Last year's average was in the high 82's and this year's in the low 85's. That's a difference of about 15-20 spots in the rankings if they maintain that average.
 

We have some 3* players that have really impressive offers, as opposed to generally beating out MAC teams or bottom feeders from PF conferences for 3* players. We're also way ahead of the game in terms of early commits which, in theory, should allow Fleck & Co. to focus on some highly ranked guys to fill out the class, as opposed to scrambling to fill the class at the end. Also, it's so early that some of our guys simply don't have much film or haven't attended camps to be properly evaluated by the recruiting services.

Sori-Marin was injured two seasons in a row, so no one's really seen him play. That is, until he showed up to the recent Nike combine & blew the doors off of everyone with his physical testing. He's an athletic freak. It's my understanding that anything over 100 in the Nike SPARQ score is an attention getter & kid scored a 101.19, plus played well. Fleck & Co flew him up to the U, worked him out, got to know him & offered. The Ivy League offers show he's a smart kid, but he undoubtedly would have gotten & probably will get, more P5 offers as he turned many heads at the Nike combine. Good enough for me.

You can't work kids out on campus at the FBS level - unless it's at a camp, which I don't think Fleck and staff have held since they've been here.

Right now, just the top 12 classes have a combined 160+ 4-star commits. Are there a bunch more yet to commit? Yes, but some of the usual top schools (Ala, Aub, Ten, Mich, OU, OkSO, UCLA, Fla, Stanford, etc.) have yet to start grabbing their share, which is large. I would love Fleck's class to make top 40. Realistically, he's beginning to run out of spots.

I believe Gophs 2018 class will settle in around 45. I think that's a great first true class for Fleck here. 15 higher than this year and his highest ranked class ever. I'll be real happy. If it ends up higher, it's icing on the cake in my opinion.

That number is not a direct analogy but get the gist...so similar to the 2016 class. I would say closer to 15 spots without at least one 4-star.
 

I don't focus on the star rankings much. Just look at the past 5 NFL drafts. There are so many first round guys who just didn't pan out. I much prefer to look at how PJ's staff ranks someone.
 

He's got great measurables. Let's hope he can stay healthy. Welcome aboard.

I try to keep a variety with my posts and not spam 9+ wins and class in the 40s every other post.

I thought you added me to the ignore list 5 months ago?

What do you mean the top 12 classes have a combined 160+ 4 star commits? That's like 100 more than what I counted.

Yikes, my bad.

Was jumping between the last few class years to compare where we are now with how many eventually went to those top 12 classes, since Gophs currently sit 12th on Rivals.

This gets back to my general distrust of star ratings.

People say: Fleck is recruiting 3* players, just like Kill and Claeys.

And the response: Fleck's 3* players are better than Kill's 3* players.

My reaction - then they need a better/more accurate rating system. Why does 5* have to be the top? Why not a 10-star system?

Maybe I'm just simple - but if player A is better (or perceived to be better) than player B, then Player A should have a higher/different rating.

If there was a 10-star system, and if you said: Fleck's recruit is a 6 on the 10-star scale, as opposed to 4 and 5-star ratings for the Kill recruits, then that tells me Fleck's recruits are better (or perceived to be better.)

But, when you tell me that Fleck's 3-star recruits are better than Kill's 3-star recruits, my first response is to scream "bullsh*t" at the top of my lungs.

I mean, if I have $100 dollars in my wallet, and you have $200, then you have more money than I do. But if you tell me that your $100 is worth more than my $100, then I just want to hit you over the head with a blunt object.

Both Rivals and 247 have numbers that go deeper than just star rankings. Not hard to figure out if you click on the websites.

There's no question Fleck, Ciarrocca, and Simon had a hand in developing Corey Simon. In fact, I'd say the most impressive part was Fleck recognizing his talent and taking a chance. Davis was not academically eligible until the summer he enrolled. He carried less than a 2.0 into his senior year and an ACT score about half necessary to qualify. Most programs weren't willing to offer but Corey semi-miraculously got himself eligible and the rest is history. He is Jeff Jones but with a Hollywood ending instead of a trail of tears.

I usually agree with dpo on that argument, you can't really trust heights, weights, and 40 times etc posted by high schools.

But this was electronic timed at an event with a bunch of high profile recruits. Only 2 of them ran sub 4.5, which would make sense, so the 4.33 seems legit in this case.

There are some Minnesota kids that scored really high, DB from Highland with good size, DL from Woodbury, and what do you know another Marshall kid...but he is on the small side for D1 but impressive none the less!

from the Marshall Paper: In 12 games, Lee finished second in the area in rushing yards (1,868) and first in rushing touchdowns (38), breaking school records in the process. Lee also set the school record for most career rushing touchdowns, breaking Beau Bofferding’s record.

Lee will be an interesting case. He dominated at his current level of competition - just ran away from people based on superior speed. Marshall had most games won at halftime, so Lee didn't see as many snaps in the second half of games until they got into the section playoffs. I could see him at a lower-level D1 program - or maybe as more of a specialist/3rd-down back/kick returner at a bigger program. Josh could chime in on this - he has seen him play more than I have.

New Lenox (Ill.) Providence Catholic junior outside linebacker recruit Mariano Sori-Marin (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) added a recent offer from Minnesota and gave the Gophers his verbal commitment late last Friday night.

"It's been pretty overwhelming," Sori-Marin said. "Minnesota just offers the best fit for me so I committed. Minnesota offers strong academics plus they also play in the Big Ten. After I visited I knew that Minnesota is a great place to be so I talked it over with my family and I committed."

Sori-Marin filled us in on how he went from Gophers prospect to verbal pledge in just a few week's time.

"Both Coach (Brian) Callahan my recruiting coach at Minnesota and the defensive coordinator (Robb Smith) came to watch one of my workouts in person a few weeks ago. The Minnesota coaches called me and invited me to come up and make a campus visit. I went to Minnesota last Monday with my parents for a visit. We sat down and had a chance to take a full tour of the campus and the facilities. I also had a chance to sit down and talk with some of the people involved on the academic side along with talking to several of the coaches at Minnesota. Minnesota did offer me before we left campus. We went home and talked it over and gave it a few days to sink in and in the end Minnesota is a great fit and I'm very excited to commit to the University of Minnesota."

Sori-Marin also pointed towards head coach PJ Fleck and the excitement around the football program as another big factor in his decision.

"Coach (PJ) Fleck is just a high energy guy who is also very down to earth. Everyone on the team and around the football program are all in and everyone is committed to the team. It's just a really exciting time at Minnesota and I definitely want to be a part of that excitement."

Did Sori-Marin ever think that he would end up playing in the Big Ten?

"I thought it would eventually happen. I worked really hard and I know that God has a plan. The coaches at Minnesota recruited me when they were at Western Michigan so we always had stayed in touch even after they left for Minnesota. It's just an amazing feeling right now to be committed to Minnesota."
