PJ Hill
At this point, the recruitment of Maverick seems to mirror what Thad Matta did when he brought PJ Hill to Ohio State about three years ago. Remember that scenario? No one knew why Thad, the master recruiter, was bringing in an unknown/underrecruited point guard, who was only known in Minnesota basketball circles. Basically Thad was thin in the backcourt and he needed insurance; Hill was nothing spectacular for the Buckeyes, but did provide another ball handler, insurance for foul trouble, etc. With the uncertainty with Nolen, the likelihood of Cobbs transferring, I'm guessing that Maverick's being brought on in much the same manner as PJ Hill was.
Hopefully Maverick develops into a success story such as Steve Kerr or Jared Dudley (my personal favorite recruiting story), but if he merely provides another option to bring the ball up the court if Nolen/Joseph/Hoffarber are injured/ineligible/etc., that's good enough from my perspective.
