Dec. 11 (UPI) -- An Ohio lawmaker proposed to make flag planting at Ohio Stadium a felonious act, less than two weeks after Michigan Wolverines players performed the ritual after they upset the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Republican state Rep. Josh Williams proposed the O.H.I.O. Sporstmanship Act on Tuesday in Columbus. The bill prohibits planting a flagpole and flag in the center of the Ohio Stadium field on the day of a college football game, before, during or after the competition.

Those who violate the proposed law could be charged with a fifth-degree felony, which is punishable with six to 12 months of imprisonment and fine up to $2,500.

"I am proud to introduce the O.H.I.O Sportsmanship Act to make flag planting at midfield a felony in the state of Ohio," Williams wrote Wednesday on X. "Behavior that incites violent brawls and puts our law enforcement officers in danger has no place on the football field."

Several Wolverines players slammed a flag, which featured the Michigan logo, into the Ohio State logo at midfield after beating the Buckeyes on Nov. 30 in Columbus.

Buckeyes players responded by charging into the Wolverines, exchanging shoves and punches. Police used pepper spray in an attempt to diffuse the brawl. The players were eventually separated and went into their respective locker rooms.
 


The fact that “lawmakers” even comment proves the fact that part of our government is overstayed its use or simply not doing what it’s originally designed to do. I know they are supposed to represent their constituents in dc and this is an Ohio st “issue” but come on.

To clarify, it’s their state legislature which would enact this for the state of Ohio, so this takes place in Columbus and not DC.

Perhaps they can work on multiple things at once. Regardless the 3 fights we saw on rivalry weekend was a bit much. Just go celebrate in front of your fans on the road. Storm if you have to at home and get the road players in the locker room quickly. Do the handshakes need to happen in some of these high profile games perhaps not?

That escalated quickly and ridiculously.

Murder is already illegal in all 50 states, while the national anthem talks about steadfast devotion to a flag which stays flying through a whole bunch of rough times.

I'm sure he's vigorously for it since it was:
  • Proposed by a R
  • Targets a very specific group of "others"
  • Allows him to feel brazenly hypocritical by restricting speech of his foes while moaning about speech for the groups he likes. Nobody in Ohio brought a bill about those neo-Nazis who marched with other flags in Columbus a few weeks ago.
  • Allows him to simultaneously act like part of a persecuted group while rooting for the richest and most powerful entity in its class (OSU football)
 

This is not something there needs to be a law for. If the kids won't stop fighting and they get pepper sprayed that's on them. Charge people with assault if you have to. Fine the teams, suspend players. Ban matchups between the schools for a year.

There are many ways to go at this without a new law.

It’s legit article - I learned about it on PTI yesterday and then googled it and there were multiple other articles on it - I picked this one because I felt it best captured the pure pettiness of this action.
