I am far from the first or second or third person to cite Chris Meidt's name, but did hear this morning that the steam following him is very legit ... if hiring someone from the Zorn's staff in Washington, why not just make a run at Zorn (may not have his degree though ... anyone know for sure?) ???

Because Zorn was an NFL head coach and maybe deosn't want to be a college coordinator?

$$ doesn't seem to be an issue...Fisch, who had never called plays before, was given a two-year, approx. $600,000 deal, with a bonus built-in...in addition, I presume Zorn got a nice buyout from the Redskins.

This is the answer I bet. That being said, it was probably worth a call ... no idea if Brewster reached out to him.

It has been cited on here, many times, that he does indeed have his degree.

The better question is, why would somebody want to go from NFL head coach to Big Ten OC?

It would be nothing less than a tacit admission that he was in way over his head, and would kill any chances he would ever have in the league again.

Plus he is already getting pizzaid.

Just a hunch, but I have a feeling the NFL wore him out. But you're probably right ... he'll end up on someone's staff as an offensive assistant/assistant head coach.

Wasn't he in over his head from the start? If I remember right, he was the OC and they couldn't get anyone else to take the HC job.

Wouldn't it be nice to be talking about a guy that wants to be here more than 2 years? IMHO I doubt if Zorn wants to leave the NFL in the way he did. My suspicion would be that eventually he wants to get back and prove to people that he was more than capable of leading an NFL team.

I find it interesting that people say he, Zorn, was in way over his head. What are people going by other than what had happened in Washingon when 1) we don't know the dynamics as to what was happening in the open and behind the scenes and 2) working for an owner who has done some crazy things in my mind is not a real normal situation that we can use as a barometer?

As I have said in the other Meidt related threads... I would be very, very, very happy to see him as the next Gopher OC.

Why would Brewster hire an OC that has a resume that overshadows his own? It won't happen. Why would he hire Chris Meidt?
1. Brewster only hires intense people. Meidt is that so check.
2. Brewster wants a coordinator with NFL experience. Meidt has that so check.
3. Brewster needs someone who would stay around for a few years. Meidt's from MN, has his MBA from the U, so the potential is good.
4. Brewster wants to keep the same offense. Meidt's background with both the Pro Set and Spread might be unique.

Can someone check to see what color smoke is coming out the chimney at Bierman?

Most coaches, by definition are intense. Agree on Nos. 3 and 4 ... on No. 2, being a quality control assistant at the NFL level doesn't mean a ton.

Am I on something or

Wasn't Zorn on Mason's staff at one point. And the thing Meidt has over Zorn is abilty to recruit.

Meidt

I'll say this about Meidt. He has excellent genes (his father has an exceptional football mind as well), and he was well in the process of making Olaf relevant in the MIAC before he left for D.C. When it comes to football, Olaf was about as medicore and boring as D-III football could be, but Meidt quickly changed that. His teams could produce points and they were fun to watch.

Whether that would translate to the Big 10, who knows, but as others have noted he'd likely be a good fit. With his Minnesota background maybe he's not as quick to jump at the next opportunity, especially after the short stint in Washington?

Doogie, you need to do some research on Coach Meidt, he was far more than a quality control assistant. He was the QB coach and even was involved in calling plays at the end of the season. He's the primary reason that Jason Campbell developed into a servicable NFL QB.

5. Brewster has a penchant for underqualified offensive coordinators. Check.

Doogie, type Chris Meidt into news.google.com this will help with your research into his background. Meidt was esentially the QB coach a position our last coach both came from and went to.

Do we really want someone who tutored Jason Campbell on staff??? Jason Campbell.....think about that.

Your quote either indicates that Meidt harmed Jason Cambell's ability to play qb or that Jason Cambell harmed Meidt's ability to coach. Please clarify.

So many inaccuracies in this thread...must...resist...urge...to be....pedantic...

His actual title was Offensive Assistant (hopefully no pun indented). Here is a link to an interview where he describes his duties: http://blog.redskins.com/2009/05/15/meeting-the-coaches-chris-meidt/.

It looks like the Redskins retained Zorn's offensive QC guy (http://www.redskins.com/gen/coaches/Bill__Khayat.jsp). In another article, Meidt talks about being replaced by Matt LaFleur (who is titled Quarterbacks Coach). Anyone know if Zorn had a Quarterback Coach per se?

Sorry gg05, but Campbell got better during the years that Meidt was there. It's not his fault that Dan Snyder saddled him with JC.

I don't understand how anyone can be critical with the potential hire of Meidt.

How about you wait and see how the guy does first.

Honestly, the most important components IMO is having someone that won't bolt after 1 year and someone that can run a pro-style offense. Meidt seems like a legit candidate with college and NFL experience.

Be critical if you must after we see him in action. As for now, shut up.

So you care more about whether the guy will stay than whether or not he'll be any good?

And we wonder why it's been 42 years...
