Maxx to announce at 4 today (Updated-1 PM)

This begs the question. Why was he redshirted?

Alternatively, could be that his development both in terms of speed, and effectiveness were because he red shirted not despite. However, that is not a value judgement on your question.

Maybe more players should be red-shirted, since the formula seemed to work so well in Maxx's case.

This begs the question. Why was he redshirted?

Kill said a number of times last year that Maxx would've played as a true frosh but got hurt and wasn't healthy in time for them to justify pulling his RS

Congrats to Maxx, hopefully he gets drafted by a team that utilizes TEs well. Maxx is a special player, and should have a nice career.

Next man up!

Another reason why I'm not concerned about "burning" redshirts. Let the best guys play now. If they turn out to be really good, they will likely be gone after 4 years anyway.

The downside of that is that it hurts your depth and sometimes guys that would be huge helps as 5th year seniors are gone after 4 because they played spot duty as frosh. For every Eric Murray that will be a 3 year starter you have guys like Wells and Thompson that barely played their 1st years and would be great to have back or Cobb who barely played too.

We cooled on him.

Congrats Maxx, can't fault you for this decision. Thanks for the hard work, representing us well on the field and in the classroom. Best of luck at the NFL, you've earned it.

Good luck to Maxx, on the upside, I will find the offseason and future NFL games a bit more interesting now with another former Gopher on a roster.

Will never forget that sideline catch and that TD yesterday - two of the greatest plays I have ever seen at any level in any sport.

So much for "student athletes." What if Giel or Bruce Smith or Leo Nomellini or Tyrone Carter had left after sophomore year. You can bet his father had a lot to do with this.

Thanks for the memories, Maxx! Will miss seeing you in maroon and gold next year. Hope you tear it up in the NFL.

Word from a couple of weeks back is his draft grade came in as first round. It's been a pleasure he was a once in a generation or more type player who should thrive in the NFL v

He probably didn't like Limegrover throwing to him 3 times a game

This begs the question. Why was he redshirted?

Same reason he needs one more year before the NFL. Be a better blocker and develop a more mature body. The kid is very talented and one of the best tight ends I have ever seen. Sorry to see him leave.

He is considered one of the better blockers for TEs in this draft. And thats not why he redshirted either.

Sucks.....but he was a great player for us. He'll be drafted highly and remembered as one of the greatest Gophers of the past 25 years. Silver lining.....draft exposure and sunday exposure. When he makes plays like he did for the Gophers in an NFL uniform.......it will be noted as to where he came from.

Best of luck to you.....Maxx. Continue to make us proud at the next level.

It was his redshirt sophomore year- he likely has completed or is near to completing his degree. What else do u want him to accomplish before moving on?

He is a very good player, but once in a generation?

Not that you feel this way, but to some its like he was the 2nd coming of Christ or something. IMO, its great to have things like this happening to the program. The better you get the more players leave early, but you re-load with more talented new comers.

max played QB in high school and needed to put weight and muscle on so he was redshirted and he bulked way up ! He was not injured !

This is the correct response. He was maybe 220 when he hit campus.

As for the idiotic redshirt discussion, I would take the situation of wishing a player would stay an extra year (or two) ten times out of ten as opposed to lamenting the loss of a player who should be here one more year but can't (like David Cobb).

I got the same feeling from watching Maxx that I did watching Maroney his frosh and soph years. Blew my socks off. That's just how I saw it.

Wow, as high as Top 15! Per RotoWorld:

We're excited about this one. Listed at 6-foot-4, 250, Williams racked up 36 catches for 569 yards and eight touchdowns as a 20-year-old redshirt sophomore in 2014. He was the Gophers' leading receiver in every category by a significant margin. Williams won't turn 21 until just before the 2015 draft, and looks like a future difference maker as a pass-catching tight end. We suspect Williams' "stock" will rise throughout the winter and early spring and he'll end up being drafted as high as the top 15.

Go Gophers!!

We will miss you Maxx. Thanks for all the great plays the past two years. Best of luck. Come support the team down the road like Decker did this week.

Just realized that the gophers will now have 3 TEs in the NFL next year and 4 since 2009.

We sure will miss him, but looks like a good decision:

Either way, he hadn't been recruited heavily at that point. If he was a big time recruit, he would have had tons of offers by then.

I was just trying to make the point that he may have just developed very quickly, that is all.

A lot of big-time recruits don't have a ton of offers by February of their junior year.
