"RT @GophersNow: Good chance. RT @MattDGoldfine @GophersNow @DarrenWolfson any chance 2 scholarships open up for Lockett and Mbakwe?"

Go Gophers!!

Who would it be, do you think? I'd have to think that between Mav, Chip, and Ingram, it'd be two of those three.

With Mo, Trevor, and EE, Ingram might not have much playing time next year, so his would probably make the most sense of anyone. But I'm thinking Mav. I hope Chip stays though. What about Oto? Any scuttlebutt on him?

Oto already sat out a year here, I think he would be sacrificing a year (maybe two years?) of eligibility if he were to transfer. I remember there was something with him coming here that sitting out the 2010-11 season he lost a year of eligibility, but he could, and almost assuredly would, earn back that lost year.

I can't see any reason why Oto would leave. Already lost a year, he's 20 or 21, and he actually saw consistent playing time.

Mav and Chip seem like the most logical because both have a redshirt year to burn for their transfer, both have 2 years of eligibility remaining, neither is from Minnesota so this isn't their "home", and both saw their minutes decrease as the year ended yet none of the players that took their minutes is likely leaving the program next year.. That profile makes them "ideal" candidates to transfer. By "ideal", I mean if I could draw up a profile of a player that ends up transferring, it's that profile.

I could see Mo transfer. Kind of fits that profile as well if he were granted a redshirt year for his transfer year. However, does the big guy want to sit 2 straight years? Not nearly as likely as Mav and Chip as a result

Oto? Doesn't have a redshirt to burn but also kind of fits the profile, though I think he likes it here and he sees an opportunity to grow into a 3 pt specialist. I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers but again, not as likely as Mav and Chip.

Coleman? Some have speculated as a possibility but I don't see it. He's from here and he gets minutes. He would be the exception to the rule if he ends up transferring.

Ingram? I actually think it's less likely than any of the players I mentioned above. It's rare for someone to transfer and sit out a year with only 1 year remaining. I know Colton and Devoe did but that's why it was so strange to see. Ingram is from here, saw his minutes and confidence increase as the year went along, and has only 1 year of eligibility remaining.

Others: EE? Not likely. Dre? Better not. Austin Hollins? Better not par 2. Rodney? Nope. Welsh? He's been a nomad (UC-Davis ->JUCO->Minnesota) so you never know but again unlikely because he'll be a senior.

Ranking the likelihood:
1. Chip
2. Mav
----------------------big gap-----------------------------
3. Oto
4. Mo
5. Coleman - please don't!!!
6. Welsh
7. Ingram
8. EE
9. Austin Hollins
10. Dre
11. Rodney
(Ellenson and Buggs make up the other 2 schollys).

If Mo transfers he won't get a redshirt because this year was his redshirt year.

Coleman is quoted as saying he expects everyone back so if this happens things have changed considerably since the article last week.

“@GophersNow: There are rumblings. Can't speculate on names. RT @BobUsselman Separate from Mbakwe/Lockett talk, any rumblings about Gophs transferring?”

I bet one of those is the rumor about Coleman transferring, even though Coleman said he expects everyone back

Mo could've been upset about being held out another year by Tubby. I recall that he said it wasn't his decision whether to play this year or not.

I hope Joe stays, but he had his minutes and even started. If he doesn't have a jump shot, that'll follow him no matter where he goes. However, Joe, IIRC, wasn't exactly hot on the U to begin with. I remember hearing stories about him maybe committing to go elsewhere, so that makes me think he may quick to run off if he's even remotely unhappy about something or someone. We'll see I guess. It's all guess work.

Agree that Chip and Mav are by far the most likely. Only transfer that could keep us out of the dance is Dre, and that is highly unlikely. With the team Tubby has built we can survive a windstorm, I can't imagine another tornado.

"It's all guess work. "

KyGF, I would guess that your are absolutely correct.

I don't think anyone knows anything at this point. We will start to hear some real speculation when Tubby gets home from New Orleans.

If Trevor elects to play a sixth year and the ncaa does not award the U a 14th scholarship; one player will transfer.

If Lockett elects to play at the U; another player will transfer.

I remember Pam Borton once saying, I will never have another team with "too much" talent.I wonder if Lockett and Mbakwe plus all the other guys coming back aren't damn near "too much" talent. How do the minutes work out? Does Lockett start? If so, I guess he bumps Welch.

EE and Mo and Ingram
Trevor and Oto
Rodney and JC
Dre and Welch
Austin or Lockett

Something like that? Chip and Mav are gone. Who's unhappy now? JC, I guess. Maybe Austin.

I'd rather everyone stay. Some continuity would be nice. It also keeps some class balance unless it is welch or Ingram leaving.

I would agree with you 9 times out of 10. However, with Tyus and the biggest recruiting class in MN history coming up. We've gotta do what it takes to win.

I don't want to force anyone out (actually, I'm ton on the issue) but if players willingly transfer for
More talented ones. I won't complain this year.

That's what I'm saying though. If Chip or Mav leave, that's one less scholarship for that stellar MNclass.

You're assuming that they won't bank a scholarship. With the 2014 class as talented as it is I'm sure they would bank one. Doesn't necessarily have to screw up the scholarship situation for 2014. They could still easily fill the holes they want to fill in 2013 even if they bank one.

I'm confused - So can the U or Tubby just take away the scholarship if they wanted? Can they just say "Hey really sorry Mav, but we want Lockett here so you're really going to need to transfer".

They can absolutely, as athletic scholarships are one-year renewable. However, it's pretty poor form for a coach to do it outright.

Yes, but it can really hurt recruiting. Scholarships are only a one year contract.

Yes. They are renewed on a one year basis.

Of course they than can. Tubby and Kill can both do it. But unlike many anonymous posters, they realize it would destroy future recruiting to cut kids who want to stay.

Sorry, missed duplicate posts.

We get it, you're against cutting the players, most here are. Most people are saying Tubby should suggest a transfer, but not force it.
