Can anyone tell me that we will be anything but a bubble team for the next couple years?

Mbakwe - Goner, going to get a paycheck somewhere
Ralph - Same old, good moments, bad moments, always leaves you wanting more
Colt - ineffective for the most part
Rodney - some nice dunks against lesser teams, invisible vs talent
All Frosh - nice BT role players, should keep us right in the middle of the pack in the BT

What there is suppose to get me excited for the next 2-3 years? With Tubby's Mason-like recruiting and pathetic offense how do we become anything more than a .500 team? Why do we care if Tubby leaves? I'm confused...

tubby

Because Monson was worse than tubby. We were .500 in the bigten in his best years. We are .500 with tons of transfers and injuries.

People expecting tubby to recruit out of state McDonald's all-americans to Minnesota have to be dissappointed. He could get them at Kentucky but it won't happen here. I have been dissappointed with the recruiting, the execution, and the lack of player improvement.

A lot rides on Andre Hollins. If he can play the point, score and set up others we could have a very deep and athletic team. If he cannot it could be a disaster.

Chip could develop into a Kevin Clark type scoring guard. Austin has a well rounded game and if he can learn to shoot it better he could really turn into something. Walker and Eliason are both interesting prospects.

If trevor leaves we are hurting and slow at pf. Neither Iverson, Walker, Sampson, or Eliason can play that position for long.

Why would we be upset if Tubby leaves? I don't know, because even with the worst luck of any team in College Ball over the last two years, we've managed to stay in contention to go to the tourney? Are we Kentucky? Has this board morphed into Cat's Pause? Were you expecting a national championship by now? And Tubby to be able to lay hands on his players and cure them of all of their physical and mental illnesses?

No, but I would expect ONE tournament win in his first 6 years. With this roster, no chance in he!! that happens. Can he piggy-back a couple more good recruiting classes onto the Coleman/Hollins class? Maybe, probably not, but thats what we need to look forward to.

Seriously? WIth what roster? The full one, or the badly depleted one we're limping around with right now? And what are you talking about with his recruiting? His first two classes were top 25, last year's had two top 150 players with Hollins and Big Mo, and Eliason isn't a scrub, plus everyone pretty much agrees Chip has played rather well, especially for a late signee. This year's class has two more top 100 players in Hollins (who looks like he could be a real stud) and Coleman. I fail to see the "Mason-like" recruiting.

Too pessimistic

This team is simply depleted this year, losing both 1a and 1b options at the point. I am optimistic about next year because I do like the freshman class and the incoming guys. Colt and Ralph will be solid (if unspectacular) next year. Andre Hollins is a key; a lot riding on him.

Trevor could very well go pro somewhere, and he will be a big loss if he does.

It isn't talent or recruiting, it's getting the right starting five and some chemistry going. Rodney needs to go to sixth man, Chip needs to handed the reins (pass or fail) HoF goes back to 2, and stick with it. Austin at SF.

I am completey OK....

with Tubby taking less talent players, but then you have to coach them up to the opposition.

We have not recruited anywhere near the talent level that Ohio State and Illinois (or Purdue, Wisconsin, Michigan St, or Mich) have....just check the number of top 100 players on the rosters.

We have 1. Ralph. Devoe would have been 2.

Ohio State and Illinois have 6 or 7 (or more) each. Ditto Purdue and MSU.

When you combine our lack of (TOP) talent, with the roster depletion, it's a recipe for struggle.

I don't understand the unrealistic expectations some of us have for our team...look back at the great Clem/Dutcher/Musselmen years...show me where they had a roster of 6-8 top 100 players and won 20 games year after year and went deep into the tourny....it never happened.

We had some good teams and players...but we never had the tOSU or IU or UI or MI type talent or streaks....that said, those teams aren't all that right now either.

I don't think we can overlook how much this team needed Royce White as a shooter and scorer, or Justin Cobbs for depth at PG and Devoe for scoring at the 2. Rodney Williams was always a project...big ceiling...needs time. Royce was the supposed to the impact player along with Mbakwe last year...and they couldn't play. Royce is gone and Trevor is the player we thought he was...but now Al is out again and Devoe is gone...we can talk about why this all happened and point fingers...we have that luxury as fans...but lets not pretend we were Duke for the last 20 years and Tubby has wrecked it or we were Michigan and now we're Michigan..if you know what I mean.

If this year ends up not being great...we can debate the whys and what fors...but lets not pretend that this is anything different.

Andre Hollins is a top 5 high school point guard, but he's not a shooter. He does most of his damage in the lane and at the foul line. Problem is, who shoots the ball next year? We won't have one guy on the roster that can shoot it, unless Coleman really surprises. This staff has really failed at bringing anyone in that can shoot or really score the basketball well.

Maybe the recruits see how our players don't improve offensively year to year and are scared off by that?

Next year we'll be heavy on the bigs again with Colt/RS3/Mo up front. I presume we'll sign Chris Colvin or a similar Juco PG, so that guy + Andre Hollins (limited minutes) should anchor the PG situation. The big question in my mind is who will score? Hopefully Joe Coleman can help there?

PG-Colvin (Or other Juco PG)
PG-Hollins
SG-Chip
SG-Hollins
F-Rodney
F-RS3
F-Colt
F-Mo Walker

If Hollins (and potentially another guy yet to be signed) can play mediocre at PG....this team wins 12 conference games next year. If they can play well at PG, the gophers are Big Ten title contenders next year.

(assuming every non-senior comes back)

At the start of the season if you knew they would have to play without Nolen and Joseph for most of the Big Ten season what would your Big Ten record prediction have been.

I would say 8-10 or 9-9. I think they are playing a little under what i would have expected but not that much.

I caught myself at the beginning of the year looking forward to next years driving/slashing guards instead of our veteran guards on this years team-- then I rethought it and realized we were in a great position having 2 seniors and a junior to take all the pressure this year and let Austin and Maverick and Chip ease into the rugged Big10 schedule-- fast forward to now and I am back to looking forward to next year when (hopefully) our guards can break down a defender and get to the paint and make a play.

I don't understand the unrealistic expectations some of us have for our team....

When you are paying top 15 money ($2m), I don't think its unrealistic to expect to finish higher than middle of the pack 1 year and maybe squeak out a tourney win in your first handful of years.

Agreed.

Where is he going? Turkish league? Aussie league?

I'd guess he'll do better than that. I'm thinking Europe or Israel. If not, then yes Turkey or Australia I suppose? One thing I feel 100% confident about is he won't be at the U.

Well said. Some people on here sure seem content with mediocrity. Patience is good....only up to a point. I never expected Tubby to be able to win Big Ten championships, but I think some top 4 finishes in the conference isn't asking the world.

Actually under Musselman there were seasons where the team was 22-5 or something and ranked second or third in the country. Also won big tem titles.

Under Dutcher (with M. Thompson, K. McHale, etc. etc.) we had seasons where we were ranked #1 in the country, with a team that went 24-3. Unfortunately they were banned from post season play. Don't forget the 1982 team that went 23-6 and won the big ten. They had some very good teams.

Even Clem did well and recruited some very good players. He took us to a sweet 16, and elite 8 and a final 4. (unfortuately, i won't defend the cheating, etc.)

Gophers have won just 4 Big 10 titles (counting 1997) since The Barn opened in 1920's.

Haskins made E8 in 1990 and NC game in 1997 but no S16 that I can see?
