in top 5 level recruiting classes

I made more than $500 a week when I was 11 caddying at Interlachen
