Funny to read all the threads bashing Leidner and so little bemoaning the fact that clearly our two best wr (Maye and Wolitarsky) are run of the mill guys from last year's offence. Cracks me up thinking about the people who post all off season about our wr "weapons".

A true freshman (Still) appears to be the third WR. Going to be a long year if Maye or Wolitarsky gets hurt. Hopefully we see more of Jones. Gentry, Gant and Holland are looking to me like they will have Victor Keise type careers (but they look great catching passes in practice!).

I don't need a Decker, just one or two Wheelwrights or Barkers. Even a Freuchte.

Victor Keise type careers? It's one game into their redshirt freshman year. You're getting a little ahead of yourself.

People keep overlooking Carter for some reason. He is our third receiver and played a lot more than Still.

Also, you can't throw in the towel for freshman after one game.

Good point on Carter. Forgot him. Hope i am wrong on the others but WRs who cannot play for a team bereft of WR talent will likely never play.

You are right about throwing in the towel but I think the RS FR WR have been a bit over hyped by the coaching staff which of course feeds into the collective GHole theory about how much they can contribute early.

Mitch missed a wide open laundry bag when he tried to throw in the towel.
 

Im not sure it was just 1 but I think the Gophers tried just 1-2 passes longer than 10 yards in the first half. I don't think for a second the coaches made that choice because of the receivers.
 

What a stupid post. These poor guys are out there trying to catch wounded ducks thrown on the edge of their catch radius (at best) and we're saying it's he WRs. Last year we were saying how terrible our WRs were and now Fruetche will be a practice squad guy with the Vikes. He must have got coached up really quick by the vikes then....

The Croft era will begin next year, til then...

Leidner didn't have a lot of time to get rid of the ball, he was rushed the whole game, TCU's right end was getting to him at an incredible pace. Hopefully that was just an anomaly and we won't face a rush like that again this season.
 



The freshmen WRS are the best athletes at WR we have had in years. They will be excellent in two years.
They were also playing against great dbacks, and Leidner did not do them any favors last night. None of the long balls to Still were close. Still could have caught one if he had stopped and cut back one step earlier, but he is a freshman.
Maye played really well against terrific dbacks, it is a bad match up for Woli, beca use those guys are all burners
 

Yes, yes we do. These receivers are terrible right now. We could play our defensive backs at WR and have more success.
 

To summarize the thread: Our OLine isn't terribly good and let pass rushers through at break neck speed. Our QB can't throw a swing pass much less hit an open guy 20 yards down the field (thank goodness Boykin had a little trouble as well). And our receivers can't seem to get open to save their life. I think all 3 are true.

I'm glad KJ Maye can make tough catches, because no one else appears to have that ability. Eric Carter did manage to get himself wide open, but ML missed him bad...
 

Receivers seemed to have a problem getting any separation last night.
Frankly I was surprised that Melvin Holland didn't see a snap last night until the last minute (attempted) drive....

Why can't it be both the QB and WRs? If it hits you in the hands, you need to catch it. No excuses. And yes, there were balls dropped last night that were thrown right where it needs to be.

At the same time, the QB needs to make things easier as well, and give the receivers a chance on some of the deep balls.

Some people are acting like the receivers need to make miraculous catches every time the ball is thrown to them. That's simply not true.

They have to make miraculous catches because they can't get any separation. TCU's receivers had no problem getting separation. Ours can't do it.
 

I'm really not worried about the WR's, they will be fine, I'm more worried about the OL. Give Leidner more time to throw and his accuracy will go up and the WR's will look much better.

TCU may have the best group of WR's in the country too.

Right with you Mkaz. We saw the same thing last year. When our OL blocks well our offense looks good.
 

Any time your OL gets dominated the way ours got dominated last night it's going to be a long night. I don't know if that means TCU's D-Line was that good or OL was that bad but I know we lost that match up. The few successful running plays seemed to occur when their entire DL blew past our OL so fast that they were past the hand off.

Boykin had little to no pressure all night so we lost that OL DL fight too. Despite all that we were within a score of a top team which is mind boggling. If that's the top qb in the country and Mitch is somehow the worst i just don't see that much separation in their performance. Boykin missed more wide open receivers than Mitch, but definitely was better at putting the ball on target overall. I think you have to concede that part of Mitch's performance is based on having no time and part is on having 7-8 or so drops compared to TCU receivers having 2-3 drops, what's left is on Mitch and it's still about consistency, is he the guy who marched down with several good throws on the last scoring drive? or is he the guy who bounces the ball to some receivers and managed at one point to throw it too high for a 6'10" TE from 10 yards away.

As to the OP. Still looks like he has potential. The jump over a DB to try to comeback to the ball looked impressive. Wolitarsky and Maye look servicable. Carter... meh, wait and see, Wozniak... meh he's about one more non catch from me hoping he never sees the field again. If we can get a TE that can catch healthy we are ok at receivers.

X2 A little common sense and football knowledge. Talk about an overreaction . The last two years when receivers have good seperation on deep passes we have been unable to get the ball to them. A combination of Leidner and protection.

I actually thought we did a decent job on pressuring and containing Boykin against a very good offensive line.

He was targeted twice. He caught ball on first play of game, then Mitch threw ball 2 feet over his head in 4th quarter. What the he!! are you talking about?

Holland played some in the 1st half. There was an obvious hold that should have been called against TCU on him that wasn't.
 

The TCU receivers are clearly in a different league, the ability to get separation and outmuscle defenders for receptions is impressive. Our receivers need to improve but they also need a more consistent QB who can throw the ball out front, too often one these guys are being thrown at their back shoulder in blanket coverage or forced to attempt circus receptions.
 

I worry about the OL due to Campions injury. The DL was going against one of the best OLs in the country, the only OL we face that's equal or better is OSU's, we will not face a better group of wide outs. Leidner ,was statistically decent, against the second best defense we'll face (OSU is better). It'll be an interesting season, 9-2 going into the final game with Wisky, is definitely possible. Bring on CSU

I'm not saying our DL sucks I'm just saying we lost that match up too. It wasn't by as big a margin as our OL got beat by their DL.
 

I think leidner is great at making the right reads. Although he often seems to want to throw more to the receiver, instead of where he will be.That being said, the few timing/"throw it where they ain't" routes he completed, were to Maye/Woli. It seems like he just needs to build rapport with all the new targets around him(and there are a lot). Then just clean up some of his mechanics. To many wobbly ducks out there. I get that there is a chicken/egg thing perpetually spinning in all posts about our passing game.(I fall on the side that there would be less drops, if they were thrown tighter, more catchable passes), but I digress... If we can keep the momentum R. Smith was bringing in the 2nd half, so our play action is respected, plus do the little things I mentioned, we'll be fine. Let Leidner do what he does best; run the zone read & keep em' honest with play action.
