Sorry to start a new thread. I'm overwhelmed, was on the road all day, and I have an entire page of threads to catch up on. Didn't know which thread I could of added this too. Myron just tweeted this:

Maturi on White: "... new information does not alter White’s status with the program."

Which is what most of us rational people thought. As I've said a million times, I don't think the public has any clue about the whole Royce situation. He would not have sat out this long for a laptop issue if that's all it was. So, as poorly as the UMPD handled things, there are other issues.

GL, that is why whenever there are discussions and opinions and flat out gossip about things we actually know nothing about, I would rather be silent and be thought a fool than speak out and remove all doubt.

I do have opinions on several things, and right now I am of the opinion that I am going to have a good cold beer and start preparing for the storm that is coming up here this weekend.

Go Gophers!

GLady,

Your threads are always a welcome relief.

:)

Thank you! :) I just never got all the angry posters that were blaming everything and everyone under the sun. Do I want Royce to play? YES! Do I want him to play if Tubby doesn't think he's got his stuff together? No.

I almost share that mindset. After this week - I'm having a glass of red wine to warm up...and hoping to catch a little nap before the evening begins. Good luck with the storm!

Royce's status has already been altered, Maturi should of said his status as to playing hasn't changed.

I think if there we're new issues, we would of heard about them already or at least the Bucky board would of run with them by now since they have become the moral authority of the BT.

Just my personal opinion, but I think they don't want to put Royce on the court too early and risk having him do something that could lead to more headlines and bad pub, something as simply as a Technical foul until they are convinced he has matured and can control himself on the court. They also know Royce is going to deal with fan chants and comments and they want to be sure he is better prepared to handle that, not like the Oregon RB. Despite what Badger fans would have you believe(and WOW are the fans on the Scout board just pathetic), Royce is not a bad kid, stupid and immature most definately, but not a kid worth throwing away just yet. Tubby is 100 times the man any of those posters on the Bucky board are and this garbage that he is win at all costs is just pure BS. You can believe it or not, but I really believe Tubby views Royce as one of the reasons he got into coaching, a chance to try to save and help a very talented kid who is in danger of throwing his life away. Obviously wins and loses and BT titles and NCAA appearences are very important to all coaches and Tubby is no exception, but Bo Ryan doesn't have a patent on good coaches who also are good people who do things for there kids to help better them in life.

You know what this means? it means that royce has not had a trial yet. once the trial goes through and he leaves without jailtime he'll be back with the team. if maturi stupidly holds out after that then he either needs to fess up about what other extenuating circumstances there are or just let him freaking play

I agree completely. Well said.

I'm behind Tubby and will remain there

Through 2+ seasons and all of the off-court issues this basketball season, I continue to be amazed by Tubby. He wants to win and has won. He has high expectations for his student-athletes and holds them accountable. And despite all we read here and elsewhere, from the "kick anyone who curses off the team" to "who cares what the guys do off the court so long as they can shoot the ball", Tubby answers questions with steadfast integrity and commitment -- to the university, his players, the community, and to winning basketball.

The Gophers basketball program is in good hands and will win. I for one am behind Coach Smith.

Beat those Spartans tomorrow!!!

Just a little reminder...

This from this fall, October, 2009
Tubby Smith's father dies
Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith's father, Guffrie Smith Sr., died Sunday night. The former Maryland sharecropper raised 17 children with his wife, Parthenia.

Guffrie Smith Sr. was awarded a Purple Heart in World War II as a machine gunner after he was wounded. He was a school bus driver in St. Mary's County (Md.) for nearly five decades.
Anyone who has lost a parent knows how the death of a parent brings into focus priorities. Anyone who doesn't recognise that Tubby has a deep commitment to mentoring - fathering - every young man who enters his program is suffering under the delusion that winning is everything.

Tubby said he came to Minnesota because this is a place where he could "do it the right way".
If you want win at all costs, there are plenty of programs you can follow.

Thanks for your post, Johnny.

Tubby had a difficult but successful path through 4 years with Gerald Fitch at UK. He stuck by GF when it would have been easier to toss him under the bus. He didn't.

And Gerald now earns a good $ living playing basketball overseas because Tubby mentored him.

No, it does not. There will be no trial and there will be no jail time. We already know that.

Just my personal opinion, but I think they don't want to put Royce on the court too early and risk having him do something that could lead to more headlines and bad pub, something as simply as a Technical foul until they are convinced he has matured and can control himself on the court. I disagree. They aren't worried about Royce 'getting a technical foul' or acting like a wild animal on the court. While I know Tubby enjoys helping kids, Royce is far beyond what he would like to be dealing with. He took a calculated risk and so far, it has not been a good decision.

I really don't get why everyone is 'celebrating' that there are now charges against White related to this matter. The fact that he didn't get charged with anything more serious than trespass misdemeanors is good compared to what could have resulted, but there's a much more favorable outcome that could have occurred and did not -- i.e., "no charges will be filed". That wasn't the result.

I have never seen criminal charges being filed against a person seen as such a great thing for that person and their school before. Never has the administration said that, "well, once charges are filed if any, and the results of the court system are finalized, then we'll have Royce playing ball".

At any rate, the charges look like b.s. and from a criminal justice point of view, Royce will be fine. But, the idea that this somehow compels the U to allow the young man onto the court in their uniform is bizarre.
