Laptop theft case send to Mpls prosecution attorney

I think this is still as fuzzy as ever:

"...Royce White has been called a possible suspect"

And whomever the suspect is, is not cooperating:
Miner has said one person in that group had been identified, but Miner declined to disclose that person's name.

"We met with our only known suspect and his attorney very briefly," Miner said. "The suspect failed to answer the questions we had for him."

for all we know the suspect doesn't know anything. Not cooperating in the eyes of the "cop" could be someone saying I don't know anything about the laptop being stolen.

Or maybe Royce White was walking past the dorm on his way to the library and he saw a group of 4 or 5 suspicious looking people hanging around. He followed them into the building with the intention of trying to prevent them from committing a crime. Unfortunately, Royce's efforts at being a Good Samaritan were unsuccessful. But we all know that Royce feels bad that he was not able to do more to stop the thieves. The U should probably give him an award for his heroic action that night, and then get him back on the basketball team as quickly as possible. Because we are really going to need Royce when the Big 10 season starts.

At least this is some measure of progress towards resolution. I would hope that within a month they will either file charges or announce that they have reviewed the case and will take no action at this time.

very surprised if this "case" goes any further than today's action.....

the UMPD does not appear to have anything that they can "pin on" royce proving he did it. and they don't have an eye witness to the alleged theft. all they have is royce white's well known face being seen in a residence hall around the same time as the laptop theft.

i see the minneapolis city attorney throwing this case out for "lack of evidence". a tape showing someone walking into a building and then leaving a building does not indicate guilt. assuming we know all of the important details of this incident it really seems like the UMPD is grasping at straws.

the twincities.com story indicates the case being reviewed is with regards to filing charges against White.

The article does support the accounts, I think from Fox9, that indicated there were a number of people, that were going from door to door and opening them and saying " where's the party? ".

So either Royce did or he knows who did and won't give them up. They still probably don't have any direct proof, he won't be charged, but still won't be back on the team.

This is honestly the biggest joke of a case I have seen in a while. $hit or get off the pot, seriously. The evidence seems pretty weak, the item was returned. Oh so White hasnt cooperated with authorities, isnt that called your right to remain silent. Any attorney will tell you not to talk to the police.

Some of us on Gopherhole KNOW Royce White is GUILTY. Some of us on Gopherhole KNOW Royce White is INNOCENT. And Some of us on Gopherhole just don't KNOW either way.
It seems UpnorthGo4 has made up his/her mind. That's what's great about America. Everyone gets their say.

While I agree with most that it looks like there is not enough evidence to get a convection of royce. When it comes to public opinion he is guilty, right or wrong. Where there is smoke, there is usually Royce-might have been a better analogy with Bostick.
The reason you do not cooperate with authorities is becuase you are quilty or you know who is. Either way you are quilty of a crime. If you have nothing to hide you cooperate, any good attorney should be telling you that. But if you did do the crime, you are right any attorney will tell you not talk to the police.

wow.....just wow! really?

Let's be honest here. Who in GopherHole was never a prime suspect in multiple instances of theft when they were in college? And who here has never pleaded quilty to shoplifting and 5th degree assault at any time in their life? The important thing is not whether White stole he laptop, or was with the people who actually committed the crime. The only thing that matters is what charges can be proven against him. The only thing that is important about the student athletes who represent the U of M is how well they play their sport - not what kind of people they are. Winning is what matters. If the only Division I college in Minnesota gets a national reputation for recruiting habitual criminals and punks to represent the school - so be it. If that is what it takes to win, that is what we need to do. Anyone who disagrees is a loser, and most importantly, they are not true Gopher fans.

While true that in most circumstances you should cooperate if you have nothing to hide, I would consider an attorney completely irresponsible if they said to always cooperate to the fullest when innocent.

There are simply too many intangibles. However, Royce White hasn't exactly inspired confidence in his prior actions. So barring a situation where there is total misconduct by the police/prosecutor, it would be in Royce's best interest to cooperate if truly completely innocent.

Oh yes, I'm sure that article proves Royce did or he knows who did?

CROCK!!

Royce could be guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or hangin with the wrong people. Or maybe he did it, but the truth is, if you don't know anything and the cops think you do, if you tell them you don't know anything, they tag you with........."uncooperative"...

I am not getting excited one way or the other, but if Royce is innocent, its an ugly thing being dragged through it like this.

Since RW so graciously introduced those on his "music" video, I would assume those "musicians" were not on the dorm video surveillance tape with him. Sorry, J-Strings didn't do it or he is taking the 5th!

The laptop was returned (?). No fingerprints...ha...wiped clean - they must have watched CSI!

Was this laptop encrusted with diamonds? Can't we just get over it? I can't believe there is an "investigation" over something so petty. I had a friend who had his car stolen and it sure didn't seem like the cops put this sort of effort into 'cracking the case.'

for all we know the suspect doesn't know anything. Not cooperating in the eyes of the "cop" could be someone saying I don't know anything about the laptop being stolen.

People who are innocent generally will want to cooperate with the police to clear their name, not hide behind their attorneys. What is also quite amazing is the police knew who to talk to, to get the the laptop returned. ESP? Maybe the people who stole the laptop and went into other rooms showed remorse and their conscience got the best of them, so they returned items taken. Or perhaps when Royce and friends were confronted about the theft they were so disgusted by this theft, that they did their own investigation and found the laptop and forced the thieves to return it thus saving the day.

What I hope and believe will happen is that the first to talk will walk. Let the thieves squirm.

A long time ago I was told the wise story about a guy walking down a country road who came upon a pile of dung. After picking it up he said it feels like dung, still not sure he smelled it and it smelled like dung, not totally convinced yet he tasted it and it tasted like dung. This man was able to reach the conclusion that if it looks like dung, smells like dung, and tastes like dung it must be dung!

If it was Royce White being thrown to the ground instead of the security guard at the mall, White's attorney would have been screaming brutality instead of disorderly conduct and they would be suing the mall.

If White is capable of knocking down the security guard 2X after stealing at the mall, (yes stealing, White did plead guilty), this behavior alone is not worthy of a MN basketball scholarship. This kid then gets involved one way or another in the theft of a laptop from a dorm. (Look at the evidence Mr Maturi, charge or no charge White needs to be dismissed from the team. Because there might not be enough evidence to charge White, the evidence also will say White isn't innocent.)

I had looked forward to watching White play ball this year but now I believe the only ball White is heading to playing is prison ball.

After knowing more then your grandfather, who did the best he could to raise you, perhaps maybe someday you will realize he was right about the "friends" you keep. Maybe it will be too late.....

It's sad that a lot of time and money is being spent on a case where a laptop had been stolen and since returned to its owner.

Someone stole a ballpoint pen and a number 2 pencil out of my desk drawer. I need justice served!!!

Aren't there rapists, pedifiles, and murderers out there we could be pursuing?

Agree, well said. "Because there might not be enough evidence to charge White, the evidence also will say White isn't innocent"

Let's imagine for a moment that Timmy Torgesson from Twig was a "suspect" in the theft of a computer that had been returned to the owner. No eye witnesses and 30 days later they didn't have enough evidence to outright charge him. Can you imagine in your wildest dreams that it would go to the DA for review?

I'm not making excuses for our Mr. White, but give me a break.

Hilarious...

That's quite a leap. So Minnesota, the only Division 1 college in the state, now is on the verge of getting "a National reputation of recruiting habitual criminals and punks". I am sure Ralph Sampson III, Adam Weber, Eric Decker, Blake Hoffarber, Al Nolen, Rodney Williams and 99% of the rest of the Gopher athletes would not concur with your assessment. This is self righteous drivel.
No one is accusing UpnorthGo4 of being a loser or "not a Gopher Fan". Most on here are Gopher Fans. But comments like these are pretty inflammatory. The kind of thing that got people strung up in the old west. It might be funny but it's not very nice.

Is ANYBODY else ready to cut ties with this thug???

Do we really want a kleptomaniac/thug/bully representing our school and state?

There's a reason the police haven't cleared his name....He's a 6-8, non-caucasion and obviously NOT hard to identify on videotape among the normal sized Minnesotans named Gustafson or Olson....Yes, I know...Innocent until proven guilty, right? Well, I'm not associated with any court...I've seen enough from this guy to know that he doesn't deserve to represent the Gophers. Its a priviledge and NOT a god-given right just because you stand 6-8 and weigh 240 lbs and can hit better than 55% on your free throws.

I don't need to wait for the police report or charges...Lets move on, sans this scumbag.

Lets move on, sans this scumbag.

Hang him boys. String him up. Ernie you get the rope. Badge? I don't need no stinken badge!!!
Ain't this a great country. Court? We don't need no stinken court!!!!
