Koi Perich Transfer Portal

The conversation was about if college football was dying. More teams can now compete at a high level than before. Ratings for bowl games were higher than they've been in awhile.

It's a bit too much "Wild, wild west" for me but the sport is hardly dying.

The sport is racing toward a cliff. But in the meantime they're putting on quite a show.

It’ll be really interesting if the lower middle class of college football drives themselves off a cliff but the people just below that survive to move up a notch in the pecking order.

The bottom of the big 12 and ACC bankrupt themselves trying to compete and quit. Leaving room for the top of conferences 5-6-7 to rise a bit

Not a prediction.
Just interesting to observe

How much do college football transfers earn in the NIL and revenue-sharing era? - The Athletic

“To get an idea of what this year’s portal market looks like, The Athletic surveyed industry experts, including general managers, personnel staffers and agents, on the ranges of compensation that transfers receive. All subjects were granted anonymity for their candor.”

Here is the headline:

  • QB range: $1 million to $4 million, but potentially higher for the top players
    • his portal cycle, it appears prices are going up. The floor for a Power 4 starter, in most cases, is $1 million. “If you don’t spend a million, you ain’t getting ’em,” one Power 4 GM said.
  • OT range: $600,000 to $1.3 million
  • Edge rushers: $500,000 to $2 million
  • Interior DL: $500,000 to $1.5 million
  • RB range: $400,000 to $900,000
  • WR range: $500,000 to $1 million
  • TE range: $300,000 to $900,000
  • Cornerbacks: $250,000 to $1 million
  • Safeties: $250,000 to $900,000
  • Linebackers: $200,000 to $750,000
  • Interior OL: $200,000 to $700,000

“While Power 4 programs’ football roster budgets can range from $13 million up to $30 million, G5 schools mostly ranged between $1 million and $10 million in 2025.“

A lot more detail in there for each category. Interesting safeties are towards the bottom.
This is BULLSHIT! These numbers are all made up. There has never been anything on paper that backs this up. SHOW ME! ANONYMITY proves nothing.
Give me something...something, that a QB is making $1-4 million dollars. You can't tell me that there hasn't been a leak somewhere that these numbers are true.

If these numbers are anywhere near correct, and it's impossible to really know, then Perich's seven-figure compensation factored in a local celebrity premium.

Maybe, but he walks down the street and Gopher fans still recognize him and he gets the accolades he deserves as a Gopher legend.
Yes and that was 40 years ago, my friend, well before NIL.

The relevant question to my mind, is would be make the same decision as an 18/19 year old today; none is us know and he may not know either until he had an actual offer of $500K to go play at a more prestigious program.

It doesn’t matter to me personally where he’s from or not, other than a tacit acknowledgment on my end.
I want what’s best for MN Gopher Football, not Koi Perich, Darrell Thompson or Seantral Henderson.

You're talking about the money. I agree it didn't exist in the form of NIL back then like it does now. So, you're telling me tOSU would not have found a way to compensate him if he would have committed to them?

This backs up my thought that safety and LB are the least valued positions on the field. Surprised at the value placed on interior OL though.

Carnell Tate declaring the draft could open the door for Koi to OSU
What? They play different positions, and Ohio State still has roster spots even without Tate leaving, which was all but a certainty. It looks like it'll be Miami or Ohio State, anyone else would be a shock but that's what it looked like from day 1.

Could be Indiana or Oregon as well?

Thanks for this. Given what we know about the size of rev share + collectives, roster sizes, it makes sense most of the guys on a team are probably in that low six figure range at best, while the stars and talented guys in waiting will demand (and get) much higher deals. The top of the ranges above are probably the cream of the crop players/transfers, otherwise the math goes a little sideways pretty fast. Good luck policing the collectives as the fan mania induced by the success of Indiana, TT, Vandy opens wallets. Sadly the schools that try to handcuff their collectives will get buried. I wonder how the clearinghouse is doing this cycle 😬

I agree. It has to be hard when your two final college decisions are Ohio State and Minnesota. You choose Minnesota and your sophomore year you play in Columbus and get ran out of the stadium. Outside of the first 3-4 minutes we weren't even playing the same game as the Buckeyes. It has to make you wonder "What would it be like here?"

Agree 110% with your second paragraph. What happens if he transfers to Ohio State and doesn't get full-time playing time? I don't even know if this is a preposterous statement, but it might be easier for him to get to the NFL through Minnesota than Ohio State... at the very least you'll get more opportunities to showcase your skillset.
Talented players with championship mindsets typically aren't afraid of competition. If guaranteed playing time were a major factor in the decision of the most talented players, there would long ago be parity in CFB. But 5* guys still went to helmet schools where there's a 5* guy at their position in every year class before them nonetheless.

It might be due to chance alone, but if this is the case at least he will have gone out of conference. It would feel slightly less backstabby.

Texas Tech also seems to be the king of mercenary teams. If you're leaving anyway, go take that foolish man's money.

I was talking more about the superstructure. The games are still very good to great and Indiana is a great story, but what we are now seeing is basically professional football. It's no longer a college game.
Was 80's SMU playing college football? Or the entire SW conference or more recently SEC? Money and paying players has been in CFB for a long time
