Hello Gopherholers,

I thought I'd let everyone know that my brother Marcus signed a free agent contract with the Minnestoa Vikings today. He had a great mini-camp and impressed the coaches enough to warrant a free agent contract. Marcus struggled with injuries his entire career at the U but is finally healthy and is playing at the level that all of his current and former teammates have seen that he is capable of.

Cedric Mckinley was also brought on as a free agent.

Thanks to all of you on the site who have supported gopher football over the years, this is my first posting but may now chime in from time to time...I've been a big fan of the site for a long time and have often had to bite my tongue in response to some of the posters on here. In the end, I realize that MOST of the people who comment on this site are fans of the gophers and all want the same thing in the end. Thank you all for your support over the years of the program.

Congrats to your brother.

And if you'll allow me, thank you both for choosing to wear the Maroon and Gold.

Good deal, the more Gophers in the NFL the better

Classic overachiever where people keep telling him no and he continues to prove them wrong.
Marcus has the wheels and ability to play to stick around and make some money on special teams. Kick returns, punt and kick coverage. you name it as a young guy he will stick and continue to make a paycheck if he relishes playing special teams.

Vikings need to get younger and a little faster in the secondary, maybe he can help them back there down the road to.Don't know where those that say he hates contact are coming from, that is kind of a myth, always thought Marcus had a little extra gear that others do not have. Good luck to Marcus and Cedrick with the Vikings and go Gophers.

Mike - thanks so much for the great news. After we had heard reports on how well he had done I was wondering who would be the lucky team to pick him up.

Welcome to the board, I really hope you continue to post...you don't need to bite your tongue, you can debate - it will be fantastic to have another knowledgeable poster around.

Congrats to both Marcus and Cedric. The Gophers have a good shot of getting a number of guys into the NFL, that is so good for the program!

This is great news! I've always thought that if Marcus was healthy for an entire season so he could play to his abilities he would've been a nice asset to a team in the later rounds of the draft, however due to unfortunate injuries over his career, teams were not able to see him in his true form. Congrats to the Sherels family as this must be an exciting time for them! It will be great to see Marcus in the purple and gold and hopefully he will make the cut this summer! Go Vikings!

P.S. thanks for all your hard work during your career Mike! I always enjoyed the effort you put forth on the field! You were truly a team leader and a spiritual leader for the maroon and gold!

The Vikes need a cover corner and I think that's his best strength when he's at the top of his game. I think it's a good match. Sapp and Winfield are getting up their in age while Allen and Griffin are better in the run support than in coverage. Marcus could very well find himself a nice niche on the team. He'll at least get a good look and certainly because of injuries, the practice squad at first could be an option. They need depth at CB.

Not to mention his return skills...

YES!!! I now can say I've played ball many a time with a Viking...I know Sherels is going to do well, the kid is humble and stays out of trouble, plus he can run fast and jump high, an NFL team owner's dream, haha...

Congratulations to Marcus! We need some Gophers on the Vikings.

Mike still remember your pick in the endzone against Iowa.

Great news to hear. Hope both make it stick with the Vikes. Mike please comment your voice is needed.

Wow, three Gophers in Vikes camp this summer (including Nate Triplett) . Congrats to all three!

Mike...?

that's great news! The more Gophers in the NFL the better.

My question is this: obviously the players have to be talented but with 12 or 13 former Gophers getting a shot at making an NFL team this year. How much do you feel Brewster's relationship with NFL cOaches play into this if any? It seems to me Brewster is finally getting his players the recognition they have always deserved but may have not gotten from past coaches. I'm sure I may be way off that's why I would value your opinion.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Rhys Lloyd will also be in Purple this year.

Congrats to Marcus and thanks for your post Mike.

Go Gophers!!

Hell yeah Go Marcus!! As a John Marshall HS alum myself this feels especially good!!! :) He deserves it as does McKinley. Good to see these guys having success.

Thanks for the post, Mike! You were one of my favorite Gophers ever since I started watching the team.

Mike congrats on your brother signing with the Vikes! I know how you feel about biting your tongue. But we dont have to now because we aren't playing anymore!! Everything is fair game!!

Congrats to both and all of the former gophs who signed deals or were drafted this year.

Mike welcome to the board. Please don't hold back as your knowledge for the game and the program will be appreciated. As you said, the majority of everyone on here are fans and do want to see the program succeed. Also thanks for all of the hardwork you put in when you were playing.

Ski-U-Mah!

Great news for Marcus.

Mike- Your endzone pick going into the half in 06 is one of the highlights of my fan life. That is the only game I've been able to bring my dad to and it will always be a very special moment for me.

Your bro could make some big plays-so could you. I might have to pay attention to the Vikings now.

Well we all know he's a good enough athlete to make a roster. Wish him the best in trying to make that team. Would be great being able to cheer him on in purple, and the Vikes could definitely use some CB depth.

Thank you all for your kind sentiments regarding my playing days, I truly enjoyed every second of the time I was on the team.

To answer SquidWebers question I think that there's no question that the current staff has a great relationship with current NFL personnel. I see the difference especially on guys who are given a shot who may not have been in the past. Many of Brew's staff came directly from the NFL as did Brew himself so it stands to reason that they would be a source of information when teams are looking at our athletes. The NFL does an unbelieveable job of finding talent and are usually able to find guys. However, there are usually guys on every team that for one reason or another get passed over by teams, in the case of those players it benefits them greatly to have coaches who are recently removed from the NFL to vouch for them. Much in the same way that a high school football coach who has played Division I football is listened to by collegiate coaches when he says he's got the next Eric Decker playing for him...

There's my 2 cents, sorry if I rambled a bit...

Feel free to ramble on here. Ignore the haters. But it can be interesting to read people who care about the program and have sincere concerns (even if those opinions are sometimes expressed with a little too much vigor). It can also be useful to use this board as a source to get insight that is lacking with the local newspapers.

Your specific knowledge, history with the program and experience are very much welcomed here.

Best of luck to Marcus...he just needed a chance, and some time to play without injury. Looking forward to cheering him in purple for a long time.

I think it'd be a great addition to have some former players like Mike and Tony posting here. Also guys watch the haters here and you'll quickly realize they're 33% Iowa trolls, 33% Wisconsin trolls and 33% 17 year olds who learned everything they know about football playing video games.

I can vouch that this is indeed Mike Sherels and he completely bleeds Maroon & Gold, great guy.
