Most of the people who like to think this I am sure have never been there. The state is half desert, Denver is a dump, and the mountains are a pile of rocks. That being said the U is a better school, has better facilities, and has a bigger fan base.
I am not sure why they are even a division one school. Look at their athletic department. Their basketball program sucks, they have no baseball team, no wrestling team, and I am at a loss why they do not have hockey. They have a football team and nothing else.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Somebody finally agrees! Although I like the mountains, but if you've ever been to the school it definately is not on par with facilites. To be completely honest, outside of Boulder, there really isn't a large following of the Buffs. There are just to many other sports teams to watch in the smaller area of the state. But like others have said before it will be about fit not the caliber of coach per se.

Though I agree with you that the Gopher job should be a more attractive job than Colorado, I think we need to be honest as well.

The Gophers don't have the largest following outside the Twin Cities and suburbs. The TC's are a bigger area than boulder, but still... Being from western Minnesota, Gopher fans are lack luster for the most part. The only time I vividly remember the Gopher's taking my neck of the woods over and the entire state was the run to the final four.

This isn't limited to Western Minnesota. I have spent a lot of time in Northern Minnesota, Warroad, International Falls, Hallock, Baudette, Little Fork, Roseau, Grand Rapids, Brainerd, ect. and beyond Gopher hockey most people don't pay much attention to Gopher football. I think mostly because it is hard to watch them regularly since the Big 10 network is not offered by most major cable companies. International Falls has a pretty good following, but that is because of the legend of Bronko Nagurski.

A few winning seasons though and some competition against Wisconsin and Iowa will change this in a second though!

What do you consider a major cable company? They pretty much all carry the BTN on their preferred basic tier in Minnesota.

Mediacom and Cable One were two of the biggest.

#'s 12 and 14 nationally according to this site and not close to the big four of Comcast, Directv, Dish, and Time Warner. http://www.ncta.com/Stats/TopMSOs.aspx

Granted, I don't know how that plays out in greater MN, perhaps these mid-sized firms have a bigger presence there.

In either case, as of last fall (2009) CableOne added the BTN (http://forum.cabletv.com/cableone/29917-cable-one-now-has-big.html).

MediaCom had it going back to 2008 (http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/353/big-ten-network-mediacom-reach-agreement).

I don't mean to be picky, but I found it hard to believe from your post that any of the big or even mid-sized cable firms didn't carry BTN still.

At the time the BTN was not offered. I know because I wanted to watch Gopher football and could not. You can call me a liar if you want to believe that the Gopher's have this great following in the State, but I don't believe that to be true. Not from my experience.

I'm not saying no one beyond the TC's cares about the Gophers, but you can't honestly believe (especially over the past few years) that the Gophers command a lot of following.

Gopher hockey yes, football.... Well the Vikings currently and then had the market cornered. Once again that can be changed with a little bit of success and a new head coach.

MN vs Colorado

Gary Barnett successful at NW and Colorado was on KFAN tonight. I didn't hear it all but he just savaged Colorado. 7 Presidents in the last 10 years or some such number. 3 different chancellors.
They have no money. Can't give asst coaches contracts by law. Moving to PAC 10 will will be way more difficult to win. Lots and lots of dysfunction within the greater program making it a long process to change the culture. Mc Cartney would be the best guy to to come in and create some change for the next guy but anyone else will get swallowed up. On and on. Very matter of fact....just a horrible situation.

Heresy to say it, but I think someone will begin winning here and then everyone will take it for granted you can win here. We've had a lot of mediocre to bad coaches hired over a long period of time (Holtz being the one big exception and he skipped out). Mason wasn't bad but wasn't getting to .500 in the conference, though he did some good things (eight All-Americans, seven bowls, two really good seasons). The right coach will win here. We just haven't hired him.

One big-time negative about Colorado (possibly previously mentioned): they can't give any assistants more than month-to-month contracts... they will not offer more than the "U"... their big selling point over here is that you can win easier in the Pac-10 in the next 5-7 years... and the belief among a few coaches I have spoken with = that is spot on.

No, however dpodoll did say something along the lines that he'd be surprised if we got a coach who had any other offers. That to me says that he thinks we are a worse job than just about any other school out there. I disagree.

My mistake. I should've been more precise and said what I meant, which was "no other BCS offers." You'll have to forgive me if I don't get all tingly when we steal away Akron's preferred candidate.

I said it once already in this thread, and I'll say it again: all other things being equal, Minnesota is not a desirable college football coaching job. Unless the University is willing to pay above market value (like top-20 salary, minimum), we will all be thoroughly underwhelmed, the coach will be underqualified and not in-demand, and we will probably be going through this again in another 4-5 years. That's been the pattern for quite some time. Mason was able to last because he actually was an in-demand candidate. Other than Mason and Holtz, who only came here to rebuild his rep until something better came along, we haven't hired an in-demand coach since possibly Warmath, and even that is arguable.

Colorado passed the Taxpayers' Bill of Rights (TABOR) a few years back and that has put a crimp in the growth of government spending there. I don't know if or how that would affect the University and, by extension, the football program. It may contribute to the turnover in the University Administration as it might be difficult to set budgets year-to-year. All conjecture on my part.

I never said a word about the Gophers following in Greater MN. I agree with you on that and the only way to change it is to win. What I disagreed about is that any significant number of people don't get the BTN in their area anymore.

Are you paying attention? Not doing what we have done for forty years is the plan. Maybe we will get it done and maybe we won't, but your point has already been acknowledged by Bruininks.

Who are you talking to?

Remember BTN is on the basic package on DirecTV NATIONWIDE and I believe on std Dish Network in all of the Big Ten states....no other conference has that combination of accessibility (especially on the national front). Every game for a recruit WILL be seen nationally....and not for a premium price either. That is a good recruiting tool too. $22M a yr is nice as well.

It is the reason I still have DTV down here in Texas.
