Marc Trestman - somebody please explain

I keep hearing from certain people that the only legitimate knock on Trestman is he doesn't have recruiting experience recently.

Is his inability to hold a job for longer than 4 years at any point in his coaching career not a "legitimate gripe" with Trestman?
Is the fact that he left many of his jobs by way of being fired, released, or not retained from his many jobs a high percentage of the time (as opposed for leaving by his own choice) a "legitimate gripe?"

Just curious, but are these legitimate gripes for not wanting Trestman? Or is it just me concerned by this?
Recruiting is a distant 5th in the reasons why I don't want Trestman, behind the two I just asked about, and also the lack of College Head Coaching experience, and the lack of success at his last stop at the college level (NCSU).

Good points Rosemountian. The "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" aspect of his career is the thing that bothers me the most. The life of the assistant coach often includes a lifetime membership with Rent-a-Center, but Trestman seems to hop around more than most. And for someone so widely hailed, that confuses me. Has to be a reason I guess, but it would give me pause.

I'm not a Trestman hater. He may do a good job if chosen. I just think he'd be a PR nightmare. Of course, we could end up with a PR nightmare in any event.

A coach who bounces from job to job every couple years is either a jackass or inept.

Trestman

Trestman has more to offer prospective recruits than anyone else on the U's "supposed" list. Ever wonder why Tim Tebow paid Trestman to prepare him to be an NFL qb? Because the man knows how how to coach. Period. Look at Rich Gannon, Jake Plummer, Scott Mitchell, Bernie Kosar, the list goes on. Under Trestman, all of these quarterbacks had career years and their teams were successful. By the way, last week Trestman won his second consecutive Grey Cup (CFL's superbowl).

I would imagine any sought after recruit (whose goal is likely to make it to the NFL) would realize that Trestman has over 20 years of experience as an NFL coordinator and knows what it takes to mold NFL talent. Trestman has many contacts in the area and all around the nation and is respected by anyone who is asked (ie. Tony Dungy). He is an honest man who actually cares about players and not just $$ like the other coaches we are going after. He is a Minnesota guy, suggesting that he actually cares about the program. Maybe the boosters and ex-players are on to something and we shouldn't simply dismiss them and believe Maturi and Bruininks have all of the answers (sure has worked out well so far..). Maturi won't give Trestman a fair shot because he knows the ex-players want Trestman and these players want Maturi out. Even Dungy, Maturi's self-proclaimed voice of the ex-players suggested we go after Trestman.

All that being said, Trestman would never come here. Not because he doesn't want the job, but because he would never work for an idiot like Maturi, who will be gone soon and doesn't really care about the program's future. Maturi wants to hire a big name to get people excited about the program and to keep heat off of himself. From what I hear, he is being turned down left and right. Maturi deserves credit for TCF bank stadium, and an equal amount of credit for the stadium being 1/2 filled on Saturdays.

Don't be surprised when Maturi hires some mediocre coach few of us have heard of because he can't get any of his A, B, or C choices.

We need an AD that coaches respect and want to work for! Not a Notre Dame grad who will be gone in a year!

Let's hear it haters...

Trestman did not even graduate from U of Minn-- he transferred to Moorhead St. so he could get playing time. He has not lived in Minnesota for years. I would rather retain Jeff Horton than hire Trestman. I would rather hire Scott Linehan that Trestman. He has more success than Trestman .

All of the players you named are QBs. I would rather have a current college head coach and if he needs a QB/coordinator look at Trestman for that position if he desires to --- not because he is being forced to by the local media and a segment of boosters.

You're not going to be persuaded by anyone that's the point...

Wrong. I came into this open-minded. Check my posting history if you don't believe me, I never pushed Trestman. But since I started looking into the guy I'm convinced that he's a good choice. Not the only good choice, maybe not the best choice, but someone I could be happy with.

A bunch of lame arguments against - what's my obligation, to give in just because you're mad at me? I'm laughing at you.

I skimmed over this thread so I'm not sure if this point was brought up or not...

There are A LOT of fans who are sitting on the fence as to whether they should re-up their season tickets. I can tell you that a Trestman hire would push MANY of them on the side of staying home and watching the game on TV or scalping below face value tickets on Saturdays.

A Trestman hire would do anything but energize the fan base. We're struggling to keep afloat after 2 years in a brand new stadium. Students would look at a CFL dude and pass as would many season ticket holders.

I'm in a group of 12 season ticket holders and I can tell you that a Trestman hire would surely not motivate 4 of them to re-up and I'm also sure most other season ticket holders have similar stories about their friends/relatives.

Gopherlady hit the nail on the head...season ticket holders are being used and abused because anyone can just walk up and pay half price for tickets on gameday. They need to add value and a Trestman hire would do the exact opposite, at least definitely in the shortterm.

Trestman will not get the job and is quite a ways down on my wish list.

That being said I think he would be an intriguing hire. His recruiting ability is a legit concern but I would think with his bouncing around the football world that he would have contacts all over the country, make that North America.+

But I don't have any apprehensions concerning his past job hoping. In most cases there was a good reason why he left a position and it didn't have anything to do with his performance. If there were issues with his job performance or personality he wouldn't have been able to keep landing on his feet. Word would get around to steer clear of him if there were issues.

Nearly everyone agrees that he has a great football mind and although he wasn't as successful in North Carolina if he is such a great football mind I would expect that he learned from the experience. Also as was already pointed out we would be hiring him as a head coach not the O.C. And it appears he knows how to run a team by his success in Canada. I know the CFL is not the same as the NFL or NCAA but if he has that great football mind I am sure he could adjust as it wouldn't be something he hasn't been involved in before.

But the timing just isn't right for Mark Trestman. If he would have been the guy after Mason I think he would have been welcomed by most everybody. But he is far from a can't miss guy and that is what the U needs at the moment. They have too much invested to roll the dice.

With the other coaches who have been mentioned, people have been able to come up with pretty good reasons why that coach should be considered. But it seems that Trestman, there's little but "why not?"

Much like Chryst, Trestman cannot be the guy due to circumstances beyond his control. This program is a mess. There is little faith in the Athletic Director. Ticket sales are lagging. Hiring Marc Trestman would be entirely the wrong kill-shot for this program and send it to Washington State-levels of irrelevance.

However, unlike Chryst, who is eliminated almost entirely by his status as a Badger and close-friend of the dithering AD, along with our professed desire for a current HC, there are very real concerns about Trestman. How anyone can just overlook the constant job changes, limited and failed college experience, complete lack of name-recognition with recruits, etc. is beyond me.

If Trestman came to the U of M a lot of people would be pissed off and there could be a decline in ticket sales. But once the team started winning a lot of you anti Trestman guys would be back in your seats at TCF. It is all about the win. I worry if you get a big name guy in here he will bail on short notice.

If the basis for hiring is Alumni and someone who is a winner, why not Bud Wilkinson? He's coached college roughly as recently as Trestman, and he actually was a winner in college.
