I'd say if the Gophers lose to UCLA it will be a long season.
The Gophers are not going undefeated this season but they certainly as hell are not losing to UCLA. The whole vibe around Gopher football is different this year...so many people are looking forward to this season and everyone has a lot of realistic optimism.

I bet that Fleck will have this game circled with all the noise about Fleck + UCLA this year.

Also, this is a UCLA team with a first time head coach that just lost Chip Kelly who runs a very unique set of systems. I just cannot imagine that they’re going to be world beaters this year but who knows.

They do have a new coach, but they also did win 8 games last year and it’s on the road. Not sure how we can consider this game a cake walk after getting housed by Purdue last year.

Sorry, yeah to be clear. My 'System II' thought is that the Gophers will lose: https://gopherhole.com/boards/threads/sp-implied-lines-2024-minnesota.114950/#post-2941017

My 'System I' thought is that Athan Kaliakmanis was most of the problem with the Gopher offense last year and trying to transition away from Chip Kelly's offense is going to be very painful.

Just my gut feeling, I'll take the gophers in this one. They play LSU on the road, Oregon at home, then travel to Penn St. the three weeks before hosting the gophers, I suspect they will be pretty beaten up by the time Minnesota comes to town.

I'd say the Gophers' big test is beating UCLA.

It is going to take getting used to the new Big Ten. The Gophers will adapt.

IMHO, it opens Gopher recruiting opportunities on the West Coast. We have a 2025 CA commit in Jackson Kollock from Laguna Beach. That is a start.

Hopefully, more CA athletes will start picking the Big Ten over the SEC. The big elephant in the room is the NIL money.

They already are picking up the Calif talent, USC, UCLA, Wash and Oregon all probably have between 30-50 athletes from Calif... :)

Beaten up in terms of losing confidence by losing games, or beaten up as in injured? I do not have data to support this but it seems several Gophers have been injured in non-conference games by lesser competition (Middle Tennessee, etc).

Physically worn out... Lots of banged up players trying to play through injuries. That's what I mean. Plus, the mental of probably being on a three game losing streak.

Bumping thread with new predictions

The Daily Gopher (SB Nation) has Minnesota winning 27-14
The Bruins are bad, but do not be surprised if this is a tight game in the first half. I do think the Gophers will be able to pull away eventually and build some positive momentum heading into their first bye week of the season.

Picks and Parlays is picking Minnesota, 23-7
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are the much better team in this matchup and have the number one ranked defense against the pass which will give UCLA trouble scoring because they are already having a hard time running the ball against opponents.

Minnesota quarterback Max Brosmer will have a good performance against UCLA and will score enough points to cover the spread and win the game.

Dimers is going with Minnesota, 22-19
Our famous predictive model currently gives Minnesota a 62% chance of defeating UCLA.

Sports Chat Place is going with Minnesota in the match up
I’ll stay with Minnesota. The Gophers defense stood tall against a great USC team over the weekend despite giving up 22 first downs and 7-of-11 on third-down tries. Minnesota came up with three takeaways on the Trojans offense—and USC’s eight penalties didn’t hurt, either. It was a nice bounce-back after a close road loss to Michigan on September 28.

[Edit] Didn't realize this post was from late May. But I'll leave this up to bring the rankings up to date.

Wrong on both counts.

UCLA at 82: https://collegefootballnews.com/col...-7-teams-76-100-florida-state-tcu-purdue-2024

Minnesota at 41: https://collegefootballnews.com/col...7-teams-26-50-nebraska-michigan-colorado-2024

UCLA Total Defense is ranked 94th, Gophs 6th. UCLA Scoring Defense ranked 99th (tie), Gophs 16th. UCLA Scoring Offense ranked 130th, Gophs 91st. UCLA is averaging 14 points per game, so I'm wondering how they score 31 on this Gophs defense...

Much better predictions, but I still think Gophs score more than 30. UCLAs pass defense is horrible.

Go Gophers!!
I thought we played UCLA back in the 80's. I was certain of it. Troy Aikman barely beating us....Well, I was wrong. Aikman transferred from UCLA to Oklahoma. 13-7 in 1985 and then 63-0 in 1986.

UCLA Total Defense is ranked 94th, Gophs 6th. UCLA Scoring Defense ranked 99th (tie), Gophs 16th. UCLA Scoring Offense ranked 130th, Gophs 91st. UCLA is averaging 14 points per game, so I'm wondering how they score 31 on this Gophs defense...
Yeah, I was just thinking this could be shutout number 3.

College Football News is predicting a 23-17 Minnesota victory
Minnesota leads the nation in pass defense, but that’s because the teams with a decent attack - Michigan and USC - ran. UCLA can’t do that.

The Bruins have yet to hit the 100-yard mark, but that’s partly because it hasn’t had time to commit to the grind. They have yet to run 30 carries, and that’s almost everything here.

When it comes to that 0-3 stat for Minnesota when the run D allowed 100 yards, those were the three times the other side ran at least 40 times.

UCLA won’t run 40 times.
