Might be time to dial back the offense snaps a little since he isn't really a big part of the offensive gameplan on that side. He had a really bad game and made some mistakes on punt return that you just can't make.

Playmaker trying to make plays and is probably pressing a bit as opposed to playing more free the way he did last year.
 

Perich is talented, yesterday he made mistakes and tried to do too much because of them. Probably the mistake on the touchdown on D, fair catch punt, and then taking sack on that dumb trick play as well as the iced fumble play from the punt. Just not a good football play to take that risk or situational awareness. Football is sometimes as much mental as it is physical. Tricky out of the box plays only work when unexpected and necessary. The coaches tried to feature and put to much on the plate yesterday, and a little too much freelancing. It was not a necessary play call in yesterday's game to call a throwback pass to Perich and a bad error by Harbaugh. You dont think the defense was keyed up with that front and that short angle to the football, tight window of success. Offense waa moving the ball well and Oline was in a good position with what they were doing that drive. I would rather see an I formation wheel route to the FB out of the backfield in that scenario if your gonna pull a trick play because defense isn't on high alert with where # 3 Perich was lined up. You have to know when to use the element of surprise. Still gotta coach them to chuck it up the field out of bounds at someone on O of the play breaks down like it did. Football is still a team game, and utilizing your teammates and building them up is as much as it is individual exploits. I think Koi will learn from this game when to take risks and let the game come to him. You can't always forces kiey plays. Cal just made more plays to win last night. Coaches didn't have one of there better nights. It happens. Can't put the cart before the horse. It's a team game, and hero ball doesn't always work. They will use next two weeks to get better and learn from this game. Need to move on and not dwell, and beat Rutgers.

Yeah on the offensive trick play....the play itself might have been fine but the timing of trying it was terrible and it felt unnecessary and really messed up the drive. Cal was clearly on high alert and blew it up.

They ran it to the short side. He should have dumped it, but they were on him so quickly.

Probably more like alchemy for this one. I think the lateness of it had an impact on Koi. We'll never know.

Oh no, really? The kids 19 or 20 years old playing a late game had nothing to do with it. He just proved to be human that’s all. Everybody has a bad game now and again this was just really bad.

I actually thought of the things Koi did on that offensive play; the sack wasn't the worst thing. Trying to throw the ball could have been much worse. I give him credit for that.

Players miss tackles and plays in every game.

The punt return foibles? That's basic football common sense not to "F@!k around and Find Out" inside the 5. Much harder to overlook those transgressions.

We've run three gadget plays (I only watched the first quarter of the St. Sabrina's School for Girls game; so may be more?) All three of them reminded me of the BS we called while playing football in the street as kids. Except as kids, we executed a lot better.

Scrap the punt/kick returns primarily due to injury concerns. His offensive plays should be capped to about 10/game. Concentrate on defense. That's where his future is professionally and where he can help this squad the most

Gadget plays require time. If they can't get a few seconds of protection somehow it won't work.

I really couldn't think of a worse time to try a play like that. I believe they did it on the short side of the field which compressed everything and didn't let Koi use his athleticism.
 


That was a very weird game by Koi. I hope he was hurt, or sick or something like that.
 



Koi had a terrible game for sure. The funny thing is a few plays before the punt turnover he had a break on a pass that was tipped at the line at the last second. Had our d lineman not gotten a hand on it chances are good it would have been a pick 6 and completely different game.

Too funny we both posted same thing at the same time.
 

Some of these posts remind me of previous GH posts about Winfield. He didn’t always play great and made some mistakes. You could also absolutely tell he was a stud. None of us really know all the factors that combined for Perich to have such a game . When he tried to field a second time inside the 5 that seemed like a mental lapse. He was out of position on D too often and maybe he was pressing too much ? The trick play was mostly on the coaches for calling that bone head mistake. I think and hope Perich will bounce back and be the major contributor he is capable of being for this team.
 

They could have set that trick play up better if they had run some more WR screens to Perich, which they should be doing regularly. I’d like to see them give him more direct snaps or hand offs. Just having him run basic wr routes doesn’t really let him do much once he catches it.
 

Listening to Fleck post game it sounds like there may be a lot of conversations about when you can and can’t take chances. Koi plays loose and on the edge of too loose. I don’t see it being an issue going forward on return.

Can’t do what you got away with in HS.

Koi will be fine but boy, I don't remember Winfield making big glaring mistakes like these.
 


Just let go of it. Game film sessions and a coach to player talk will take care of things that need to be taken care of between Koi and the coach.

If people want something to cry about, talk about: things that could have been done to put more pressure on the Cal qb all through the game. That kid was not the same qb when under pressure. but when allowed to get comfortable, he and his agent were sending out invitations to the highest bidders in the qb sweepstakes for next season. He is apt to be wearing a more high profile jersey next college football season. After the way A certain high profile qb wearing burnt orange colors has played this year one never knows. or maybe a bounce back to NIKE country could be in the cards.

That Cal qb just may fit the: “…have gun…will travel…” mold.

Well said. The punt return mistakes are the really frustrating ones because those could easily have been avoided.

None of what happened changes the fact that Koi is a special talent who will do some great things for us. Unfortunately he had a terrible game yesterday for whatever reason.

The botched trick play isn't on Koi. That one was a bad decision by the coaches at a time when we didn't need it. Cal was not fooled at all and blew the play up, not much Koi could have done there it happened so quickly.

The only one I recall is the time he got beat and recovered to intercept the ball (Fresno State).

Beat me to it. As a soph it's a lot, his mind didn't seem in the game AT ALL. Maybe overloaded with this that and everything else.

Play great defense, maybe punt returner. No more WR. If we can get out 'up an coming studs' to stop dropping passes, we won't need him to play offense.
