Marcus tweet: "good chance" two scholarships open up

I'm confused - So can the U or Tubby just take away the scholarship if they wanted? Can they just say "Hey really sorry Mav, but we want Lockett here so you're really going to need to transfer".

I think it would be more like "Your minutes are likely going to be very low next season. If you are okay with that great, but if not I can help you find a school that might offer you more playing time. The decision is up to you."

Hurt recruiting?

Yes, but it can really hurt recruiting. Scholarships are only a one year contract.

Sure, if it happens all the time. But no it would not "really hurt recruiting".

GophersOnTheRise is right, players transfer all the time, players are encouraged to transfer if they are unhappy with their roll and think they are better than they are. Those players can hurt a team, accept your roll or move on.

And we've already had a lot of transfers. If players continue to transfer out of the program, future recruits will take notice, or competing coaches will point it out. I'm all for getting Lockett, but we need to minimize the amount of players transferring out.

If we cut Joe, I would love to be the next one to go on a recruiting call to Hopkins. Once the media picks up we are cutting kids, I bet the local talent in the class of 2014 moves the Gophers right to the top of the list.

Clueless.

If Trevor elects to play a sixth year and the ncaa does not award the U a 14th scholarship; one player will transfer.

14th scholarship? Is there some sort of precedent for this? I know Tubby mentioned something about "getting some help from the NCAA" but I thought that was more wishful thinking and coach-speak. I have never heard of the NCAA doing this.

Someone said they were going to check the by-laws, but IDK what they found.

I don't see us being able to use a 14th scholarship waiver AND being able to take on Lockett. If we get a waiver for a 14th scholarship and someone transfers to theoretically open up a free scholarship for Lockett, I think the NCAA would revoke the 14th scholarship and make us use the scholarship opening on Trevor. So if we want Lockett I bet we'll need two players to transfer out.

I think it was brought up just a little while ago that Nebraska was able to do this one year. There was a weird eligibility situation with a foreign player there, and they were able to have 14 players on scholarship by agreeing to redshirt someone. I think that's how it went down in a nutshell.

+1

The waiver will be last resort.

If the two that are transfering are Ahamisi and Welch they would have to bring in a PG.

That is not very likely, but if it happens ... Yikes. I hope Andre works on his conditioning. He will be playing 60 minutes a game.

Are you anticipating a lot of quadruple OT games next year?

What makes you say that it would not hurt recruiting.

It obviously would be something that opposing coaches would bring up all the time. It's common sense.

Players transfer all of the time and often their transfer might even be suggested, but to act like those players should all just move on and accept the fact is a farse. They were asked to come to the U of MN to play basketball on the promise that they would graduate. I highly doubt that Tubby sits down and explains to them that if they really like a player in 3 years, that there is a possibility that they will "pull their scholarship". Essentially, if Tubby forces a kid out, he lied to them. That will obviously hurt recruiting.

Welch can't transfer. He'd be out of eligibility since he redshirted at UC Davis.

Kevin Payton got cut because he was awful, you guys. Remember?

I put the chances of us getting a 14th scholarship at 2%.
